Vegas Pro 14 and Radeon Vega Frontier Edition issue

Industrystandard wrote on 7/5/2017, 7:07 AM

I am having issues with Vegas Pro 14 and AMD's newly released Radeon Vega Frontier Edition graphic card. Whenever I put on the graphic card playback process, the images in the video clips displays a blue hue on all the skin tones and on some miscellaneous materials. If I go back to the CPU everything is well. Also with playback using the graphic card I'm experiencing some laggy clips. Why would these occur? I'm thinking maybe some driver concerns, but with Hitfilm I don't experience these things. Does anyone have any logical opinions they can share? I'm using a custom built pc based around an AMD Ryzen 1800, 32 gb ram and the Radeon Vega Frontier Edition.

I doubt anyone here has experience with the new Vega cards from AMD. I use a Fury X and aside from a few plugins that don't work, I have no issues with it. There where already problems reported with the RX580 and it seems the Vega cards are also having issues. VP14 still uses the same old Sony Vegas GPU acceleration code that has been developed for Sony Vegas Pro 11 and never been updated.

We can only hope VP15 will be better but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Thanks for responding! What issues does the 580 have? I am aware of how new this Vega is, but turning skin tones blue, without any effects or grading applied is so odd. I hope this is something that can be fixed soon because I purchased this card to allow smooth 4k and possibly 8k playback, processing, editing and rendering.

Let's hope it's a driver issue. If it's a Vegas issue, I would rather change the GPU as I don't see Magix will be able to fix it in reasonable time.

This one : Defocus, Starburst FX crash. Need to disable GPU to get it work.

But I rarely using these FXs. For general editing, I had no issues.

Just saw this post.

I'm having the same issues with my new Radeon Vega 56 card also. What you are describing is the same issue I'm having. The preview window displays abnormal coloring of the skin tone, turning blue. When I select the GPU acceleration to "None" .... the color returns to normal, however, the rendering time is awfully slow.

I've submitted a ticket to Magix support hoping to hear a response back from them.

See the below attached screen shot.

astar wrote on 9/16/2017, 3:17 PM

My guess would be that Vegas is not keeping up with the GCN versions, or AMD is not checking the backwards compatibility good enough. The stable cards seem to be GCN 1,2,3 , and the cards with issues seem to be the ones with GCN version 4 and 5. So hopefully a new drivers from AMD will fix this. I would make sure to be submitting errors with AMD and the card manufacturers.

You would have thought Vegas 15 would have upgraded/repaired a lot of these issues.

Industrystandard wrote on 9/16/2017, 8:54 PM

If Vegas 15 still doesn't work well with the AMD Vega Frontier Edition that is installed in my computer, I don't think I'll be updating.

JoeCos wrote on 9/17/2017, 12:39 AM

I'm with you, I will give Magix time to fix and show some hardware support and improvement on their next version, otherwise, I'm leaning towards making the switch to Davinci Resolve Studio 14.

NickHope wrote on 9/17/2017, 10:06 AM

@Industrystandard Please submit a support request at https://support2.magix.com/customer/en/vegas/form , including as much detailed information about the problem as you can. JoeCos' issue is in Movie Studio, so won't necessarily get in the devs' backlog as a Vegas Pro bug.

Also, can any AMD Vega owners confirm this still occurs in VP15? Trial is here. Please report AMD driver versions.

How is the new Vega card now with vp14? Did Magix fix the problems? I'm wondering if it's worth upgrading.

JoeCos wrote on 9/22/2017, 12:04 AM

I can only respond for Movie Studio Platinum 14. But Im assuming its the same for both VP and VMS.

I will paste the response that I got from them today.......

Bottomline is, they dont have a fix to the problem. If you are considering upgrading your GPU, and if VP is your main editing software, I suggest you hold off to the hardware upgrade.

Read below.

Dear Joe,

Thank you for the screenshot, it makes much more sense.
We have received some reports which are similar to yours. Our development team will work on it but we can't fix this issue right the way. The only suggestion I could give you is to roll back to your previous GPU, if it is possible. Sorry again.

Wow I bought the AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Edition just so I may experience a faster workflow. Now i must "Roll back" my GPU???? Smfh and a fix isn't near? Ive been putting it off but I guess it's time to learn another program, maybe Hitfilm's offerings.

trekz wrote on 9/22/2017, 6:50 AM

So basically 1080ti and vega 64 aren't truly compatible with vp 15 or 14?

SWS wrote on 9/22/2017, 7:34 AM

I hadn't seen that there was an issue with the 1080ti! That's a problem for me for sure as I wanted to use that board for my new system. I have an animation program that really like that card!!! I hope Magix gets this issue figured out.

Not yet. I asked the same question and the answer I got from support is "...it is a know issue to be resolved in future updates or future version of the software"... something to that extend.

A user in this thread reported that the "blue" issue was solved for their RX Vega 56 with driver 18.2.1.

Please report any success or failure you have on this thread, stating versions of GPU, driver, O/S and Vegas.

Hi
Can you tell me, if VEGAS Pro 15 (build 311 or 321) fixed your problem? The preview in 4k is fluid in your VEGA 56? No errors?
(this year thinking upgrade my pc)

JoeCos wrote on 3/19/2018, 9:28 AM

Hello,

I no longer use Vegas Movie Studio. However, when I was using it - No - it was not smooth and not fluid with the Vega 56 - it was choppy and a lot of stuttering, stop, pause, go, wait until the processor has caught up, and this was even on 1080p. I never tried 4k but I will assume, it's even worse. Keep in mind that this was with my old AMD FX 8350 processor, very old and could not handle a lot of simultaneous tasks. I gave up on Vegas Movie Studio because they had no hardware support for the Vega 56 back then. Since then, I've uninstalled Movie Studio 14.

I will be running some testing soon. I finally got the times to assemble my new PC with AMD 1950x and vega frontier edition. I already installed amd latest pro driver. Hope it will fixed most of the reported problems.

Vegas pro 15 is not using AMD Vega Frontier Edition for TL play back at all. However I don't see any blue skin tone like others have been experiencing with vega card. But I am using AMD certify pro FirePro driver. Magix needs to step up with support for newer gpu is a must in VP16......

Exactly! It’s pretty much nonsense now with their lack of proper support. Also Vegas needs more native plugins and a stable title generation plug. In addition 422 files do not play and no support for RED RAW. I have a massive computer build and Vegas isn’t holding up well with the more popular NLEs smfh. Still the basic editing is just better compared to the other offerings.
