Vegas Pro 19 is constantly crashing when editing - Jan 2025

Zalina wrote on 2/1/2025, 10:28 PM

In the last few days, when I open a file to edit, it immediately crashes. I'm working on a laptop Dell computer. Windows 11, Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10510U CPU @ 1.80GHz   2.30 GHz, Installed RAM 16.0 GB (15.8 GB usable), System type64-bit operating system, x64-based processor.

Help please.

Thank you,

Zalina

Do either of the projects in my signature work? If so I suspect an issue with media.

Sharing MediaInfo can help us understand that: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-to-post-mediainfo-and-vegas-pro-file-properties--104561/

Exactly what kind of file are you editing when this occurs?

I did the MediaInfo. Below is the text. I've been using files that I made from a digital camera

It looks like standard Sony media, I don't see any problems there.

Does the laptop have a separate GPU or just the Intel® UHD Graphics? I'd suggest the latest GPU driver Dell provides.

Any other clues as to when the crashes happen? Can you paste in what it says when the error reporter comes up (click show problem details)?

Zalina wrote on 2/2/2025, 8:08 AM

Thank you for your quick response. It does not have a separate GPU (I don't think) I've attached my PC settings information. I will attach "error report" when it crashes again. I am trying to use the program right now.

To me it seems that just 16GB of RAM is below the minimal specs for editing 4K footage.

RogerS wrote on 2/2/2025, 8:47 AM

Could you go to Windows device manager and then click on "display adapters"? Let us know what it says there.
Understand about the crash report- while I hope it doesn't crash that can give good info.

One other source of info is Windows Reliability history- it has data on crashes too.

If Dell Support Assistant or similar software has any updates for you, try to install them.

In general a lack of ram doesn't cause instability, it just slows things down. My first laptop had 8GB ram and current one had 16 until I upgraded both and neither crashed because of that. I used similar Sony 4K X-AVC S files. That said, if your system can take 32GB or more I recommend it for general performance reasons.

Zalina wrote on 2/2/2025, 9:22 AM

Where do I go for Windows device manager? And the same for "Windows Reliability history". I'm currently browsing my computer.

Zalina wrote on 2/2/2025, 9:27 AM

Hello here is the Device Manager I am waiting for the Reliability History. Should I contact Dell Assistant for advice too?

RogerS wrote on 2/2/2025, 9:34 AM

We might be getting somewhere. The MX250 is below the minimum specs for VEGAS with just 2GB of VRAM; it should be using the Intel UHD iGPU. If you look in VEGAS options/preferences/video and preferences/ file io, is the Intel iGPU selected in both? If not, select it.

Reliability History- just type it into the Windows Search box and look for recent red X for application or Windows failures and click on them.

Zalina wrote on 2/2/2025, 9:51 AM

Attached is the "problem report".

Zalina wrote on 2/2/2025, 10:05 AM

These are the two. It looks like the file IO did have Intel i GPU selected too. When I click on the drop down arrow the other option is

RogerS wrote on 2/2/2025, 8:29 PM

I think you may have uploaded the reliability screenshot twice?

Zalina wrote on 2/2/2025, 10:28 PM

I did by accident. I've reached out to Dell too. Hopefully, I can get this figured out.

Is VEGAS still crashing instantly when you import a file? If it used to work you could try a reset.

You might want to submit a request to VEGAS support too.

Zalina wrote on 2/3/2025, 3:41 PM

Unfortunately yes it is still crashing. I'm going to submit a request to VEGAS support.

Wolfgang S. wrote on 2/4/2025, 1:08 AM

Your machine does not fullfill the technical specifications for UHD editing in Vegas. The support will not be able to change that. It is up to you to change that.

I would disable the Nvidia GPU and use the iGPU that is a part of your CPU. Allocate at least 4GB of RAM for it to access. The Nvidia GPU (MX250) is sub optimal with only 2GB of RAM. Good for displaying your browser, but not much else.

I don't know if you can change the GPU (I have a dedicated card in a desktop) in Options>Preferences>Video tab>GPU acceleration of video processing, to Intel? Someone with an Intel processor with iGPU would have to comment.

Also, have you tried something other than the 4k files you are trying to work with?

I can with my "Intel(R) Iris(R) Xe Graphics" but I'm not aware of any way of allocating RAM for it. It just does its own thing with using available system RAM.

Zalina wrote on 2/4/2025, 10:34 AM

@Wolfgang S In the Display Adapters folder "Intel (R) UHD Graphics and NVDIA GeForce MX 250 are listed. How do I know which one is being used? My computer appears to have all the specs for HD operating system. The Intel (R) UHD Graphics on my computer does not have a number attached to it.

@Reyfox I just checked the files are mp4 4k files (3840 x2160 resolution). I don't see how these would start being problem. My computer is crashing all the time now, where it did not before.

I wonder if it has to do with the Dynamic RAM Preview Max in the "Video". It was set at 5% of 16167. I've increased it to 11%.

The GPU was and is set to Intel (R) UHD Graphics

Why? As long you do not use the RAM preview option (pre-rendering a complex timeline region into RAM for smooth previewing that region) it makes no sense to change from default 5% to a higher percentage, especially when you have only have 16GB RAM available in your system.

Zalina wrote on 2/4/2025, 4:56 PM

Just want to let you know I got my answer from Tech Support. The software is not supported by Windows 11 because Vegas Pro 19 is a "legacy" product. In other words, it's too old. The solution is to try the 30-day free trial and if I like, then I need to upgrade.

Thanks for your input.

Reyfox wrote on 2/5/2025, 8:12 AM

@Zalina I would be curious to see that reply. I have VP18 to VP22 on my Win11 Pro computer, as many others too. It's not your Win11 OS that is the issue. It must be somewhere else.

Well, consider the free trial of 22 and if the issue has been fixed since then that's your answer. I'm also skeptical of Windows 11 as the problem. There have been a lot of bug fixes and media decoding improvements since 19.

As far as the other questions you had above, your system is using Intel in preferences/ file io and I assume also in preferences video as the NVIDIA GPU isn't supported by VEGAS. If you want to temporarily disable it go to Windows "device manager" , click display adapters, right-click on the NVIDIA and disable it. Restart the computer and open VEGAS.

5% of 11% for dynamic ram preview won't make much difference (I have mine at 10%) but as you don't have much ram overall just leave it on 5%.

The iGPU can access up to half of system ram on its own.
