Why can't we open VP23 projects in VP22?

anthony-chiappette wrote on 2/13/2026, 1:48 PM

I understand maybe some features in VP23 may not be available in VP22, but as far as built in FX, presets, etc, those are available to both versions. If opening a VP23 project in VP22, it could at least allow complete transferring of all timeline assets, including text and animated text events.

I am growing increasingly frustrated with V23, and despite some saying it will be updated, to me, at this point, V23 just feels abandoned, and I'm tired of having to try to render my projects 3,4,5 or more times. The final straw was yesterday when I had to render my project 10 times before it would complete. There's no logical reason why I should have to do this. If it were a media or fx issue, the render would always fail at the same point, but it doesn't. It fails at different points. But, I had already posted a thread about this a few weeks back.

Anyway, I've decided that now I am going to use V22 exclusively because it is far more stable and I have no issues rendering. I do have very many projects created in V23, that I can never use in V22 without having to do most of the work over again. Copying text events on the timeline from 23 to 22 reverts all the text events to static events with the default settings.

There should be a way just to open the newer files in the older versions so at least the timeline events are intact, and if anything cannot be used in VP22, present a list of the items that coudn't be transferred over.

I know it will never get done, as they can't even fix what's already broken, or has been broken in version after version. This is just my wishful thinking. It's also frustrating that just opening a file in V23 automatically renders it useless in the earlier version even if it's not saved.

@anthony-chiappette Unfortunately it always have been that way, the only option is to copy/paste a VP23 timeline into a VP22 timeline, but that works also not as usual from VP23 to VP22...

Dexcon wrote on 2/13/2026, 5:15 PM

If copy/paste from VP23 to VP22 doesn't work, there is an alternative method which is to go to File/Export in VP23 and select "EDL Text File (.txt)" and save that file to a chosen folder; then in VP22 go to File/Import and select "EDL Text File (.txt)" and import the saved VP23 .txt file. This will import into VP22 the edited VP23 timeline with all the tracks but without any FX at all on video and audio events. The empty shells of title events appear though without the titles - but at least the shells are there. Volume settings on audio events (using the event volume bar) thankfully remain as custom set in VP23 but Volume Envelopes don't transfer.

Thanks, but copying the timeline events from 23 to 22 accomplishes the same thing, at least the fx are copied over, but the text events are still just blank text events.

True. Copying text from VP23 to VP22 does not copy the Text and it's attributes like it does copying in VP22 to VP21.

The only thing I get is "Sample Text", not the actual text that is written nor any of it's attributes.

The other day I mistakenly clicked on a .VEG file which I created in VP22, and it opened in VP23. I did not save it, I just closed VP23. I opened VP22 and attempted to open the file and I got the error that the file was created in a later version.

Than you DID save it with VP23. To avoid such mistakes put VP22 and VP23 to the project filenames. When you saved it just one time, you can try to retrieve to open the .veg.bak file with VP22.

I have separate Project save locations for each version of Vegas so that mistake won't happen. And while in past versions, if by accident, saving to a more current version, I was able to copy everything to the previous version and resave there. Now, especially if you have a lot of text, the copy/paste back to the previous version will work with everything but the text.

That's all the more reason to regularly backup copies of .veg files onto another drive of any kind (internal or external) or onto a cloud service (e.g. OneDrive) so that if inadvertently opening the .veg file in a later VP version corrupts that .veg file, you've always got a backup to replace the 'corrupted' .veg file. And yes, I've had that happen in the past but the .veg backup has easily fixed the problem.

Vegas automatically creates a backup .veg file, doesn't it? But you're right, I should be keeping my own backup copies.

A few years ago someone developed a tool that allowed you to modify the veg file to allow the file to be loaded by previous versions. I wonder what happened to it.

That tool Vegasversionfaker hasn't been developed further and was only usable afaicr for older vegasversions.

Vegasversionfaker didn't really do anything particularly clever. It just changed a magic number in the veg file, it didn't transform it in any way.
