Can Vegas Pro 20 edit Canon's 10 bit hevc h.265 4:2:2 mp4 video file?

terry54321 wrote on 8/10/2022, 1:17 PM

I have Vegas Pro 18 and it crashes when I put a 10 bit video file from the Canon EOS R5 camera on the timeline. A friend who has Vegas Pro 19 found that it can not edit the 10 bit file from the Canon R5. Here is a 10 bit file from the Canon R5. I would appreciate it if someone can download and see if it can be edited in Vegas Pro 20. https://mega.nz/file/EQNgnTyA#O4H6mUL7b7Do-HYoDYdkk13OShRtCoMuAVX7vc287pk This file can be edited in Premiere Pro on my computer.

My computer does not have the power to work with this file efficiently, but it did load on the timeline in Version 19 after downloading an HEVC codec. So 19 is not necessarily your problem, it needs something else to work.

I tried your file on laptop from signature with Vegas 20
Full preview it stutters but that is logic for such a 4K HEVC file.
I let VP20 made a proxy and after that it played well and smooth.
I did not further edit the file because I don't know what you want to do with an edit.
Here a screenvideo from playing the proxy

@terry54321 Hi, Vegas 19 - As has been mentioned after proxy was created it ran smoothly & i could do anything with that file,

I messed with colours, brightness, cropped it, in the end i just added a random LUT & rendered no 8bit prob, I'm sure 10bit render would be fine too

10bit 4:2:2 media works fine, both AVC and HEVC, but proxies are required for smooth playback... at least for now.

No problem on vp18 either. An xf605 bt709clog3 lut seems to work...

Thanks for the response. I downloaded and installed this codec https://www.voukoder.org/forum/thread/783-downloads-instructions/ and now I can open the Canon EOS R5 10 bit h.265 4k file on the VP18 timeline and create proxies that play smoothly on the timeline. However, I have had another problem with VP18 with the 8 bit h.264 video file from my older Canon EOS R. I can play and edit this 8 bit file without the need to create a proxy in VP16 but in VP18 the file does not play and when I create a proxy in VP18 the preview pane is completely red. This problem occurs on my tower PC, 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-12900KS, 3.42 GHz CPU, 64GB RAM , 3070Ti GPU. Here is the file: https://u.pcloud.link/publink/show?code=kZr86O7ZDvDg3njitG0lLM6CK4RYtkb0bLTV Surprisingly, I have found that I can play this file on the timeline in VP18 on my laptop i7 8750H, 16GB RAM 1070gpu if the file is located on the ssd C: drive but it will not play smoothly if the file is on an external hard drive connected by USB 3.0. Premiere Pro plays and edits all these files on my tower PC without the need for proxies and without problems but I prefer the ease and simplicity of editing with VP when it works.

@terry54321 Downloading that file but it's taking ages 😒

Doesn't play in VP19 either with the invalid SO4 GPU decoder, get a black screen mostly. Doesn't play with legacy AVC, but it does play nicely with "hardware decoder to use" set to off.

Former user wrote on 8/10/2022, 9:19 PM

@terry54321 That file started to play then went black, i could then only click along the event & see the frames but then all clicks showed black, creating proxy was fast but gave a red screen, Legcy AVC & HEVC on or off made no difference.

MEP played it no prob

PS @Former user couldn't even load it with hardware decoder to use set to off. I've no on-board Intel graphics tho

MediaInfo says that clip is 471 Mb/s avc. Might be too much for some drives to keep up with.

fr0sty wrote on 8/10/2022, 10:42 PM

Yeah, 471mbps is pretty high. Might be the cause of many of these issues, slower drives, especially externals, will struggle with that. Another thing...

VP18 the preview pane is completely red.

Red preview window is indicative of GPU driver issues, so try using the driver update utility in the VEGAS help menu and download and install any drivers it recommends.

As Todd-B suggested above, I set the hardware decoder in Preferences/File/ I/O to Off and now I can play and edit the EOS R 8 bit file in VP18. So now I will be able to edit both the 8 bit and 10 bit 4k files from the Canon EOS R and R5 cameras. I can edit the 8 bit file directly but will need to create proxy files in VP18 to play smoothly and edit the 10 bit files. I did have to download and install an hevc 10 bit codec to play and edit the 10 bit file in VP18.

@Former user Doh!!!!!!! it was 3.26am when i wrote that PS in that last msg, just got up n realised i was trying to drag the file from the orig zipped folder not the unzipped one, 🤣🤦‍♂️ Yep with settings as in below pic it plays fine 👍
