Vegas Pro 20 Performing Worse the More I Upgrade My PC (???)

My current specs: GPU: Radeon RX 5700 CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 8-Core Pro Windows 10 Pro Hi there. I've been using Vegas Pro 20 for the past year but over the last few months I have been in the process of upgrading my PC.

The issue I've been having is that as I upgrade my PC, Vegas Pro has been performing worse. It first started when I got my current GPU. Despite having GPU acceleration selected, the video preview seemed to lag far more than it did with just the standard Windows graphic card. Then, just before Christmas, I got a new CPU. I had read that if there's a mismatch between the performance of your CPU and GPU that can cause issues with the video preview. I tested out the performance in Vegas just after I'd got it and, whilst it didn't make a huge difference, it was at least slightly better.

But then after trying to edit a video over the past few days I've found it to be performing even worse than before I got the new CPU and I just can't understand why. Not only is the video preview very laggy, but it slows down Vegas as a whole. I have tried various settings to improve the situation - like the Dynamic RAM Preview max - but no matter what I set it to it doesn't really make a difference. Even things that you would expect to improve the situation - like reducing the size of the preview window, or making it a lower resolution - barely make a difference.

A few more things to consider: - A few days ago my licence for Vegas expired so I had to reinstall it (I have a legit copy BTW). I'm not sure if by doing this it may have reset some settings I might've forgotten about that could help the issue. - Although my Radeon RX 5700 shows up under the GPU acceleration setting, it doesn't appear under preview device. The only working option I have for that is the Windows graphics card. TBH, I really hope this is the main issue because that would be quite simple but, even still, I have no idea why my GPU is being recognised in one place in Vegas but not the other. - The video preview lag is noticeably worse when previewing recorded footage compared to footage I've downloaded.

Again, I don't really understand why. My only theory is that because the footage I record using OBS is at 60FPS it's causing an issue in Vegas. Despite that, I always have my project properties in Vegas set to 30FPS, so I'm not sure why that would matter but I can test it. Anyway, sorry of the long post but if anyone has any idea what might be happening here then please let me know. I make videos for a living so this is quite important to me.

Then, now is the time to learn more about the overall process of video.

There are as many possible flavors of OBS settings as there are jelly beans in a five gallon jar. A few of the sensible combinations work very well in Vegas.

Included in @john_dennis' link is a reference to MediaInfo, a free utility. In order to understand your OBS source, one would need a peek under the hood.

Sounds strange to me, a licence for Vegas never expires...

For OBS try recording as fragmented mp4 AVC and remuxing to regular mp4 while limiting the keyframe interval to 1, not 0.

If you have an integrated GPU let it handle decoding in preferences, file io.
