Vegas crashing upon attempting playback in video previewer

Mario-Lucassen wrote on 1/23/2023, 5:19 PM

After the newest update for Vegas Pro 20 (build 326), the software keeps crashing (not responding) when a video is added to the timeline and the preview window starts showing an image.

What I do notice is that before crashing the video previewer starts loading frames (I guess; the three dots after the frame number start moving)

My system is equipped with the following hardware:

CPU - Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-10900K CPU @ 3.70GHz

GPU - NVIDIA RTX 2080

48 GB RAM

M.2 SSDs

Thanks for making a new thread. Let's start with the first thing I always recommend...

Go to the help menu, and open the driver update utility. If it recommends a new driver(s), download and install it/them.

Does this help?

From there:

Try to disable GPU acceleration in the video tab of preferences, then go into the File I/O tab, and disable GPU decoding. Restart VEGAS. does the crash persist with those options disabled?

From there:

See if checking or unchecking "use legacy HEVC/AVC decoders" in file i/o does anything.

I am on the latest game ready driver. But I can try the studio version? What is the difference between the two?

fr0sty wrote on 1/23/2023, 5:29 PM

If the above doesn't help, here's what we need to help you fix it from there:

Your project settings (screenshots work great)

A mediainfo report of the media you are trying to load when it crashes. Mediainfo is a free tool you can download, and once installed, it lets you generate a report by right clicking on the file and selecting "mediainfo". Set the view in mediainfo to text or HTML, the default view doesn't show all the details we need.

It would also be helpful to know what version of windows, and which update/build you are currently running of windows.

Yes, use studio drivers, as they are tested to work with creative apps like VEGAS, and they get tested more thoroughly. Sometimes they even come with performance boosts for creative apps, too.

Game ready drivers are constantly updated to try to squeeze a few more fps out of running whatever latest game happens to be hot at the time, and because of frequent releases, bugs tend to slip through. Those bugs can cause issues with crashing in creative apps that also utilize the GPU. Studio drivers are only released quarterly, so they undergo a lot more testing before making it to the market.

So, I have installed the newest studio driver and the same problem still occurs.

I will now try to disable GPU acceleration

That doesn't work either...

fr0sty wrote on 1/23/2023, 6:02 PM

OK. I do notice one file is variable frame rate, it's recommended to record constant frame rates when you can... though I'm not thinking that is the cause here, because the other file is not variable frame rate.

Can you share one of those files on a file share network like google drive, so I can test it on my systems?

Tested and it works fine on my system.

So now we have to figure out what's different between your system and mine that could be causing this. Have you rebooted since updating, as in the whole computer?

You also mentioned that the issue fixed itself, then started malfunctioning again... I'm curious if there might be a windows issue at play here, something deeper than VEGAS, as so far we've got 2 folks who loaded this media without issue, and it also fixed itself on your system temporarily.

What did happen once is that after having it hang a long time (10min), I decided to quit the program.

The next time I started the program it prompted me to load the last autosaved version. Then, somehow, I was able to scroll through the clips flawlessly.

Imported flawlessly here, with no issues. So regarding your last post, it seems to have been an anomaly due to variable frame rate specification of these files on your system..... Follow fr0sty's suggestions.

So regarding your last post, it seems to have been an anomaly due to variable frame rate specification of these files on your system....

Since these video files also worked on your systems and it working just fine for me now. Drawing the conclusion that variable framerate is the issue is nonsensical. Furthermore, it has never happened to me before either and this occurred regardless of which video files I added to the timeline.

I do not think variable frame rate is the issue here. Rather that something was preventing the timeline/video previewer from playing. Could storage space have been the issue? I only had 12 gb left on that SSD at the time. I have since removed some files (40 gb free, before the reboot) and it started working afterwards again.

Sounds like there might have been some corruptions in cached data or saved settings. Holding down the ctrl and shift keys while starting up Vegas often fixes that... try settings-only first and if that doesn't do the trick, check the box too on next go-around. I would uninstall and reinstall as a last resort. Good idea to save your preference settings before doing these things. But the cache might have fixed itself with overwrites at this point.

I used to experience corruptions in cached thumbnails in older Vegas versions so I generally keep them turned off. And as a bonus I get quicker startups with no twinkle on long multicam projects with hundreds of little clip splits.
