I've tried "defocus" effect in VP14 and it just crash when gpu is on (rx480 here), integrated HD530 works fine so it has to be a bug related to AMD card, I'm gonna report this too, the more the fastest gets fixed

I actually haven't reported it because a driver roll back resolved it for me. What driver are you currently using?

I already did some rendering tests at the (current) end of that thread 😃...

Thanks a lot. Your testing shows that enabling GPU acceleration of video processing for your Titan-X actually slows down rendering. Was definitely worth testing to check you hadn't discovered a "Vegas wonder card". Seems like it's just a wonder card for these particular effects.

16.12.1 driver here, as you can see I'm up to date with drivers, VP14 is new so, at least I'm gonna let them know about this bug

It would be really nice if someone with an AMD card could confirm my findings before I submit a bug report.

I have an AMD card (r7 360) and when i use defocus (with gpu accel.) it crashes.

CogDiv wrote on 3/14/2017, 4:49 AM

Check, the Defocus FX causes a crash with my R9 290 enabled in VP13-453.

Radeon Software Version 17.3.1.

Have the same problem... R9 290x

I also found that these Starburst and Rays (not Light Rays) behave similar.

Edit:

Found this on CC from 2013. Might still be true today. Especially the "Ray" FX looks suspicions.

"DXT" FX are any that are not OFX. I have no idea what it stands for ("Direct X" perhaps?). These are the current Vegas-native DXT FX in VP14 (there are others such as some NewBlue FX):

  • Black Restore
  • Border
  • Channel Blend
  • Chroma Blur
  • Deform
  • Film Effects
  • Film Grain
  • Glint
  • Gradient Map
  • Light Rays
  • Pinch/Punch
  • Rays
  • Soft Contrast
  • Swirl
  • Threshold
  • TV Simulator
  • Wave

Defocus and Starburst are not in that list, but Rays is. So this doesn't seem to be a simple case of "DXT" transitions being incompatible with recent AMD cards/drivers. Also, both users in that thread were using Nvidia GPUs.

Have the same problem... R9 290x

What AMD driver version? What Vegas version? What Windows version?

If this FX is critical for you then you could try rolling back to driver 16.9.2, which worked for OldSmoke. The other alternative is to just tolerate very slow operation with GPU acceleration of video processing turned off in the video preferences.

Could those who suffer this bug also please confirm whether the Startburst and Rays FX also crash Vegas?

"What AMD driver version? What Vegas version? What Windows version?"

I just tested this with Vegas Pro 13-453 on Windows 7 and I do NOT have this problem.

AMD Driver Version:

I threw in a few extra fX just for good measure.

I was using this PC setup for almost 2 years and nothing bad really happened beofore. As I said I have AMD Radeon R9 290x gpu, running on Windows 10 64-bit. The problem appears on Vegas Pro 13 and also on Vegas Pro 14. When I'm trying to launch project with Defocus effect in it or trying to add that effect to the new project it crashes.

I have no idea what is the cause of this problem. I think the problem is connected with the newest version of AMD drivers. After upgrading to 17.4.4 or 17.5.2. Now I'm back at 16.9.2 and everything work but not as smooth as usual. After selecting Defocus effects collection Vegas freezes for few seconds. Also the previous projects open very long.

Of course after disabling GPU acceleration in properties everything works perfectly except low performance of preview, editing and rendering which in my case makes impossible to work.

I don't know if AMD is going to fix that but I need Vegas to work and I have to use my laptop to render or I have to start thinking about stop using Vegas after 5 years :(

VP 12 RX 460 w/4GB. Rolled back from 17.4.4 (which crashed w/defocus) to 16.9.2. No crash, but a bit slower. I can live with that. Preview set to "adjust size and quality for optimal playback". Project is a mix of AVCHD 1920x1080 and DV SD shot in squeeze mode, with 1280x720 project settings. With the minimal compositing I do, I'm sure I'd get full framerate at Best/Full if I could match the project to the media, even with the RX 460.

Win 7 64, i7 6700k (stock), 16GB RAM.

turpat wrote on 5/22/2017, 2:11 PM

Just fix it already. My Windows updated drivers back to the newest and now I can't use Vegas at all

kplo wrote on 5/22/2017, 2:45 PM

Spoke too soon. Although the FX do work, VP12 crashes more now, even without the FX applied.

NickHope wrote on 5/22/2017, 11:43 PM

There was a massive clue in this post by @mhav about what is going on here. I discovered that back in 2009 or earlier, Sony Creative Software purchased some FX from Velvetmatter that seem like they were part of the Radiance suite. If you take a look at this page, you can see 5 of them, and a dig through C:\Program Files\Sony\Vegas Pro 13.0\OFX Video Plug-Ins\Vfx1.ofx.bundle\Contents\Resources\Vfx1.xml indicates that Soft Contrast is another. So here's the list:

  • Glint
  • Rays
  • Defocus
  • Starburst
  • Fill Light
  • Soft Contrast

Basically it looks like these FX may work better with Nvidia cards (perhaps they use CUDA) and they dislike recent AMD drivers, in particular 17.X.X. I'll update this.

NickHope wrote on 5/23/2017, 12:05 AM

Also worth noting that there is no pre-17.X.X driver listed for AMD RX5X0 cards, so if you have one of those new cards, you won't be able to use GPU acceleration with the Defocus FX, and possibly the other FX in that list too.

17.5.1 / RX470 / VP14b252 / Win 10:

  • Defocus - crash! 😱
  • Starburst - crash! 😱
  • Fill Light - working 👍
  • Soft Contrast - working 👍

Any fix yet?

Adi-W wrote on 5/29/2017, 2:28 PM

Here, Starburst was working with Vegas Pro 14b211. It started to crash only with VegasPro 14b252 when GPU acceleration is ON. I suppose it would be the same with Defocus plugin. This is with Windows 7 64bit + Asus Fury-X with driver 16.X.X or 17.X.X.

Did you make a support request? That's the best way to get bugs into the developers' backlog to fix. Give them as much specific info about the problem as you can.

I think the problem is already specified in this topic...
