Vegas 19: Docked video preview window causes lag

Lawrence-Farr wrote on 1/6/2023, 9:49 AM

So, I was getting terrible lag in the UI, simply resizing the docked video preview window and other things. It make it unusable, where the Windows busy cursor comes up for long seconds.

Curiously enough, it all stopped when I undocked the video preview window.

What could be causing that? I am up to date, just installed the latest update a few days ago.

I too am having terrible lagging in the preview window in Vegas Pro 19. Redocking the Preview window unfortunately, in my case, didn't make a difference. I have an mp4 created in OBS at 29.97 fps with wav 44.1 khz audio; nothing else. My system is:NVIDIA RTX 3070 8GB, Win 10, X64, AMD Ryzen 9 3900X, 16GB GDDR6 SDRAM. So my system should handle the previews just fine. To get a "smooth" preview, I had to throttle back the preview settings to 15 fps in Preview (Full) to prevent any dropped frames. If I leave the clip at 29.97 fps, it stills drops frames even at Draft (Quarter) going as low as 7 fps!.

Someone stated when OBS converts an MKV to MP4 could be the cause of the problem. I will need to test, and will update. BUT.... I did test the mp4/wav on:
VSDC free editor, SHOTCUT, Pinnacle 24, and Davinci Resolve - ALL four performed better, with DR the best. I really like Vegas and have developed an efficient workflow. I've been a dedicated user since v15, but I can't spend all my time tweaking settings when freeware programs work better.

I did discover something, Vegas Pro (17 and 19 used in my testing) does NOT like OBS MKV to MP4 remuxed converted files. I fortunately have vMIX and recorded a similar video/audio recording. Note: audio is recorded separately from the video recording on a Tascam DR-22WL and synced up in the editor. I mention this because Preview frame rate in Vegas went down significantly more when audio was being accessed. With the vMIX recorded video, I was able to preview the rendered files in Vegas Pro 19 using Good (Full), without issue.

With so many people using OBS, I am surprised Vegas can't handle their mp4 remuxed file type. If OBS is remuxing in some proprietary way, I could understand. But 4 other video editors, especially Davinci Resolve, handled them without issue. The separately rendered audio files had no issues when used with the vMIX video file in Vegas 19.

Create your video with fixed framerate in stead of variable.
Vegas does not like video with a variable framerate and refuses to load them if the differences are big.

@Don-Barton @Lawrence-Farr

I don't record hours of video and audio, but when I do screen recordings, I use the ProRes settings in OBS.

Bring lots of disk space when you come.

I don't have any problem editing those files in Vegas Pro.
