Vegas 17 Pro does not support iphone mov files???

geo wrote on 4/19/2020, 6:45 PM

Vegas Pro 17 will not open my iPhone 11 4k MOV file. It displays an error message saying the file I'm trying to open is an unsupported format. I do have the latest Quicktime installed and the Quicktime plugin enabled under Preferences on my Vegas Pro 17. Every other program I have installed on my PC can play the file it and open it without issue. Including Windows 10 Movie player, the old WM Player, Adobe Premiere Elements, and Sony Catalyst Browser. Isn't one of Vegas Pro's marketing claims its universal ability to support all commonly used file formats? And it can't even open an MOV file from the largest selling, most popular smart phone on the planet? Really?

I have an iphone 11 and vegas 17 opens my 4k 60p files perfectly...

Lucky you.

Lucky you.

@geo - I suspect it was meant as reassurance that one of our VegHeads can have it happen. OK, have you the latest build of QT and VP17? Check that. Then you could confirm you have the latest .NET Framework and if not install it. Yeah it’s frustrating that other sw can cope on your PC. There will be a solution.

@geo Did you enable the Quicktime plugin on the Deprecated Features tab of the prefs?

While iphone might be the best selling individual phone, it doesn't control market share against all android phones... but I digress.

Try disabling quicktime. Maybe IT cannot open the iphone file, and Vegas is trying to use it to open it. Vegas has other ways of decoding .mov files, so see if it can do it without the quicktime deprecated feature enabled.

@geo
I like to test this on my Vegas Pro 17 installations, but I don't have those type of files.
Are you able to give here a link to such a small .mov unwilling sourcefile of you that you have to place on a site like dropbox or so, that we can download it as it is?

@geo Try converting to CFR frame rate if its variable frame rate. https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/does-vegas-work-for-anyone--119668/#ca746464

As j-v suggested, best to supply a sample via say dropbox and we can test for you, no extra charge.

I was thinking the same thing but wasn't able to locate example clips from an actual iPhone 11. I did find these, however, from an iPhone XS which might be in a similar format:

4K @ 60fps

4K @ 30 fps

I was able to load and play these in Vegas 16 and 17 with no problem and I do not have QuickTime installed. Makes me wonder if indeed the QuickTime plugin is the problem. Can also play them under Win10 with Windows Media Player, VLC, and MPC-HC.

You can easily rewrap (i.e. just copy and not re-render the video stream) and convert iPhone11 HEVC footage (4K at 60 fps) to CFR (Constant Frame Rate) in an MOV container container using HappyOtterScripts. Here's demo using V15 that I posted somewhere on another thread.

This is probably a little too late, but there is also that .dll issue (I can't remember what the actual file name is), but a solution to one of the MOV issues was to disable it, but if you do, 10-bit files will no longer open. @geo were those files 10-bit? Just curious what the solution turned out to be.

I'm still trying to figure out how it is that anybody is opening MOV files without the Deprecated Features QT option not checked. Whatever that secret sauce is, I don't have it.
