Vegas Pro 20 (326) Rendering bug

Kyle-Ansell wrote on 2/11/2023, 6:00 PM

Ryzen 9 5900x
RTX 3070
64gb 3200mhz
Windows 10 Pro
Latest Nvidia Studio Drivers

Project:
30 minute wedding ceremony
3 video tracks (no overlaps)
2 audio tracks (overlapped)
Footage Corrected and Graded
4k footage rending to 1440p
Hardware accelerated as I have always done with no issues

Anyone else having issues with Rendering? I keep getting a bug that doesn't freeze entirely, but the progress % stops, and shows cpu usage bouncing around between 0.0% - 0.5%.

When I first hit render it shoots up and shows me it will take 20 minutes to render, then starts counting down, only to stop at 3%.

Never had this issue before. Anyone have any idea?

Thanks in advance

I had a similar issue a few times when I was rendering and the destination drive was a spinning drive that was about to fail. Changing the destination to a SSD and all was good. That was my experience, might not be your issue.

Anyone found a fix yet???? this is still happening to me. and i just seen someone else having the same issue

Not seeing a similar issue but look at the frame it stops on and replace that media with a re-encoded one. Use Handbrake or ShutterEncoder for that.

I like that out of box thinking however, it's random. Last night's renders stopped at 49%, 62% 76% and even 98% with 46 seconds remaining (45minutes rendered). Then the fifth attempt it rendered all the way. Wasted 3hours last night trying to render, Very frustrating.

If all the media is similar just re-encode all of it or you're playing whack-a-mole.

Yeah I'm on the latest update 370.

I'm currently rendering the same film from yesterday, it got to 88% the timer kept going but the current render speed dropped to 0.95fps. The timer reached 00:00:00.00 then it kicked back in again and fps rose to 30-40fps. It went up 1% then current speed dropped back down to 0.98%. The timer reset to 5 minutes remaining. I waited for it to reach 00:00:00.00 once again then it kicked back in again and went up 1%. It's currently sitting at 90% rendered (time elapsed 58minutes 57seconds).

While I was typing the above, it reached 00:00:00.00 again and went up another 1%. Currently at 91% rendered.

I've paid a yearly subscription for vegas which has been on going for the past few years and have never run into this issue before. Might have to switch back to premiere and resolve as I never had these issues with them.

Being as you are suggesting I use another software to render footage makes me believe Vegas isn't equipt to handle business related topics. Unfortunately they keep slipping behind and will likely never be able to compete with other NLEs

RogerS wrote on 4/14/2023, 7:20 AM

I wouldn't say that. Other highly regarded NLEs (AVID, Resolve) are very particular about the type of media they work with and won't even let you import certain formats that VEGAS can. It's not so hard to crash Resolve either.

No idea what footage is being used here though or if there are other issues causing the render fail on your system as not much info was given about media, render settings, etc.

If we can replicate and narrow down a problem we can let the devs know to try to get it fixed. Nobody wants to see render failures.

Just about all I shoot is Cine2 with an a6600 and haven't yet had a render fail.

I have legacy AVC decoding off and decoding is set to my Intel iGPU in preferences/ file io. You don't have one so maybe try turning it off for testing purposes as in the past I ran into stability issues with NVIDIA decoding.

I keep dynamic ram preview on the default value for rendering- I wouldn't put it any higher than that.

Is this render mode NVENC or Mainconcept. Have you tried both?

Have you tried rendering to a lossless (or near lossless) intermediate like ProRes, MagicYUV, etc.?

Okay, so its not just me. After 3 days of trying to render a video my project keeps stopping at the SAME EXACT PLACE each time at 21%. I have tried all the other Youtube suggestions of "importing as media" but that is not flawless like regular rendering. When I play THAT back, I see places where the sync is off and other things are wrong. Plus I shouldn't have to do that. It shouldn't freeze.

I tried taking the clip out that it freezes at each time but it still froze at 21%. There isn't much more I've tried cause I just feel like I'm going to waste precious time trying to fix it. And if it doesn't work as it should, I can't get my time back.

Also, I'm not above a workaround but I am very pro-"things need to work as they should." I have been using Vegas for - sheesh...since the mid 2000s. And the bugs keep happening and I keep doing "the work around." IT SHOULD WORK AS INTENDED.

How'd you get that file Info to share?

I've not tried anything to do with Apple ProRes as I don't know anything about it. Ive only ever stuck with H264 as it supports my files best. When get 10bit, i will use H265.

Since day one I have always used the same settings everytime I film, edit and render. It just seems that since November 2022 Vegas has not been able to support the projects i make (which again hasn't changed).

My work around is rendering the larger films in sections, then stitching them together and rendering again.

I'm in the same mindset as bmorr, the software should work as intended and it doesn't make sense to always be looking for a work around.

I have contacted support numerous times, but so far the 2-3 day response time is nearing 5 months. I'm sure you can appreciate the frustration, especially when these jobs are time critical. My next project has already been started in Premiere, it just takes me a little longer to edit as I'm not as familiar with it. Just wish support pulled their fingers out and supported paying customers instead of relying on forums to do their jobs

"How'd you get that file Info to share?"

C1 from here:

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/important-information-required-to-help-you--110457/

"I've not tried anything to do with Apple ProRes as I don't know anything about it."

You should learn about it and other intermediate file formats.

"My work around is rendering the larger films in sections, then stitching them together and rendering again."

Did that methodology work for this project? If not, then you should be willing to try something else to get your mission completed.

"I'm in the same mindset as bmorr, the software should work as intended..."

I agree, but this forum is populated by users that have little to no direct ability to influence the functionality of Vegas Pro in the short term. The short term would be the timeframe when your current project is due.

In the long term, we're all dead. So, get it done while you can with what you have.
