VP17 Build stability

Reyfox wrote on 12/9/2019, 4:56 PM

I'm at the point of not using VP17 Build 353. Constant crashing that I've never experienced with VP16.

I have a simple 2 minute video on the timeline made up of 1920x1080 60P clips and 3 audio tracks for music and sound fx. One transition and that's it. I do have over 60GB in various Bins with about 1500 audio and video files, so have a lot of work ahead of me.

I can do the simplest of things like switching from Trimmer preview to Timeline preview, and then VP turns "white" and in taskmanager, VP not responding.

Computer hardware is more than sufficient to handle what I am doing now.

Any suggestions/help/direction would be greatly appreciated.

This is extremely frustrating. I purposely waited when VP17 was released (I was excited to be sure), but right now, it seems I didn't wait long enough.

I love so much the way the software edits....

Maybe something wrong or not sufficient enough with your hardware, because here on my desktop from signature it goes very smooth with pretty heavy files, look

You can look at my hardware in my sig. It's more than capable (Ryzen 7 1700X @ 3.9Ghz( 8 cores 16 threads), 16GB DDR4 3200 RAM, MSI Gaming X RX480 8GB. Looking at what VP is using, it's only using about 2.8GB of RAM, and barely using any CPU

If I only play one clip, and have only one clip in the Media, yes, it's ok. But I have several Bins with about 1500 videos and audio files.

As I posted, I can be doing the most mundane of things (no heavy fx, etc), just trimming and moving clips on the timeline, then the white screen of death appears and VP is not responding.

With VP16, no problem editing 4K files with all types of fx.

for all who complain .... do you happen to have Windows 7?

You can buy a new computer that fits Vpro17 (the j-v's hardware configuration seems to work) or just edit only simple projects with Vpro17 and keep advanced projects reserved for Vpro16 only...

I have a simple 2 minute video on the timeline made up of 1920x1080 60P clips and 3 audio tracks for music and sound fx. One transition and that's it. I do have over 60GB in various Bins with about 1500 audio and video files, so have a lot of work ahead of me.

Do not import all your media into one project, only when you just need a few clips from it. You can import only the clips you need to work with or use the explorer bin structure to import and edit your clips. This reserves more memory for Vegas to work with.

@j-v if I go to a restaurant and order something to eat, and it's not what I ordered and am told not to complain about it, but pay for it and go down the block to another restaurant to get what I want.... sorry, it isn't happening. I came here seeking help, not to be told to not "complain" about it and stay with a previous version. I spent my money on this product (a pro product, yes?) and this should not be happening. I've invest HOURS in this project on VP17 already. Saying "STAY with VP16" is ridiculous. If I could open the project with VP16, I would. If the program was a "good program" I would not be here asking for help.

@pierre-k I am running the latest updated version of Win 10 Pro. AMD graphics drivers are up to date.

@3POINT, why would I buy another computer just for VP17? My 8 core/16thread water cooled and overclocked Ryzen 7 1700X is more than enough for what I want to do. It has been with VP14, 15, and 16. I have plenty of memory for VP17 to work with. It's only using 2.8GB with this 2 minute project so far. If I wanted to edit "simple projects" with VP17, I would not have spent so much money on it and stayed with VP16. I would buy consumer editor if I wanted to do simple projects.

I bought VP17 Suite because I was quite happy with 14-16. I liked the new features that were added and with the Boris and Sapphire plugins that have Mocha, it was a "no brainer" for me. It seems that maybe I should have used my brain....

Normal people are used to do that.
If you buy a product ( with a full trial periode of 30 days) and payed for it, there is only one to blame if the product for him does not work. He could know that from the trial and when he bought it anyway, not the producer is to blame but the buyer of that miserable product (for him or her).

Try disabling that So4compound.dll search how to do that. Fixed ALL, I mean ALL my crashes and useability issues. I get why it is even on by default. Should be a special use things certain people CAN turn back on if needed.

@j-v you are right. I was a sucker to think that VP17 would be able to do a simple 2minute edit project..... it's my fault that the product does not work as it should. It's my fault that others have said the same thing. It's my fault for not taking those people seriously and waiting longer. It's my fault that I would dare think that VP17 would be as reliable as VP14-16 which I own. Yeah... it's all my fault that VP17 is not working correctly. How absurd is your comment.

Oh, and about the trial product..... how long of a video can you work with???? How much can you render out??? The only REAL way to know if a product works is by actually USING it in a REAL WORLD editing situation.

@j-v maybe there should be an area in this forum for those that have the same problems to post about their experiences and if any, possible solutions to the problems.

Where I take note with you is that you are saying I am "complaining". If you read what I wrote initially, it was a REQUEST for help. Not a complaint.

Stop being the VP fanboy, it does nothing for your credibility and makes it hard to take whatever you say seriously since you frame anything as a "complaint" if it is not praising the software.

I am guessing that English is not your native language and you are using something like Google Translate, which is not always reliable, and I "might" be taking what you are writing out of context.... if so, I apologize....

I might be lucky maybe I never had problems with that .
Also not in my 1 minute test project with heavy GOPro 7 4K HEVC footage and some texts. It plays smooth 50 p and rendered fast in VPro 17 latest build, look how it plays and during that the performance in de taskmanager:

Your preview is preview half, which could also mean that you're viewing proxies and not the original HEVC files. Also the video tracks are overlapping each other, means the lower tracks are not involved in the preview, just the top track and the Text track. As soon as your cursor switches from previewing one track to another track, there is a viewable interruption.

This is funny thing. I bet some old Vegas (5? 6?) can somehow recognize that situation, and don't compute lower tracks if they 100% covered. Now, even if I don't see lower track, it's still in Vegas mind and causes slow preview (or render). This lower track(s) need to be muted, for set free from calculations.

Indeed and it are no proxies, further I like to see your screenvideo of the same. To me it 's logical that while making a screenvideo with NVENC encoder it is very difficult to play a timeline with those sources in a 4K project at a better preview. But I'm curious to see it from you or anybody.😉

Base on my statement above. Take it or leave it, I have nothing to gain by lying about it. I don't make up lies to post here to impress you or anyone. If you have doubt about my system. Without question. It is powerful and will absolutely out performs your system for sure. Even without the support of AMD decode right now. It is still so good. With AMD Decode in the future. Its will eat thru those S1h footage and 8K 60P.

PS. Need correction. Apology to JV. I am mistaken something else. I can not do full frames rate 4K 60P Hev file at full best. Only can do in draft mode.

Thanks everyone for their suggestions.

I “think” things are stable now since not one crash and I am into using Boris BCC and Mocha now that I finished editing this short segment of my video, which will take several months to complete.

What I’ve done:

Unchecked “Close media files when not the active application” in Preferences>General tab. No longer have the spinning blue circle when switching between desktop and VP.

Changed to “FALSE” [Enable So4 Compound Reader for AVC/M2TS] in Shift-Preferences>Internal tab. Does anyone know specifically what this So4 Compound Reader actually does? Is it necessary?

Changed “Thumbnails to show in video events:” in Preferences>Video tab, to Head instead of Head, Center, Tail. There has been talk about the problems of VP17 and having a bunch of thumbnails on the timeline.

I am not sure which of these or which combinations have “stabilized” VP17 for the moment, but I am now back to editing and am, so far, quite happy. Vegas is moving along as fast as I can edit. I do like having the 3 thumbnails on the timeline and see if I use them now. If not.....

Again, thanks to all those who contributed to this (including Vegas tech support).

in short, so4compoundplug is the new decoder for more modern video codecs:

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/avc-xavc-s-issues-in-vp15-16-try-disabling-so4compoundplug-dll--108345/

in one side, it will support new camcorder video codecs or make faster reading, but on other side, seems like making an issue to other codecs.
