Successful render with the above settings. No flicker. Took a while but I'll take it. Hopefully it will work consistently. Again - thanks for all the ongoing support. Fantastic community here.

Nice edit and nice music btw. 👍

Thanks for sharing.

So, you are editing the music clip where the video sources are from each band member ?

For this type of editing, I guess the source media type contributes to the trouble you are dealing with... but interesting to note you didn't have trouble when working in MSP17.

I did few times of the online choir project, and once I also read somewhere (in 'official' FB Vegas Hub group) that it is suggested to convert each source to Magix Intermediate (equal to Prores codec if you know that) for more stable condition.

Anyway the most important now is finishing your ongoing project first, then after that we'll see on how to make the VP18 more stable.

Update:

Congratulation... finally!

sounds great @set - thanks for the multiple responses. I will definitely do that in the future (convert to intermediate first). I always worry about quality issues with multiple re-renders but I guess that's a good format, and the source quality isn't always the greatest. Will let you know when I finally post this (hopefully Saturday which is the release date). (I'm also the drummer :))

And thanks for sharing that other thread - that's somewhat similar to what I"m trying to do, but I ended up just creating each video track separately and moving each one with Track Motion, where what I had hoped to do was create a large video wall which I could then pan around.

set wrote on 10/12/2020, 8:08 PM

Looking forward to watch it! 😊👍

At least now in VP18, you get more control over the video quality and you have a videoscope now that will surely able to enhance the overall picture quality: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vp18-notes-on-the-8-bit-full-level-option--122749/

Keep experimenting!

pro color correction was one thing I was hoping for, although not sure how much time I'll have to put into that given the extra challenges pulling this together. There are some sections of my video that look off though - almost slow motion, like there's ghosting. Never had that with prior videos either. I saw a video about "Resample Mode".. could that be causing the issue?

set wrote on 10/12/2020, 8:24 PM

"Resample Mode"

Normally it should just slowing down especially when you have different source frame rate and project's frame rate, because VP/MSP will make an in-between frames to 'fill' the differences.

To prevent any further you can disable it in your project setting, and make it as default.

I'm not sure if this resample setting will also affect for true 30p source* in a 29.97p project, or, due to VFR, which ends up having around say 30.1 fps / 30.001 fps / 29.94 fps / etc in the source may also affect in final.

*I'm working mostly in 25p frame rate.

I think there may be mixed, some are 29.97, some are 30.

Separate question - my rendering woes continue. I did some color grading and then on a couple clips used denoise. I tried to render about a 5 second clip and it hangs around 24%. It rendered prior to denoise. Any suggestions?

sakendrick wrote on 10/13/2020, 9:44 AM

Related to the above... I thought I would rerender a portion of one of the source videos by itself with denoise on using Intermediate HQ... it also hung. Wouldn't even start.

So questions... given I'm still having lots of issues

  • Should I try rerendering each source video I have as MAGIX Intermediate HQ (4K if it's a 4K source)
  • When I go to insert - assuming I can just move the original source and then point the "Missing file" notice to the new file... no other editing should be required
  • You mention 25P... is this too slow for fast action of band playing music like we do? I don't want to lose any quality - should I consider downgrading to 25P from 29.97?
  • Should I consider color correcting prior to rerendering?

Thanks

@JN- just reading your post regarding VFR. So sounds like I have to go through the process of converting all my VFR clips to CFR. There are about 7 or 8 of those. Sounds like your recommendation is to use FFMPEG. I've downloaded your batchfiles but I'm confused about which one to use. I guess my goal is to reduce any loss in quality while re-rendering to CFR. My files are 4K, mostly from iphones (one from Android), and I'll be adding them back to an existing project. Should I be using H264, HEVC or Prores? what will be the easiest for vegas to render? I understand NVENC is using nvidia vs. cpu for encoding. Is there a reason I use one vs. the other? Everything seems trial and error. In theory NVENC should be faster but sometimes it's not, sometimes it fails, sometimes it renders but leaves weird artifacts.. Any guidance you can provide?

I've never had so much trouble with a video editing project and the only variable that's changed here is Vegas Pro 18. I have 3 more days to complete my project and unfortunately dedicated way more time to troubleshooting than the actual creative process..

JN- wrote on 10/13/2020, 4:02 PM

@sakendrick I'm pretty sure that a lot of your woes will go away once you convert any phone VFR files to CFR. Just use the 01 ... .bat, set it to a crf of 17, or 16, I would use 16. Make sure that the -r fps value matches your original file. Default is 17 and 29.97 fps. Using nvenc will still give good quality IMHO, and much faster. If you want guaranteed same quality, no loss, then use WAAGS HOS tools.

If you want to keep the same filenames, without the CFR added at the end, use the batch files with the “a” added, i.e. 01a ... .bat, in this case the converted files will be saved to a folder named CFR.

I living in Indonesia, South East Asia, so my common broadcast standard of camera frame rate is 25p, like in Europe (PAL standard) - but of course all phones now are recording 30p or even 60p / 120p following NTSC standard besides of 25p / 50p / 100p. You should stick with 29.97p.

@JN- I'm reading the readme file but confused... I got an error, can't find ffmpeg.exe on the path. I put ffmpeg at c [slash] ffmpeg [slash] bin.. and updated the batch file. Where do I put it and if I have to move it do I just move the exe, or do move the bin folder?

JN- wrote on 10/13/2020, 5:39 PM

@sakendrick

Ideally, add the BIN folder to the Windows PATH, ffmpeg will be available anywhere on your PC thereafter.

These are the instructions, at the top of the readme file, to get you started. There are more step by step instructions on the inet. to add items to the PATH. Best of luck, keep drumming!

"You need to download and install say a static version of ffmpeg and add it to the windows PATH.
Example ... https://www.gyan.dev/ffmpeg/builds/"

"Adding the ffmpeg "BIN" folder to the "PATH" ...

Search for "env" in Windows "search" ...
or Select "Settings" "System", then Search ...

Select "Edit the System enviornment variables" ... Not "Edit enviornment variables for your account"
With the "advanced" tab selected click the "Enviornment Variables button at the bottom right ..."

@sakendrick It can take a while if its a long duration clip at 4K using CPU encoding, I’m assuming you are referring to the VFR2CFR program?

yes... ffmpeg seems stuck in the cmd window. normally the frame counts up, but it's been at the same frame for now 10+ minutes. The command line in the Nvidia batch looks a little different. Can you recommend which parameters to use wiht that one and I'll try it. thanks

trying nvidia.. assuming I change the 18 to a 16 and the right fps... it's running. have another job running on another pc

JN- wrote on 10/13/2020, 6:51 PM

@sakendrick Just use the nvenc as is, from memory its set to a quality setting of 18 and 29.97 fps.

Ok, you posted while I was typing🤪. 16 using Nvenc might give you a much bigger file, but its a lot faster to render than cpu.

it worked! and fast. And quality looks good... I'm on a path. Hope this does help with my render issues. thanks! Will post back if any issues.

JN- wrote on 10/13/2020, 7:21 PM

@sakendrick FWIW, I left the Nvenc (no. 03 and 03a) at a -QP setting of 18 because I found that going to 17, 16 didn't improve the quality. Obviously higher numbers did reduce the quality. On my laptop, using a 20 second test clip, 1920 x 1080, 29.97 VFR converting to CFR took ~ 57s using CPU and ~ 4s using the Nvenc.

"Hope this does help with my render issues" Fingers crossed!

do you think vegas will choke on the large files? I've got them all converted already - will give it a try. They are quite big

sakendrick wrote on 10/13/2020, 8:01 PM

ugh... I'm sure this is solvable... I converted all, renamed based on the same name as the original (added -org to original file)... when loading project it said it couldn't find these files, so I pointed it to them even though they were in the same place, then gave this error. Something must have happened in the conversion. Recommendations?

sakendrick wrote on 10/13/2020, 8:07 PM

BTW - was able to open file by disabling the legacy avc and hevc, but in the past this has caused issues with render. I will try it but another problem. one file was recorded in portrait mode... it plays fine when I view it but it came int the project rotated. Any way to fix that so I don't have to edit each clip?
