Jeff,
Vegas is used by a lot of religious organizations for any number of reasons, speed being one of them, but all NLE's are used heavily by religion. The LDS Church uses Vegas, they have a 145 million $$ budget per year just for their broadcasts. Lots of Baptist and lay Christian churches use video in the church and out of the church for elaborating points in church, and proselyting out of the church. Video and media has permeated most every walk of life. Plus, when they can leave a video calling card in someone's home vs a piece of paper or the spoken word, it's apparently very effective. (pictures speak louder than words sort of thing)
At the NRB (National Religious Broadcasters) conference, there was a lot of interest in Vegas and Vegas Movie Studio as field editors.

Jkrepner - For the same reason that anyone else gets it I'm sure - Power to price ratio, and the fact that it has low minimum requirements - and its EASY.

That meets many of the requirements of small churches or religious organizations.

I have to say I know part of what Jeff is addressing here. If you are used to the Catholic Mass, having video in Church is something very hard to wrap your head around. Though I suppose that in its day, using stained glass windows to Illustrate Bible Stories was the very height of technology.

I would be very hard pressed to do my job at church without Sound Forge, Vegas, Noise Reduction, and DVD Architect. I suppose i could find some other tools, but they would probably take so much longer that i wouldn't be able to get the work done fast enough to make it worth the effort.

There have been times i've been given a few digital photos, some scrawled notes for text overlays, and a CD track at 8:45 am (the service starts at 9am). I've been able to take these and project a nice animated presentation on the big screen by 9:05am durning the announcements. Maybe i could use PowerPoint, but i wouldn't have the nice transitions and movement, and syncing to the music would be a nightmare. Vegas makes it fast and smooth.

I record the 9:00--10:20 service in Sound Forge and then edit and master. I burn a CD in Vegas and have the finished disc in the library ready to check out before the 10:30--11:50 service is over. While the disc is burning i'm creating mp3 files in Sound Forge and uploading them. I may never record on cassette tape again!

Very often the pastor will want a short scene from a movie projected to illustrate a point. Rather than futzing with cueing VHS or DVD players, i simply capture that scene in Vegas, trim it, add nice fade in/out from black., and then use the rendered file right in our projection software. It saves an enormous amount of hassle and even untrained assistants can successfully project without errors.

All this and tons more ... at a price that a small church budget can afford!

Well, till this thread is locked, I will keep adding to the fire. LMAO

I think BB just needs to get laid. Are you going to Vegas?

oops. ;)

Wow, it's even harder to wrap my head around Sunday-morning, production booth deadline pressure.

Stay tuned for more breaking news as it happens.....Frank, back to you in the studio.

I'll tell you guys that I've done PLENTY (too many really) of projects that are NEEDED by sunday morning and they were finished at 6am through an all night project on a Video Toaster system. Then I saw the light - and Vegas saved me - so to speak ;)

Strange that something named after "sin city" saved me huh?

Maybe it's time I change this thread title again, because it seems that BB hasn't been commenting much anymore.

>>Dave, changing the subject title to what you changed to only shows you're a jackass, not the "Christian" you pretend to be.<<

BB since you seem to be the spiritual adviser in this thread by suggesting the quantity a person should pray , I have a question . Didn't Mary and Joseph travel on a jackass to give birth to the Christ child ? So wouldn't that make a jackass sacred to christians ? Because reading your post I thought maybe you were attempting to insult Dave .

Best. Thread. Ever.

Thanks to you darn "religous floks" for explaining what/why/where/how you use Vegas. I guess I'm cool with that. Ha Ha. Yeah, there isn't much video being produced in the Catholic church I attened as a child, so I had no idea that video was used during services. Vegas is the best, most stable, software for turning out quality stuff at a rapid pace, so it makes sense that you guys/gals would use it.

I thought maybe Sony had a special marketing team (no doubt lead by Spot) that was deployed to spread the word of Vegas to religious orginizations. I guess not, eh?

See, I learned something.

Where was that post!?!? - I never saw it, I'm not ignoring him, where is he?

BB - just so you know, I'm not saying anything that ain't true, but maybe I should not have been so harsh - I was expecting the thread to be locked and no longer be on here by now. Sorry for any hurt feelings, but you know you shouldn't have posted that to begin with.

Dave

(maybe I'll go ahead and change the post topic)

SCRATCH THAT, I found it.

Boomhower,, thanks for the report.
funny stuff.
may need tickets for that Mr. Angry show. kind of a Rickles thing I would think.
FrigidNDEditing wrote on 4/6/2005, 10:15 AM
IF you start it you can stop it (sort of). Just put a space in the subject line and I don't think you can click on it. That should do the trick. ( unless people REALLY want to find it by clicking on a name or going back in their browser)

HOW did all this come out of a statement to vote in a Vegas video contest being held by the VASST site?

HOW!?!?!?

Dave
John_Cline wrote on 4/6/2005, 10:45 AM
OK, up until now, I have stayed out of this thread...

FrigidNDEditing: "HOW did all this come out of a statement to vote in a Vegas video contest being held by the VASST site HOW!?!?!?"

Dave, it appears that the spiral into discord to which you refer was initiated in the second message in this thread. It was posted by the same individual that starts all this stuff.

BB: "While you and Cline constantly try to paint yourself as "professionals" its curious not once that I recall have either of you showed us an example of your work. Very odd indeed for the two biggest braggers in the forum to never actaully show their work."

BullyBoy, I do wish that you would leave me out of your hate-filled tirades, particularly when I have not been a participant in a thread.

Now, do something constructive by using the search function of this forum and show me ONE message in which I was "bragging" about anything. Anything at all, just ONE message.

Then, look up "libel" in the dictionary.* Not only do you continue to break virtually every rule in the forum's "terms and conditions" but you are breaking the law by posting some of the outrageously inaccurate statements you make about me, Spot and others. Just stop it.

By the way, from my attorney's perspective, since Sony provides the "sopbox" from which BullyBoy launches his attacks on forum members and Sony has done nothing to silence BullyBoy, Sony is condoning, if not passively encouraging, BullyBoy's behavior. In the event that any of us should decide to take legal action, Sony could be held responsible. Just a little food for thought.

Merely locking a thread and telling everyone to behave is obviously not getting the job done. In each and every instance of discord on this forum, BullyBoy is always involved, without exception. Sony needs to act swiftly and decisively to put a stop to this.

John

* LIBEL:
A) false publication, as in writing, print, signs, or pictures, that damages a person's reputation.
B) The act of presenting such material to the public.
C) A defamatory statement or representation esp. in the form of written or printed words; specifically : a false published statement that injures an individual's reputation (as in business) or otherwise exposes him or her to public contempt

Good point, John. I never thought about it that way, sort of an "accessory after the fact," huh?

No offense to your legal knowledge, or your lawyer,, but I'm pretty sure Sony has it covered in their terms and conditions which anyone on this forum agrees to. But I am not a lawyer nor am I going to pay mine to look into it, I really dont give a rats a@@
Having said that , I'm not condoning attacking , rude, offensive and just plain mean remarks being made here.
just an opinion

John, like most attys, suing Sony is a lot easier than suing BB for money. Sony is not your problem, BB is your problem. But like most political solutions, sue someone with money, not the actually cause of your "injury". BB reminds me of the remaining CNN staff, can't figure out that calling people names no longer forces people to conform to their standards, sound bites with angry voices just don't have the same impact when people can change the channel.

John Cline, you seem to a fair person, Suing Sony because of BB is not a logical action, its "CNN" and easy street logic.

BB problems with DSE and you, strike me as a "Psycho" movie scene where BB is a split personality of DSE. Where BB secretly wants DSE always in to the lime light and DSE is a sly guy who forces himself to deal with the public because he loves his art. ( Sorry DSE about the split personality humor)!

Ouch. I've been wounded.
I dunno if John's got a valid point or not; I suspect he does. I'd just as soon see Sony do as they've threatened, and kill these boards rather than let it be controlled by anger. There are lots of Vegas communities out there like the DMN, DVInfo.net, DVX100users, etc. They won't allow this sort of crap to happen, ever. When a thread about voting for a contest turns into this sort of junk......

It's not fair to the several dozen that have entered vids, either. I wonder what will happen in our next contest, aimed at the audio side of Vegas.

Yes, "Section K" in the "Terms and Conditions" covers this and basically it says that if you don't like what goes on here that "YOUR SOLE REMEDY FOR DISSATISFACTION WITH THE SITE, SITE-RELATED SERVICES AND/OR HYPERLINKED WEB SITES IS TO STOP USING THE SITE AND/OR THOSE SERVICES. CERTAIN JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW LIMITATIONS ON IMPLIED WARRANTIES. IF THESE LAWS APPLY TO YOU, SOME OR ALL OF THE ABOVE DISCLAIMERS, EXCLUSIONS OR LIMITATIONS MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU, AND YOU MIGHT HAVE ADDITIONAL RIGHTS."

I see, so I'm just supposed to quit using the site (as I did a week ago) and let BillyBob continue to flame me whenever he likes? I don't think so.

"All pages within this Site and any material made available for streaming or download are the property of Sony Pictures Digital Inc., its subsidiaries, affiliates, vendor or licensors. SPD is the exclusive owner and proprietor of the Site."

Well, Sony claims to own all the content on this web site, which includes BillyBoy's libelous statements. If they "own it" and it is illegal, then they must put forth some sort of serious effort to prevent it from happening. They really need to distance themselves from BillyBoy by banning him. After all, we "MIGHT HAVE ADDITIONAL RIGHTS."

Just to put the record straight, I did not consult an attorney about this matter specifically, I was talking to a friend, who happens to be an attorney, and the subject of BillyBoy's behavior came up. I don't plan on suing Sony for any reason, that isn't my style. However, if BillyBoy continues to flame me at every possible opportunity, I am unlikely to just sit here and take it. Continually defending myself here on the forum from this one individual takes up WAY too much of my time and perhaps I need to pay someone with more "clout" (in a legal sense) to do it for me.

Quite simply, at the very least, I want Sony to force BillyBoy to quit harassing me (and others.) Under the "Term and Conditions", Sony clearly has the power and BillyBoy has given them every reason to use it.

John

Spot as always, you miss the whole point. This forum isn't about your "contests" which are nothing but thinly veiled attempts to bait people to visit your site, when once they click on the link you claim is for the "contest" they instead see a page where you advertise your services. If you truly only wanted to mention the "contest" then a world reknowned "expert" like you shouldn't have any trouble linking direcrtly to your contest page. Need help with some simple HTML, just ask.

Now about the "religious" posters here. Odd, I find the comments from so-called "Christians" frequently the most unchristian in tone. As long as we've touched that topic, perhaps one of our own bible thumpers would care to address the following:

Jimmy Swaggart, a world class "christian" hypocrite and tv evangelist years ago was seen on television crying like a baby after he was caught with a $35 a trick prostitute. Interesting, this holy roller, went on the Larry King show on CNN to blast another now fallen tv evangelist, Jim Bakker, who Swaggart on Larry King said was "...was a cancer in the body of Christ". Before that Swaggart set up another evangelist and exposed him in some sexual misconduct with a member of his church.

Who here thinks the ever present sneer of Pat Robertson's face is a "Christian" look?

Who thinks the nut case Jerry Farwell that's scared to death of the color purple and sees homosexuals everywhere even in cartoon characters in a popular children's tv show has all his marbles?

Who wants their child to grow up to spout hate like the 100+ pounds overweight, finger pointing, fire breathing John Hagee?

Who can forget Jim Bakker and his wife with a pound of makeup on her face, the "lovely" Tammy Fay and their pious phony praying all the while they were looting millions from their flock?

Yep, the religious right sure got some characters. For a group that's suppose to be all about love and forgiveness, history shows us as a group, Christians are responsible for starting more wars and causing more death down through the centuries than any other "religious" group. How amusing.
