The Border Event FX is not correctly displaying on Vegas 20 or 21.

David-Thornbury wrote on 8/22/2023, 10:29 AM

Hello everyone, this is a software bug that is not new and has evaded being corrected for several of the latest software releases with if starting sometime after Vegas Version 18. I do know that it is an issue on Vegas 20 and now the new 21 but haven't tested version 19 so it may exist there as well. I am going to attach a link to a YouTube Video Showing this BUG so you can more easily understand the issue, but I will try to describe it here as well. I use Vegas to create Photomontages for different occasions and I drop .jpg photos onto a timeline and pictures often come in many shapes and sizes. I have the photos above a background track showing a background image or video. Here is where the problem is, when I add a BORDER event FX to the individual photos, in all versions up to Vegas 18, the solid or beveled border would adapt to the photos dimensions and adjust as needed with edits, crops and master timeline motion keyframes. When I upgraded to Vegas 20, the border effect no longer displays correctly and appears to be locked in a 16-9 aspect ratio and makes using this software no longer an option for my photomontage edits, because there is no work around to get this to display a border correctly! Please get this fixed, it's been an issue for years now and I am finally taking a day to document and post this issue in hopes that it actually will make a difference and get resolved. Here is that demo video.

Thank you,

Dave

@David-Thornbury There is a very easy fix to that David. In the Border Event FX window, directly at the top left, simply drag Border chain link box to go in front of the Pan/Crop box, and all issues are solved.

Ahh what!! What a great solution!! All this time I was creating and event track and using the border for the whole track. Back in Vegas 5 they had a little triangle to make the border around the image and not the frame...then it was removed.

Thanks David

@David-Thornbury, that "little triangle" told it to place it BEFORE Pan/Crop - before you could just slide it before Pan/Crop.

I know that up to version 9 still had the little triangle and in version 10 and later you just drag it in front on Pan/Crop.

@Steve_Rhoden Are you sure about that? As @David-Thornbury showed, he used pan/crop tool to change aspect ratio of the picture and in Vpro18 this was not an issue to create a border around that changed aspect ratio picture. Try to do that when BorderFX is placed before pan/crop tool.

I can only let Vpro21 behave the way @David-Thornbury showed, when I disable (NVidia) GPU support in Video preferences:

A never ending bug in VPro!

@3POINT Yes, i am sure!.... Placing the BorderFX before Pan/crop chain, does not interferes in anyway with David changing aspect ratios, you can manipulate all you want and the border stays in place.... Using Vegas Pro 21 with no GPU, i tested all this out since morning.

@3POINT .... Using Vegas Pro 21 with no GPU, i tested all this out since morning.

As I said, only possible when deactivating GPU with all the negative consequences of not having GPU support for all other GPU supported FX.

Hey Steve, great suggestion but this does not resolve the issue that I am describing, please see the Part 2 video I just made showing the continuation of my issues, even after adjusting the Event Effect Chain Order. Now after making this video, I saw what @3POINT suggested about disabling (NVidia) GPU support in Video and that did allow it to snap the border to the image as desired but as he said, now I am losing all the other GPU supported FX. NOT an ideal fix, this is a bug that I hope someone at MAGIX sees soon and creates a fix for it.

HELP!!

@David-Thornbury Hi, pre cropping the images is an alternative option, free Happy Otter Scripts has an option to open each image from Vegas in a photo editor of your choice & all Takes inc the orig are kept in the right click Takes menu,

@3POINT: This has to be a Bug, relating to GPU ON/OFF. In both cases FX Border after P/C in Chain

GPU ON in Preview, Pan Crop ignored, no Cropping response:

GPU OFF in Preview Pan Crop working as expected:

Just checked with Video Event and it works as expected.

Conclusion: Stills of non-project Ratio, work correctly with GPU OFF, whereas with GPU ON doesn't work correctly. However, the Video of the Project Ratio works as expected with GPU ON or OFF. Gotta be a bug, gentlemen. It's as if the GPU disregards, and ignores what is placed on the T/L, and here, that'll be non-Project compliance - not the same Ratio.

@Grazie I cannot confirm that it works for cropped video events with GPU support on.

In my opinion, a Border FX should work in all situations and aspect ratios even with unregular shapes, an example of my other (nonprofessional) NLE:

@3POINT - In mine too. A Border is a Border, regular or irregular.

In mine opinion too, as there is not much difference between adding a border or adding a shadow. Which works rather fine in Vegas...!

I've developed a method of adding borders to pictures completely within Vegas Pro.

The Good News One can leave the GPU On.

The Bad News It takes more man-years of work than it took to build the Aswan High Dam.

A Side Benefit I understand the process waaaaaaay better than I used to...

Why dropping frames with an Intel Core i9 cpu +hw acceleration!?

Looks so simple task, that even a 10 yo. pc should play this at 30fps

#2 i7-2600, 32GB, Nvidia 1660Ti, SSD for system, M2-SSD for work, 2x4TB hdd, LG 3D monitor +3DTV +3D projectors

Same issue in VP20 and VP19. This code is kinda stale?

Reyfox wrote on 8/24/2023, 6:14 AM

Interesting thread.

I decided to see if the issue was also on my computer. But it works perfectly. I can pan around and resize the via Pan/Crop the image within the PiP and border with any issues. None.

Using PS20 and computer spec'ed in signature. I looked at what graphics cards are being used, they are either Nvidia or Intel iGPU. Me? Using AMD RX 6700XT on rather old drivers because of the zero support of Ignite Pro 5 by the dreaded, NLE destroying Artlist.
