VP14 high DPI issues; blurry buttons

balazer wrote on 9/22/2016, 6:44 PM

Edit with solution:

Vegas Pro 14 build 211 fixes the broken titles and text interface.

And to avoid blurry buttons, simply set the display scaling to 149% or lower. There is still no solution for people with very high DPI displays that need more than 149% scaling.

------

Original issue:

Vegas Pro 14 scales buttons according to the DPI setting of the Windows display.   That's a good thing if you have a very high DPI display, because otherwise the buttons would be tiny.  But the scaling makes the button icons blurry.  See the attached image.  (you might need to download the image and view it outside your browser to see it at 100% scaling)

I use Windows 7 and my display setting is 150%. Making the buttons 50% bigger isn't really an issue either way, but I really dislike having all of those blurry buttons on my screen.  Vegas Pro 13 was much better in this respect.  Vegas 14 really needs an update with high resolution button icons, so they won't be blurry.

The Titles and Text interface is cut off when using a high DPI display.  This bug is unchanged from VP13.  This is one of the bugs that I really hoped VP14 would fix. See the attached image.

That option is ghosted.  And even if it worked, I wouldn't want to use it because then the application's text would be too small on my screen.

It works fine on my 27" Dell.

I did change that setting.  It doesn't help.  The "insert text media" dialog looks just like the one "balazer" posted above.  It is not usable.  I cannot find a workaround.  Blurry and tiny are annoying but this just does not work at all.

Vegas Pro 14.0 build 201 seems to have fixed the layout problem with the Titles & Text media generator interface when DPI scaling is set. That's really good news.

A small discovery: a custom DPI setting of 149% instead of 150% results in small buttons that are not blurry. Apparently 150% was the threshold for scaling the icons. Of course this discovery does no good for people with really high resolution displays. The buttons still look blurry at 150% or 200% or anything higher.

That IS good news about the text media! I don't use PRO so I'll anxiously await my V14 and hope it's there.

Meanwhile I've been going back and forth with the support people. They keep saying "The work around is to set Windows display scaling to 100% then disable display scaling in Windows for just the Vegas or Movie Studio app." I keep asking for more explicit instructions as I can't get anything to work. Here's what I did:

Under settings // display // change the size of text apps and other items -> I set it to 100%

On the vegas movie studio 13 icon: right click, properties, compatibility – I checked  “disable display scaling on high DPI settings”

That didn't help. Right now my only workaround is to dig out an old computer and an old version of vegas. As you can imagine, this does not make me very happy (or productive!).

If anybody knows how to do a workaround I'd be really grateful

I found this solution for high dpi monitor scaling problem.

It's in French but pretty straight forward and an online translator can help you. Start a "La Procédure"

Hope that helps

Disable "scaling for high dpi" on the exe file.

This results in the problem I had reported here. I will try the manifest solution as also described here :

Unfortunately I only get an error report from Vegas pro 14

However, this procedure works fine with some Adobe programms I'm using.

If your Text & Titles interface looks like the image I posted, then actually you are not missing anything important. It is annoying, but the interface is still usable, at least in Vegas Pro before they fixed the bug in 14.0 build 211.
