Vegas Pro newby simple question about the program

Former user wrote on 3/12/2021, 7:54 PM

Hi, I'm a joiner, i make simple vids for Youtube with Magix Movie Edit Pro 2021, I've had it since about 2004, my videos for Youtube are very simple because they are educational not entertainment, just a simple transition between clips, but after all these yrs i've wanted just to experiment with the program but Magix Movie Edit Pro is quite basic, it's ok for my YT vids, i like it, won't stop using that & i doubt that will change, but i want more.. to play with mainly 😁

Soo.. I downloaded the Vegas Pro 18 Trial, it works very similar to the Magix Edit, that's good but it doesn't seem to have the option to put the same transition on all clips in the same track & set the time length of all those transitions without having to go to each transition to drag n set it. that's not so much a question as it is just an observation, unless someone knows how to do that πŸ˜‰πŸ˜Š

My main question is.. The preview window is a bit grumpy when showing some transitions/Fx's etc.. My Nvidia card has a Studio Driver & a Game Ready Driver, I found the Studio Driver to be a lot better but the preview window still has to be on Preview Auto to to work with transitions/Fx's etc.. I srr this on peoples YT vids where they have to alter the preview setting but Is there some other button i can click or set to improve this, & will the Full program not the Trial, version work better . I hope so as i want to inc Boris Continuum, 😊

this PC is only a couple yrs old n has enough umph i think.

My PC specs are in the Signature, Thanks Gid

will the Full program not the Trial, version work better

The trial version is the full version of Vegas Pro but with a time limitation in trial mode as well as a limitation on rendering where the trial project to be rendered must be less than 2 minutes in length. To clarify, the entire project must be less than 2 minutes in length. In trial mode, it is not possible to have a longer project and then select a less than 2 minutes section to render.

Vegas Pro can certainly do that. If you're adding many images/clips to the timeline at once, you can specify an overlap amount in the preferences. The size of the overlap determines the length of the transition.

If you select all of the events on a video track and then drag a transition to one of the overlaps, they'll all get the same transition.

Also, with Vegas Pro you have scripting. Script, such as Excalibur, will let you change the overlap size of multiple events at once. It will also let you specify one (or more) transitions to add to a set of events.

@DexconΒ Thanks good to know it is the full version, i would expect that, there's no point 'trialling' an inferior version, n thanks yep i know of the 2min limit πŸ‘

@jetdvΒ Yep i have the preference-Automatically overlap on media when added turned on, that works no prob πŸ‘ but once i'm into it & have moved/edited/cut a few clips on he same timeline track i then want to give them all the same transition n duration, I'll have a look at Excalibur as you mention, Scripts is new to me, something to learn i guess & as i said in my orig comment this transition thing isn't so important, i'll be using Vegas for my own entertainment not for making my YT vids, Ya never know tho, once i get a feel for Vegas, adjust the way i work I might find it my go-to program , Thanks

@NickHopeΒ Thanks, I've bookmarked that link, Sorry i haven't read it all yet but I'll go through that & try decipher it πŸ₯΄πŸ˜πŸ‘

@DexconΒ @jetdvΒ @NickHope I don't know if this is in the link you posted NickHope but I have found a massive improvement to the Preview performance though, It will play transitions well in Good - Full, & it will play nearly as well in Best - Auto, sometimes it just needs to do it once but it works well after that, Adjust Size & Quality For Optimal Playback on the preview screen is turned off. I found a video on Youtube suggesting altering the GPU settings in Preferences,

These are the settings he mentioned

Dynamic RAM to 2200, his Max available was similar to mine so i presume he has 32GB of RAM on his PC too,

GPU acceleration to Off

I don't know yet if this will be detrimental to other parts of the program,

This the Youtube video i watched

Ok, it works for you (improving preview performance), so you should stay with that.

But I would recommend that you reduce DRAM to Zero or at least 200MB and threads=number of cores (or 2x cores) before rendering the video .

Last changed by frmax on 3/14/2021, 5:26 PM, changed a total of 1 times.

I9900K, RTX 2080, 32GB RAM, 512Mb M2, 1TB SSD, VEGAS Pro 14-20 (Post), Magix ProX, HitfilmPro
AMD 5900, RTX 3090 TI, 64GB RAM, 1 TB M2 SSD, 4 TB HD, VP 21 Post, VP22

Monitor LG 32UN880; Camera Sony FDR-AX53; Photo Canon EOS, Samsung S22 Ultra

@frmaxΒ Thanks, I've just been going through something that someone else posted on YT, he claimed to be able to reduce rendering by half by altering the settings on the rendering Template, it doesn't work tho & by the look of comments on his video it doesn't for many others πŸ˜‚

I did discover tho that by having the GPU turned off in Preferences it doubled the export time, (this was nothing to do with what the YT man said) turning it on makes the GPU/card run a lot better & smoother, a 2min clip rendered at 1.5mins instead of 3.5mins+,

Problem is On it renders faster but the preview screen is grumpy, Off it plays really well but rendering is slow, to change this setting you have to restart Vegas 😐 I'd have to have it Off while working on my project, save the project, change the setting to On, restart Vegas to be able to do a fast final render, πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈπŸ€”

I want my cake & eat it 😁 I don't know if your suggestions will help with this, I'll have a play with it πŸ‘

@Former user Be wary of YT videos unless they are by an acknowledged experienced Vegas user.

@EricLNZΒ Yeah some of those vids are not very good, easy to make a mess of things taking advice from amateurs however long they've been using computers.

@jetdvΒ @frmax @NickHopeΒ @Dexcon Hi Just thought I'd share, i Got a major update from Vegas today & in the render template window my goto render template Internet HD 1080p 29.97 fps (NVENC) was missing along with all (NVENC) templates, Mainconsept AVC was the only one in Encoder mode πŸ™„ so i looked & looked, nothing worked to get them back, so i renewed the Nvidia driver & they came back, but.. the Preview screen now plays Best Auto perfectly, no lag on any transitions even the 3D ones &!! render times are as fast as i've had. no need any more to have to turn off GPU to get a good render times or to turn it off to get good preview πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ˜πŸ˜

Everything is pretty much set at Default, Nvidia & Vegas, I recon Vegas have done something

@jetdvΒ I got your msg about registration, πŸ‘ i'll be looking into that soon, just spent a lot of cash & a lot to go through (learn πŸ˜„) but i will be getting in contact, Thanks.
