BUG: VEGAS Stabilize FX does not work if top track is an audio track

NickHope wrote on 3/29/2018, 9:51 AM

I did some more testing further to the discussion around here involving @matthias-krutz and @walter-i, and this post on the Movie Studio forum.

I worked out that the VEGAS Stabilize FX does not stabilize video if the top track in the timeline is an audio track. The same issue occurs for me in Vegas Pro 12, 13, 14 and 15. If anyone disagrees with that, please comment.

I reported it to MAGIX, [Ticket#2018032917009074], and added it to the pinned Known Issues post.

Using V15 and yes same issue. even if you remove the audio track the stabilizer will not work. Also if you add a new clip and remove the audio it will not work on new clip. It will work if you create a new project.

(Intel 3rd gen i5@4.1GHz, 32GB RAM, SSD, 1080Ti GPU, Windows 10) Not now used with Vegas.

Thank you, Nick, for keeping an eye out for it.

@andyrpsmith Not sure exactly what you mean by those extra cases. If there is a case where stabilize will not work even if the top track on the timeline is a video track, please give us a step-by-step walkthrough.

As I use the Vegas stabilizer a lot I tried it with an audio track as 1st track and a single 4K clip on track 2. As you found the stabilizer does not work. If you then delete the audio from track 1 the stabilizer will still not work on video in track 2. If you add a new clip to track 2 the stabilizer will not work. The audio issue on track 1 seems to have affected the working of the stabilizer in the current project. Create a new project and it will work again.

Just has another look and the issue is having an audio track as 1st track, no need to have any audio in the track. If you delete the audio track then stabilizer will work again.

OK this is what happens: If you have audio track as track 1 it will stop stabilizer working even if you have previously applied it to a video cip. If you add a new video track as track 1 (audio track pushed down to track2) the stabilizer will work again but you will need to reapply it to clips in track below.

I received a message from Support that included this:

"Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention. We will get it PEFed and looked at right away."

I previously asked what PEF means and was told: "...it is the process of escalating an issue to our dev and QA team to see if this issue is indeed a bug or a design choice."

Tested with VP16 Build 248:
The error is not restricted to the legacy stabilizer.
I can also see the bug with the new Video Stabilizer and the Bézier Masking Tool (used as Media FX). If the top track is an audio track, there is no analysis for motion tracking.

Issue still persists with legacy and current stabilizers in VP16 build 307.

This issue is fixed in VEGAS Pro 16 Update 3 (build 352) for both VEGAS Video Stabilization and legacy VEGAS Stabilize.

@NickHope
Thanks Nick, but I think I will skip VP 16.
