Canon xf605 w/Vegas 19

Opened an xf605 this morning and was so excited to get it, I almost immediately did a 2-camera test shoot next to my Zcam E2. Gotta thank the wife for putting up with this without rehearsal or warm up.

Based on the results viewing a quick grade, I definitely need to revise some of the default settings. My interest in this camera is its integrated lens, built-in nd filters, and spectacularly performing auto-focus when doing ptz moves. And more importantly to me, its ability to record 4k 10-bit 4:2:0 hevc like my Zcam for which I've optimized my hardware for editing in Vegas. In my down and dirty test shoot, I set both cameras to 29.97 fps rec709 4k 4:2:0 mp4 capture. Put 128 gb v90 sdxc Kinston chips into the Canon and my usual 2tb m.2/cfast into the Zcam. Canon's only setting for 29.97 fps mp4 hevc is 100 mbps. I set the Zcam for 60 mbps rather than its 135 or 200 options. I did a custom white balance on the Canon... I noticed that unlike my older Canon, the xf605 docs say I can use either a white or grey card but I used the same white card specified for the xf305. Zcam was set to auto white balance with lock on record as per their recommendation. I set exposure manually on the Zcam using scopes but set the Canon to auto-iris with high gain. Looking at my test shoot I think I need to go fully manual there too. Particularly for the benefit of the wide angle zoom-out. In the graded video below, the Zcam is locked to a torso/keyboard view and the Canon does all the ptz. I liked the Canon color balance better than Zcam's which I tweaked to get a closer match (B= +.020, R= -0.10) after which I think the Zcam looks better to me. Keep in mind that the Zcam E2 has an inherent advantage with it's mft-sized sensor compared to the 1-incher in the Canon. The audio edit (recorded externally) in Vegas 19 was a breeze without proxies with only one camera showing. But was jumpy on occasion on my 6900xt/11900k doing the multicam cuts. But previewing after angle-cuts through the nested master, where I did the trimming and a slice-out of a false start, was pretty smooth except for the cross-fade I opened with.

Although it lacks many of the Zcam's features and options, the xf605 has some interesting capabilities to explore. Like being able to record proxies to it's 2nd chip. Which seems practical for most of my shoots since its showing 156 minutes recording time on the 1st 128 gb chip for 29.97 fps 4k 100 mbps hevc... and I could always throw a 256 gb chip into slot #1 if holiday festivities ever come back again. It also gives the option to set the proxy to 1080p or 720p. Having the separate files generated during the shoot could be a big time saver for edit in Vegas with media substitution. When I get a chance I'll shoot and post some sample clips from the xf605 in its other available formats like mxf which has both intra and long-gop 4:2:2 options. Not to mention the C-log option.

EDIT: After trying to learn from my mistakes 1st time round, here's my 2nd effort; gain on low this time, iris manual, and it apparently pays to read the manual... exposure set with built-in scope:

I shot this one entirely with the Canon this time and tried my best to confuse the autofocus with a bunch of moves including zooming in on a reflection and I think it did pretty well. Grade in Vegas took all of a few minutes.

Here are a bunch of 10-second sample clips (approx 2.5 GB) I shot to try out some of the recording format options... looks like Vegas can pretty much handle them all:
