Trimmer Regions not saved to file (Vegas 15)

Trimmer Regions are not being saved to MP4 file from Vegas Pro 15

Here are the steps:

  1. In the trimmer window I have an MP4 video a file open
  2. I click and drag a selection
  3. Then I press "R" to set a region, which is shown with the green markers.
  4. Then I name the region and press enter to confirm the name
  5. Then I click the save markers/regions button
  6. I go to the Explorer panel
  7. I ensure that the "Regions" option is checked in the View dropdown menu
  8. In the explorer window, I click the file which I had previously marked a region in
  9. The regions area at the bottom of the explorer panel does not display any regions for the file.

I tried the "Refresh View" and it didn't help.

Just in case, I also saved the project file and closed it.

I also tried to go out of the folder in the explorer window and then back into it and selected the file again.

Still no regions are showing, so they are not actually being saved to the file.

Vegas documentation says: "You cannot save markers and regions to a read-only file or to file types that Vegas Pro cannot render. If markers and regions cannot be saved, the Save Markers/Regions button is unavailable."

But the button is available, so I am assuming the file is capable of having regions saved to it. I can't imagine that MP4 isn't supported for this feature.

That’s some great logging. I wish others would follow your clear descriptive process.

Can you see if this happens with other media too? Try rendering out that MP4 to say MXF and repeating your steps. If you get same result then you’d have Bug convergence and worthy of a Report.

Some related stuff which might help troubleshoot this...

There was a bug whereby markers and regions didn't get saved in ProRes or HEVC files in VP14. That was fixed in VP14 build 270, but wasn't listed as fixed in the release notes until VP15.

There is also a bug discussed in that same thread whereby markers and regions saved in XAVC-S files do not appear. As far as I know, that still exists in VP15 build 261.

Then there's another issue whereby Vegas ignores the "Automatically save trimmer markers and regions with media file" setting and just saves them into the file regardless. I haven't heard that's been fixed, so I should really test it again and add it to the known issues post if it does.

Markers and trimmers get saved in some formats in the file itself, and in some formats as a .sfl sidecar file. Here's a breakdown of some formats from that last thread:

I guess perhaps the "Regions" section may only displaying one of these 2 types of storage or the other? Or perhaps your bug is a side-effect of another of these bugs being fixed?

How was your media created and what format is inside the MP4 files? MediaInfo may help.

Thank you gentlemen. I will look into your suggestions and tools and get back to you with my findings so we can continue to find a solution.

I am quite new to video and editing so a lot of this is beyond me. For now I can at least tell you that the MP4 files I'm working with were shot on a Canon 7D mk II DSLR

Quick update. I rendered the MP4 into a Sony MXF (it automatically created an accompanying .sfl file)

I proceeded with the same steps as documented in my original post.

This time, the explorer panel region area DID display the region I saved to the file.

For some reason the regions are not being saved to my MP4 files that are natively from my Canon 7D mk II.

Will try to investigate and test more, but please advise if you have any thoughts.

Hopefully the Vegas team can look into this a bit and check if it is possible that this is a bug introduced when fixing another bug, or if it's possible that files without sidecars are not supported for one reason or another (either the explorer panel regions feature isn't reading the regions in the native file - that is, it's only looking at sidecar files - or maybe they are actually not saved into it at all).

Please let me know your thoughts, meanwhile I'll keep trying.

This is a known bug, but I thought it would have been solved meanwhile. I can repro same issue with MP4 files (and different compression types inside), so that bug still exists.

What do I need to do to report this officially so it can be looked at again, and fixed? Even if it's already in as a ticket, I'd like to put a report in to bring it back to the top so the dev team knows it's important. Thanks

With MOV files (ProRes) regions work fine for me in VP15.

Which version and which build of Vegas Pro do you use?

Using Latest Build (216) of VP15, however not ProRes. Its the original MOV footage of a Mavic Pro drone, I have to check but I think its MOV Container, Codec: MPEG-4 AVC/H.264

I experienced the same problem in Movie Studio 14. Then I upgraded to Movie Studio 15 - the same problem, returned it. Now, I thought Vegas Pro 15 doesn't have this problem...
