VP17 (452) recognizes PNG files with Alpha Channel automatically

Rich Parry wrote on 6/3/2020, 6:03 PM

FYI ... it appears VP17 452 now automatically recognizes PNG files with Alpha Channel. I don't think previous versions did that.

Unfortunately, VP still does not recognize "video" files with Alpha Channel automatically, you still have to go into Properties to tell VP to use the Alpha channel,

Feel free to confirm ...

Vegas Pro always recognized PNG alpha, though there is an exception dependend on the particular PNG property.

@Marco. - What PNG Property would that be? Always willing to learn.

When I make my own png's with transparency for use on web pages, they only work if the lowest background layer is totally empty. All the partially transparent or masking material has to be in an upper layer. If the layers get flattened, they lose their transparency.

There are no layers in PNG files. It's a four channel RGBA system (if it's a 32 bit/4x8 PNG).

@Grazie
I don't know yet. Needs further investigation (if I not mixed that up with 24/3x8 bit PNG which just have no alpha channel thus no transparency by default).

@Marco. What if it's a 32 bit PNG which is needed for transparency?

Marco. wrote on 6/4/2020, 3:16 AM

Transparency in PNG always needs 32/4x8 bit.

Or do you refer to the typo in my last comment which I just corrected?

Thanks, your correction resolves my confusion.
