It still only works for GTX 580 or earlier GPUs. They've just moved the preference from internal preferences to normal preferences, which I think is the best compromise. Good idea to label it "legacy" too.
Yes, it is a serious improvement to my render time. I am very pleased Magix acted on this given the very low price I was able to purchase Vegas Pro at. This is a serious improvement for me. It seems smoother overall too. Well done Magix/Vegas Creative Team.

Does anyone know if the "Legacy" graphic cards require you to have an "older" software driver to work/render faster? Or can the latest, say Nvidia drivers, be used with, for example a GTX 580 and still get render acceleration benefit?
Installed build 201 OK. The cuda checkbox is still greyed out however with my GTX 8800 512 video card. The cuda legacy option is checked ok. I haven't ried the render though.

296.10 was always the benchmark, but OldSmoke tweaked 334.89 and got good results. I doubt the recent drivers would be as fast but perhaps you could do some comparative testing and roll back if it's slower. Maybe some of the tweaks mentioned in that thread would work on the latest drivers.

The latest drivers, Nvidia, 375.95, do they still give good render times with say gtx 580, legacy cards and the new 201 build? or is it necessary to only use the drivers u and oldsmoke mention. I have since upgraded to a non-legacy card. Perhaps someone with a legacy card and build 201 + the latest Nvidia drivers can confirm?
I just tried with 373.06, since the 375.x drivers fail and restart with Folding@Home, so I don't trust those drivers. Anyway I took a 16m28s region of a soccer video project I ahd to compare the render times with build 201 with legacy GPU turned on and set to my GTX 570 card. Utilization stayed arounf 40% on the GTX 570 and 0% on my GTX 970, so it appeared to be using the right GPU. I have 5 tracks with the video source being 1080P 24p. The other tracks add a timecode and running score info in the upper right hand corner with a 10s NewBlue title at the beginning. Levels and Channel Blend plugins applied to the video to correct color from Mercalli v4 stabilized footage.
Render As MainConcept 480p
Use this setting to create an MP4 (AVC/AAC) file for progressive internet downloads. Audio: 128 Kbps, 48,000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo, AAC Video: 24 fps, 854x480 Progressive, YUV, 1,000 Kbps Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.000
With GTX 570: 49m 6s
With no GPU: 38m 23s
Class: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 970 @ 3.20GHz (hex core)
As you can see from my practical standpoint, the legacy GPU takes longer for what I need to render. But since the GPU did have utilization, I believe the newer drivers do work with Vegas 14.

Thanks for the info. mbarton. So basically since GPU render times are longer, for that example, looks like no benefit with modern drivers and legacy GPU. It's a pity that Magix don't update the help page for this and give pointers as to what drivers to use with legacy cards. If you click on the ? mark while in "preferences/general" theres no help for "enable legacy gpu", although plenty of info. on other items. Why add a new item and fail to update help, Magix?
I am pleased to see that real work is being done to fix bugs and add features. I am grateful for such a dedicated team. However, I must stress that some of these improvements are only halfway solving the problems. No half measures, gentlemen, please. I have made a video pertaining to the whole improvement of the prores importing process. It is clear that some progress was made, but it is not enough. Without further ado:
