Been using VegasPro for 18 Years - just discovered this one.

Hell's Teeth: I've, always, ALWAYS been using Display ALL Frames on the Timeline. I've just "learnt" to see the frames in my Narrative and Cut accordingly. Yeah, maybe sluggish, maybe some whiteouts, and so on. However, I just completed a Project using BORIS Particle Illusion and masses of other stuff, and, after several cliches and hitches, I decided to use the OPTION for NONE. Difference? Night and DAY!!! - Very solid and reliable VEGASPRO17.

Maybe you should try this IF you're getting similar "issues" using ALL Frames Showing Option.

I used to have all frame showed up in DV days 😉

but since HDV days, and by default showing front, mid, last only (which version?) - I have left it 'like this'...., and so far so good 🙂

My elder brother only set front thumbnail only to resembles the 'previous editor' we had been using.

This may make a bigger difference with AVC and so4compoundplug than with other combinations of format and decoder. At one stage, thumbnails for some formats were taking 6x longer to render with so4compoundplug than with compoundplug.

Personally, for my UHD AVC, I'm still running with so4compoundplug OFF and with ALL thumbnails showing, but I'd certainly consider showing fewer thumbnails if I have to use so4compoundplug at some point.

When V17 first launched, there was a bug that would make complex projects take as long as 30 minutes to open due to the thumbnail drawing issue, but in the following update, they dramatically improved it so that I can edit with all thumbs enabled on my system without issues.
