Why use the Trimmer?

When I started using Vegas VMS version 6 the trimmer was not like it is today, and it was awkward to use, compared to Avid liquid so I did not use it much but when version 8 of pro came out and the trimmer was so to say more like the "standard way of trimmer use"
I used it and still use it all the time. I really appriciated it on an edit of a local mud bog truck race where there were many cuts a race every few minutes so the trimmer allowed me to preview all races and cut them to the timeline with ease. I love the trimmer.

I find it interesting that as of version 8 vegas added the so called "standard way" if trimmer use, and now it seems that the other NLE programs namly FCP X is going away from it like vegas use to be, seems again vegas had it right.

I have to admit that with FCP X and the new Avid studio I like the way it switched from souce to timeline in one window when you switch between them it makes for a little cleaner and somewhat less confusing interface.

I know for some people when vegas first implemented the ew trimmer they lost the auto preview when the trimmer was not in the front I wonder if SCS will consider making the change to one window for both.

So, in summary (at least in my understanding), the trimmer is for an "additive" workflow, whereas dumping everything on the timeline and getting rid of what you don't want is a "subtractive" workflow.

"What is "curious" is that there isn't a right click option to open directly into Trimmer."

Media Manager is one of those programs they never quite finished (like Pro Type Titler). There is "open in windows media player" but no "open in trimmer". Go figure...

I use the trimmer all of the time - much more organised than dragging straight to the TL. One thing I've wanted for years - from Vegas and previous NLEs - is the ability to play through a clip marking all of your in/outs as you go. Then drag all to the TL. Maybe one day.......:-)

Try Regions in Trimmer?
