I just rendered a quick 10 sec clip and by using MagixYUV the file size was 18megs, for Lagarith it was 11megs..I see no difference in quality...I love lagairth because of this, but Vegas crashes when I use it.

Interesting... What were your MagicYUV settings? i.e.:

And Lagarith settings if there are any? (I don't have it installed)

I re-did the test with a 11 sec file...

MagixYUL was 451 megs

Lagarith was 334 megs

(I think in my last post I may have had a typo).

It's a big difference since the file is only 11 seconds long...Here are the settings:

Thank you

Also, when I downloaded the Magix, I didnt see a RGB like you have...but it was the free release and not the ultimate...maybe I have to download the Ultimate version??

Don't confuse MagicYUV with Magix.

As far as I remember, the earlier versions had an RGB mode but you used to set it in the "Configure..." submenu, whereas in 2.0.0rc2 (Ulitimate) you choose a different codec earlier in the "Video format" menu.

I'm still surprised your file size is larger than Lagarith.

Maybe @MagicYUV (the MagicYUV developer) has a comment?

Yes I did get confused with MagicYUV with Magix :)

I don't get those options you did:

Is there anyway to get the same installs as you did?

I went to https://www.magicyuv.com/ and use the "Free previous release" version.and when you click on it, it asks for a donation..I think I gave a few bucks for it.

I ran another test with :58 seconds:

I guess I have the "Ultimate" version (currently $14). I was given a license for it somewhere along the line as a result of either previous donations and/or feedback to the developer. It looks like $9 would currently get you the same options as me but limited to 8-bit.

Lagarith uses a different algorithm (a few orders of magnitude slower one) and may compress better in some circumstances.

Note that if your source is from camera then it is most likely YUV 4:2:0, so there is no point compressing it as RGB (either with Lagarith or MagicYUV). In the MagicYUV 1.2 version set "Mode (conversion)" to YUV 4:2:0. In MagicYUV 2.0 it appears as a separate codec, choose that. Keep in mind that if you use Vegas for conversion, it'll most likely do an RGB conversion step, there is no way around that I believe (Vegas cannot forward YUV 4:2:0 material directly to codecs, it only presents RGB). Use "VirtualDub Filtermod" if you want direct re-compression to MagicYUV 4:2:0 without incurring an RGB conversion step.

Also tick the "Interlaced" option in the codec settings if your source material is interlaced, it provides better compression in that case.

Regarding the donation for 1.2, it might be a bit confusing, but you can simply enter $0 to the donation field and proceed to download (it displays the price as "$0+", that includes zero) :) Unfortunately that's the way the distribution platform we use works.

Thank you Ignus...re-ran the test after selecting "Mode (conversion)" to YUV 4:2:0 and now the file sizes are the same as Lagarith...yes it is coming straight from camera (canon 7d .mov)
