AMD vs NVIDIA !! Which one is best for VEGAS?

iEmby wrote on 7/10/2024, 5:14 AM

AMD vs NVIDIA.

i am thinking from last few months to change my graphic card from AMD to NVIDIA.

just because i see very less errors for NVIDIA users.

as i face lots of errors & bugs just due to AMD graphics. as i have to keep install old version.

also NVIDIA is a bigger company than AMD.

what are your point of views on this topic?

may be you can help me to choose. from AMD vs NVIDIA

GPU support in VEGAS is in development (lots of changes since last year) so I would wait before buying new hardware.

Personally I went with NVIDIA due to past experiences with AMD drivers. I don't think NVIDIA is good value for money, though. I'm also hoping the next generation of Intel Arc will be more powerful- it's already great for decoding and encoding video.

Reyfox wrote on 7/10/2024, 6:26 AM

Yeah, your GPU is a little on the weak side of things along with being introduced in 2017. It works, but I think that AMD mentioned they were winding down support for the Polaris architect.

I had a RX480 8GB that worked without zero issues with Vegas or anything else that I use. A friend wanted me to test a RX6600 that he was interested in buying, but it was a used GPU. I took out my RX480, put in the RX6600 and there was a 3x improvement in performance. I rendered out a few files and confirmed it. Now, they were basic edit files. So I bought the RX 6700XT 12GB of RAM. And yes, I've used up almost all of it using plugins in Vegas.

People have mentioned driver issues with AMD. The same can be said about Nvidia. Just read through the forum. Those driver issues, whether Intel, AMD, or Nvidia can usually be solved with changing your driver to something else.

All of this to say, see what your other software also support. Unless you can afford the uber expensive Nvidia 4090 with the melting of the power connectors.

There are the benchmarking tests that @RogerS has posted. Look there.

Nvidia GPUs seems to deliver less issues with Vegas, compared to AMD GPUs. So I also have the same impression.

If it is worth the money - what is it to you worth to have less issues? This assessment can be done by you only.

There are two benchmarks in my signature where you can get an idea of how different GPUs perform on similar CPUs (at least for these projects).

The product lines are pretty easy to figure out- the better cards cost more.

Howard-Vigorita wrote on 7/10/2024, 2:22 PM

In the past I've always gotten best Vegas performance from Amd gpus coupled with Intel igpus or a 2nd gpu like an Intel Arc. I still get better performance from Amd gpus with vp21 build 300+ but overall performance is much lower because it now defaults and seems optimized to making video gpu match i/o gpu. I do see higher Vegas performance from Nvidia with vp21 b300+ for very small projects but performance plummets rapidly below that of Amd gpus as the clip count and size increase. Based on an Amd6900xt and and Nvidia4090 in a 11900k machine. But as @RogerS mentions, the latest vp21 build may still be a work in progress so that might change.

Regarding benchmarks... they don't seem to be real-world predictors of performance for me lately. So I'm using one of my own typical projects to make my final decisions on which of the newest Vegas releases to start new projects with. For now it's vp21 b208 unless the project includes hd422 mxf footage from a Canon xf305. In that case, vp21 b108 works best for me. Most of my projects are multicam shooting with two 4k hevc 4:2:0 plus a couple hd including avc ptzs which tend to run an hour or two. I still have the xf305 but I'm finalizing a build of a 3rd 4k camera to eventually replace it... that's a Canon c70 which will also be shooting 4k hevc 4:2:0.

My answer wouldn't be complete without mentioning that I get dramatically higher performance in Resolve from Nvidia and Intel gpus compared to Amd. Same is likely true of specific 3rd party fx and games. That used to be true of ffmpeg prior to v6 but now it's good with everything.

after some time my vegas crashed, even my system freezed, my mouse keyboard stops working.

When that happens to me it's because I've ran out of Ram, either from a Vegas memory leak or Vegas uses up all my VRAM then overflows into Ram and uses all my Ram. Vegas Builds 300,314,315 are so broken it's possibly not your problem. When I was crashing with that benchmark I reset Vegas, and it worked, but this was with a stable Vegas.

There's an old adage "Friends don't let friends buy AMD(GPU)" and it's generally true, but because people don't buy AMD GPU's you can get some really good deals on them, and at the right price an AMD GPU could be a reasonable compromise , But there will be lots of software that you can't run owning an AMD GPU, even the mainstream software Davinci Resolve will launch it's next version with AI upscaling and SD to HDR conversion that only works on Nvidia

In your price range there's only the rtx 4070, 4070 super is a good uplift in power but more expensive, I would have paid the extra if it had 16GB, but unfortunately they kept it at 12gb.

@iEmby For this project please use the recommended render settings.

For AMD that is

VCE use Preset: Default and RC Mode: VBR - peak constrained

If the render still fails that suggests there is a problem with this system or VEGAS installation as 100+ people have rendered it without issue including on your GPU.

Consider resetting VEGAS as well as doing hardware stress tests on your machine. I would do that before spending any money on hardware.

I also didn't see your result in the benchmarking form. Please turn off screen capture, close other apps, do the render with the recommended settings, record your time and then I can let you know how it compares to similar systems.

Well, I have to disagree with this. From personal experience of actually owning AMD GPU's. I would be interested in hearing what popular software will not run on an AMD GPU. As for Resolve only working with Nvidia, I guess that would nullify the AI acceleration that it already has with the proper AMD GPU's in the last full release of 18.6, which already has AI and ML for upscaling. As for going to HDR, that I don't know, but I would like a cite for this from Resolve.

Thanks..

NVIDIA CUDA is the default for machine learning and CPU-only is much slower. I use OpenAI Whisper for example and it's ~20x faster.

That said, for video editing AMD is a viable option and you get more VRAM in lower cost models.

@iEmby That is no brainer, for Vegas, NVIDEA in recent years, and probably in the years to come...

NVIDEA also shines in Resolve, and in plugins such as BorisFX...

Not to mention in the their advance in games and AI.

Although I've been getting better performance in Vegas from a 6900xt across the board compared to a 4090, I just did a test focused on AI by processing a JVC ptz hd clip from one of my older projects and using AI Upscale FX to enhance it to 4k. My experience being that this seems to be the most grueling AI processing Vegas does. The clip as captured and split by the camera is approx 4gb long (23m09s), 29.97fps, 4:2:0 avc at 24 mbps vbr in a mts container. Here's the performance on my 11900k system with Vegas 21 build 315:

6900xt render 4k Magix Avc Vce default...... as-is: 9m32s; w/AI Upscale: 27m51s
4090 render 4k Magix AVC Nvenc default... as-is: 14m01s; w/AI Upscale: 28m48s

Apparently the 6900xt does better at this mostly because of it's quicker Vce rendering engine. I would expect Amd's 7900xtx to do even better but I have not seen an aio version of that yet, so maybe not.

I'd like to hear about performiance AMD GPU 7000 series in Vegas Pro as well.
I'd consider upgrading my RX6600 if 7000 series is more comfortable to work on timeline in Vegas with my 4K footage (4K, AVC, 8bit,~150Mbps MOVs from Panasonic X1500).

I do not care about encoding speed as always encoding with CPU.

To be honest, I do not really know what is the limiting factor in my case at this moment.
Resources utilization is pretty low (based by Windows Performance Monitoring tool), however after a few seconds of playing a fragment the preview beconing choppy. Start/stop and it is smooth again... for a while.
