Rendering is not an issue.

Multitude of clips cause the crashing but they're all screen recorded using the same software stated above.

I have turned off "GPU acceleration of video processing" under Options > Preferences > Video
As this was a recommendation in the past. But it doesn't seem to be helping much anymore.

It seems to crash a lot more frequently when ever I am dealing with video velocity under event envelopes.

As a rough idea of how consistently this is happening, I am having to ctrl-s every time I do something just to be safe. It can crash anywhere between 10-15 times in 30 minutes.
I've since created a batch file that kills the process the moment it happens because thankfully, if I am keen eyed enough, if Vegas hangs up on me I notice the video playback happens to freeze on a frame... Such as if the timeline is moving at all or I move somewhere else on the timeline, it wont show the new frame I've moved to. This gives me the opportunity to ctrl-s and then when I click the play button or pause, sure enough it freezes the whole application, white screen, windows time out error and then results in me having to force close.

Is it perhaps me over using the shift-B mechanic where it renders your selection to play it back smoothly without jitter? Am I exhausting RAM and it's causing the app to hang perhaps?

If there's anything at all that can help alleviate this, I would definitely like the relief....

@SilentlyB More information is required to enable forum members to attempt help. Check out

Meanwhile, to ensure you don't lose work, you should enable 'Live Save' here:-
'Tools/Advanced Save/' and check the 'Live Save' box. There's a little lag after each edit but your project file is always only as old as the latest edit.

@Jack S

Thank you for your response - I have enabled live save and it works very rapidly and I can already feel the relief, not having to spam ctrl-s is good. There's practically no lag from it, saves very fast. I have updated original post with expected details, will work on capturing the moment in the act with my screen recorder.

@SilentlyB Can you convert your variable frame rate clips to constant frame rate, only then adding to your project?

Theres a util, see my signature VFR2CFR that can do this, also Handbrake and wwaags HOS tools.

VP18 does handle VFR fairly well, but your clips FR variation is very wide, and if u have lots of them it may be contributing to the crashes.

@SilentlyB Hi, what is your Dynamic Ram set at? My PC has 64gb of RAM so i set it quite high thinking the Machine could handle that but it crashed all the time, so i set it to 0 like a lot of the forum comments say &the crashing has almost gone completely, I don't know half of what the others know but just thought i'd share 🙋‍♂️😉

Perhaps an indication that the VFR source clips are contributing to the problem?

My system has been hanging in exactly this manner on my latest project and, as far as I am aware, none of the video clips I imported had a variable frame rate, so I'd be interested to hear any other suggestions for these crashes. I have even rendered unfinished versions of the project at 2 different stages, to eliminate clips from all but one source, so I am now working with a single frame rate, still looking over my shoulder and saving after every manoeuvre ...is this what it takes for this 'Pro' video editing program to function properly?

@gobiron Please start your own thread for your unrelated question. This discussion is three years old and irrelevant.

When asking for peer support on these forums, kindly start here:

@gobiron Please start your own thread for your unrelated question.

In that SilentlyB was experiencing exactly the SAME repeated crashes as I am, which seemed to be connected to use of files with varying properties, I strongly disagree that this is an "unrelated question".
I understood that starting a new thread when the issue was already being discussed was frowned upon here, but I appologise if I have offended site protocol...

No, but we were experiencing exactly the same problem while "...overlaying images with a multitude of layers and videos...etc."

3POINT wrote on 12/14/2024, 2:09 AM

IMO it's not the task of a forum member to correct @gobiron the way @mark-y did. Leave this task to a forum moderator or use at least a more friendly way to put @gobiron in the right direction.

No, but we were experiencing exactly the same problem while "...overlaying images with a multitude of layers and videos...etc."

Please do start a new thread. Shadowplay footage had known issues with VEGAS so it's important to know what media you are using, your hardware and VEGAS version. You may see the same symptoms from different causes.

Thank you, 3POINT and RogerS, for restoring a bit of faith in human nature - I was beginning to think I was facing a 'Support' network of sarcasm and mockery. I have now started a new thread, hopefully with enough details for someone to point me in the right direction 👍
