The dreaded MP3 problem with screeching sound

Julius_ wrote on 4/17/2021, 11:16 PM

In Vegas 17...open a new project...placing a mp3 file, no problems..works as advertised.

In Vegas 18...open a new project...placing the same mp3 file....I get the screeching sound.

Any mp3 I place on timeline I get this problem..Yes I have cleared my cache....and even have the mp3plug2 folder in V18

Re-installing did nothing.

I have Windows 10

Can we get to the bottom of this? I have searched the forum and tried other various solutions...this can't continue to go on...and re-installing vegas may not work for some people (or mask the problem only to occur later on or to another user).

I can provide screen recording if needed.

Thank you

First of all, you should enter your hardware and software, and your driver versions in the signature, otherwise the question and answer game will start all over again. You are not a newcomer here.
In this case, more Info is better than less.
Take my signature as an example, or that of some others who have done this.

andyrpsmith wrote on 4/18/2021, 4:11 AM

My guess its related to the audio drivers related to your system as mp3 load fine on mine with realtek audio.

(Intel 3rd gen i5@4.1GHz, 32GB RAM, SSD, 1080Ti GPU, Windows 10) Not now used with Vegas.

13th gen i913900K - water cooled, 96GB RAM, 4TB M2 drive, 4TB games SSD, 2TB video SSD, GPU RTX 4080 Super, Windows 11 pro

walter-I: You're right...I used to have my info here, but I think with all the company changes (sony to magix, it got lost in the migration)

Remember that it works fine in V17, V16, V15, V14,..it's the same computer.

This is clearly a software bug and looking at past posts the main solution is to reset/re-install vegas.

Ohh, and I am using a licensed version of V18 (and V17 and V16 and V15:)

Today, I uninstalled, cleared cache, download the latest V18, re-installed, re-registered...opened V18 and placed an mp3 file...same issue! I can;t get around other than going back to V17.

set wrote on 4/18/2021, 6:15 PM

So many reports around this issue, and not all of us having this problem...

Anyway, let's try start analyze it from this way: can you share your log file called "fileio_x64.log" which can be found in C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Local\VEGAS Pro\18.0\fileio_x64.log ?

Also, do you have any anti-virus or security applications that probably interference the installation process?

@Julius_ What I found worked, but not guaranteed, was to modify the folders location where your project files, source files, audio files are located. Then when prompted by vp that it cannot find the files on project load, direct it to the new locations.

This is a new project...I just drop any mp3 file and I get this problem. But for fun I did drop it into V18, saved the project...closed it...renamed the mp3 file...reopened V18..pointed to the new mp3 file and problem still there.

Julius_ wrote on 4/18/2021, 7:26 PM

I made a short video as well....I did have a render project running but it was in V17. Problem occurs with or without V17 open....

I also noticed that in my Explorer window in vegas my mp3 files were not showing up at all.

I also erased the cache (shown empty) and vegas was reset (for the 5th time).

I also tried running V18 "As Administrator", same issue... ooffff!

I hope we can put this to rest...I cant use V18.

@Julius_ Not exactly what I did, I changed folder structure, not the file names.

Thanks for copy-pasting the fileio log.

As expected, that this line:

INFO 2021-04-19 06:12:48  Loading cached reader|renderer plugin 'MP3 File Format' from path 'C:\Program Files\VEGAS\VEGAS Pro 18.0\FileIO Plug-Ins\mp3plug2\mp3plug2.dll'

is not appear in the log. So, in your system, mp3 was read using mcplug2.dll - mistaken decoder.

Usually in other cases, resetting clearing cache does work - but yours haven't do. Can you check in the Program Files Vegas Pro folder, is the mp3plug2.dll appear?

Also, I notice in your screen-recorded video, that there's a notification 'AVAST Anti Virus: You Are Unprotected' - Is this message always appear when starting VP18 every time ?

The mp3plug2.dll appears in this folder:

C:\Program Files\VEGAS\VEGAS Pro 18.0\FileIO Plug-Ins\mp3plug2 (see photo as well)

I turned off Avast to rule out security issues as suggestioned by someone...but it makes no different

@set This rings a bell but I don't have time to go searching at present. From memory there's also another folder where the plug-in also resides otherwise it doesn't get loaded?

set wrote on 4/18/2021, 8:52 PM

So the dll file is existed there - but it's not used...

Now how to 'tell' VP18 to use mp3plug2 as the decoder for mp3 files rather than using mcplug2. Something I can't find in any internal settings.

Currently can't give answer, but I have tagged Heman from Vegas Team to join assist as they also try investigating this long term issue.

Add: @EricLNZ - can't remember - but I assume for file plug-in decoders, they are only placed here.

There's lots of threads on this but this one solved the problem for one user by deleting the relevant Appdata folder https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/my-mp3-turn-into-bad-noise-vegas-pro-18--123884/

Perhaps the plug-ins are read from the AppData folder? but a reset with cache clearing would normally clear it?

set wrote on 4/18/2021, 9:18 PM

So far I see, the C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\VEGAS Pro\18.0 contains only log, backup veg, settings, and file thumbnails

I assume 'reset with cache clearing' is equal to 'delete appdata folder' all the time, but if @Julius_ curious wants to try similar, you can try it.

Yes, in the recording you can see that I deleted the contents of the Appdata folder.

I also deleted the folder (C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\VEGAS Pro) completely....problem still persists.

Okay..this is weird.

I logged on as Administrator of the machine and I don't get the problem!

I then logged on as my regular user, reset, cleared cache and right-mouse click to run As Administrator and the problem is there. Rrrrrr.

Windows admin account ? or run VP18 as admin?

Both...If I logon as the Administrator (Windows) it works.....if I loggon as my user and right mouse click the vegas icon and "Run As Administrator" it doesn't work....and I need to use my windows user and not Administrator.

To be clear, my account user does has Administrator rights as shown.

Julius_ wrote on 4/19/2021, 5:46 PM

I'm trying to narrow down this problem....

I booted up in safe mode...then with the same user I started up V18 and the mp3 files work!

I restart computer and I login like I normally do, launch V18 and the problem is back!! RRRRRR!!!

Something is throwing it off..

@Julius_ Do you have, or have had, any codec packs installed?
