Thanks mate! Yeah, I’m sure the VCS team will improve it.

Well, you make a good point. But, why not the optimism? Any product can improve, just look at VEGAS Pro itself. There’s no reason why the VCS/MAGIX couldn’t improve it.

Magix took the time to develop the denoiser Fx so I see no reason or indication why they would drop it instead of improving it. It seems to have some kind of bug or programming deficiency that limits the amount of CPU capacity it is able to take advantage of so, there should be leeway to improve performance. The same is true for stabilization- while you could go with Mercalli, the native Fx has gotten quite usable in recent years. Maybe the nascent AI capability could one day drive a better Vegas denoiser- who knows.

No I don't think there is any difference between Vegas improvement and Fx improvement- it's all just features and capabilities of the same program.

That said, I don't encourage anyone to wait around for a feature that you need today, so for me Neat Video meets that need. The market is big enough for multiple approaches.

I'm not sure if it works with a Sony AX700 but filming in low light with FHD instead of 4k decreases also noise.

I have personally noticed that. Although, I think that may be because it’s 4x less quality than 4K, thus the lesser detail hides the noise.

More resolution doesn't mean more quality/details when it's covered with noise. And denoising also flattens details.

@RogerS - So you “believe”, whilst I do to, it’s a matter of coding, sure, but NOT when it comes to the management of resources=budgets. Do you strongly believe or even “know” that Vegascreativesoftware is presently directing resources=budgets to employ more coders?

RogerS wrote on 3/28/2021, 4:20 AM

Grazie, I am struggling to follow the logic in your line of argument here.

Whatever deployment of resources that were used to program new features in VP 18 could be extended to improve them in VP 19. That includes AI and denoise, and hopefully further refinements to the color grading panel (new to VP 17, revised for VP 18.) Stabilization is one precedent of them doing exactly that.

I have never professed to have proprietary or inside strategy information for Vegas Pro. If you have see public statements to the contrary from Magix on denoise, I'd accept that.

Well, the Sony AX700 does pretty decent 4K video and the noisiness is minimal compared to what get with, say, an iPhone (I know, not the best example, but oh well). I have noticed. I used to use (and still have it) a Canon Legria HF G10 (if I’m remember the name correctly). It does pretty decent 1080-50i video (that I used to use Handbrake to convert to 1080-50p). Whilst it films decent quality, filming 1080-50p on the Sony AX700, the quality difference is noticeable. The colour balance is also a lot better. Nevertheless, I still prefer to film in 4K for family videos for maximum quality. If you go on YouTube and watch a video recording with the Sony AX700 you’ll see that the 4K quality is pretty darn good. Well, it’s pretty darn good quality from the Canon anyway.

When filming in low light with the Canon HF G10 there is a heck of a lot more noise compared to the Sony AX700. I know that’s partly because of the 1 inch sensor, compare to the Canon’s much smaller one (I can’t remember the size of it). So, I think any noise I get on the Sony is acceptable compared to the Canon.

As said I don't know if this makes sense with a Sony AX700.

My experience with low light conditions and 4k is that 4k can look like SD and that denoising doesn't bring details back. I also prefer not to turn night into day, keep ISO max at 400/800.

@RogerS - Sure, understood. So we’re still within the realms of believing.

If you have see public statements to the contrary from Magix on denoise, I'd accept that.

@RogerS - Likewise, if you do, please bring it here. In the meantime, we wait. Oh yes, we can add ProTypeTitler to your list. After waiting and waiting and waiting I’ve purchased NewBlue TitlerPro7Ultimate and BORIS Continuum to get Title Studio, both struggle within VP, sometimes I feel I’m a BETA Tester for 3rd party suppliers. Getting back to Neat Video, no, it just works and it feels to me NV have a strong, urgent working relationship with vegascreativesoftware.

well, what camera do you use? I have some video filmed from an Sony SD camera (it was one that took DVD’s but also had internal storage) and the 4K quality on the Sony AX700 looks far better quality than that. Perhaps what you mean is, when in almost really low light conditions, 4K can look close to SD quality, or at least 720p quality.

Yes, I keep my ISO around that, but sometimes up to 1000-2000 if I need to. I heard that it’s often better to film your event a little darker than you want it to preserve detail, to avoid loosing detail in bright areas, so then, in post, you can have more to play with. So, I do tend to do that. I can film in HDR but I haven’t fiddled much with that.

@MH7, I also use the AX700 to record indoor footage in 4K of my new born grandson and experienced the dreaded fizz. These are the options I have tried and what I use now.

Provide more light, I bought a Rotolight LED lamp but ran into resistance from baby's mum over the intensity and light in everyone's eyes so stopped using it.

Tried the V18 denoise FX as discussed but not viable as it brought frame rate down to 2fps on playback and took ages to render – plus it has very minimal settings control.

Looked for alternative options (NewBlue) no better than V18. Neat Video – by far the best
with very comprehensive options even includes deflicker which also works much better than
the Vegas option (which makes any movement blurred). I stumped up the money for neat video which I found at a special discount from a supplier in San Francisco. Really worth buying there is no better software for denoise available as far as I know.

In camera settings. I keep the gain down to max 18db. Also I found that different picture profiles affect indoor/lowlight noise, this my PP which you may like to try:
Black Level -8, Gamma ITU709, Black Gamma High +7, Knee manual 105%, Slope +5,
Colour Mode PRO, Saturation +5

Edit in Vegas18, use FX levels filter (in conjunction with RGB parade) to bring up brightness/contrast to your liking. Add neat video denoise by selecting the noise area
of your choice (or just use the auto selection).

I hope this helps.

No, to film in lowlight with FHD to get less noise instead of 4k with lots of noise.

My cams are listed in my signature.

Thanks @andyrpsmith! I appreciate your help. I may try your profile settings. Thanks for listing the them. Something I have found on the default settings with no profile is that the colours tend to look every so slightly dull. I sometimes forget that I can select different profiles or setup my own. I’ll definitely try your settings but also try taking the default settings of and adding some saturation to them.

I may look at Neat Video since everyone raves about it. I’ll probably try out the demo just to see if I like it first. Is it GPU accelerated or just uses the CPU?

Thanks also for the editing tips in VP 18. I appreciate it! 🙂 👍🏻

Everything you mentioned should help. Thanks once again!

(my apologies if I didn’t address everything)

@MH7 - It works out the best combination of both, percentile and then allows you to go with it or not. Get the DEMO and you can too start RAVING about it. As a company it realises that we have GPU acceleration and wants the best for our investment Bux or Quids! The point being here is that NV has decided to go the extra mile/klick and produced a classy intelligent responsive design working WITH VegasPro software- I wish other 3rd party companies were so successful, not naming names here 😉.....

Okay, well that is awesome. So, I’m guessing like 50/50? Yes, I see what you did there. Well, we’ll see if I will be RAVING about it once I’ve tried out the demo. It would be nice to have little to no video noise in my videos. How long does it take to process a video (like a 10 minute video for example, any guesses?)?

Just hinting instead. 😉😜
