Choppy playback after rendering

chaimr wrote on 7/28/2014, 6:48 AM
Clients files are taken from multiple mobile phones as mp4. i have increased the frame size to be consistent throughout. when i render the timeline and play the rendered file back its plays back choppy. audio is fine. Original files are not choppy.

Any ideas as to what causes this and how to redtify.

thanks

What quality setting is your preview set to?

Which method did you use to render your timeline?

Have you tried outputting a sample of your finished video as an MP4 to see if the choppy playback is only in the project itself and not on the finished product?

So many things can cause choppy playback of your project timeline including your system specs, your project settings, your source video, your playback quality, etc.

What is the frame rate of each of the source files?

Do all the source files have the same frame rate?

Are the source file frame rates variable?

What is the project frame rate?

What is the render frame rate?

playback - preview auto
render method - internet 480p widescreen, NTSC 2 pass, VBR 2,000,000-1,000,000. rendering using CPU only.

i have tried different variations and settings, file extension is mp4. same prob

my system is an i7 2700k, 16gb ram, quadro 2000 and fx 570, and 4TB in RAID 5 (SSD for System drive)

both, time line and final rendered versions (mp4) are choppy

What is the frame rate of each of the source files? 29.97, 29.462, 30.062 30.109 30.00 31.00 30.069 30.075 30.096 30.092 (never seen some of these frame rates b4)

Do all the source files have the same frame rate? definitely not

Are the source file frame rates variable?

What is the project frame rate? 29.97

What is the render frame rate? 29.97 - shouldn't VP13 be able to standardize the different rates?

the individual clips playback ok, when i put them on the timeline they become choppy (each individual clip that is) and the outputted file retains that choppiness.

thanks

There was an offer from johnmeyer about how to deal with variable frame rate source in this thread.

To be honest, I'm clueless at the moment.

Search this forum with the search term variable frame rate.

Hi Chainr,

Don't have an immediate answer for you, but I am interested in your comment: "increased the frame size". Could you please advise how you approached this resize. did you set the project properties then match source files?

When the various files are dragged onto teh timeline, do they play smoothly via Vegas preview window? I couldn't understand if they do play ok on preview (i.e prior to rendering.

Hope you get to the bottom of this.

i used the event pan crop button and adjusted the height and width - quality of the footage is still lousy.

the footage that was choppy during playback was choppy after rendering, but interestingly when i play the footage b4 it went into the timeline, using windows media player, it is and was fine.

i'm still stumped

Hi Chaim.

What happens if you simply start a new project on a clean timeline, set project properties, check the box in the properties dialogue that says "Adjust source material to match render" and simply drag all the various files onto your time line, then render, using a template that matches your project properties and let Vegas sort things out ? (in other words, don't resize each event individually).

@hazencruz There are many potential solutions dependent on many factors.

  • What version and build number of VEGAS Pro you are using?
  • What render template/settings did you use?
  • What are your computer specs (CPU, GPU, RAM)?
