Concerned about buying Vegas 23

Reno wrote on 11/17/2025, 7:10 PM

I have Vegas 13 which will not open the newer video types and need to upgrade or change programs. I do relatively simple videos of our travels for personal pleasure. As I do not want to tithe to a company, I want to buy rather than have a subscription. I'm very concerned as to whether Vegas 23 will work with my computers. I have a ton of questions that I would normally ask a salesperson, but they do not exist for this software.
I'd ask a salesperson the following:
How really, really bad is the support going to be because I cannot even ask the questions I need answered to decide to buy?
1) May I put it on my two computers?
2) Since I have Vegas 13 - is this an upgrade, or do I need to buy completely new - the price is quite different.
3) My desktop has the minimum system requirements, however, I love to mess with videos on my laptop - especially when traveling, but I don't know if the graphics will keep up...
Desktop system is: Windows 11, Intel core i7-10700 CPU @ 2.90GHz,64-bit operating system, x64-based processor, 16 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER Driver version 32.0.14.7683
Laptop system is: 12th gen core i7 1.70 GHz, 16 GB RAM, 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor, Intel Iris Xe driver version 31.0.101.4502
4) How buggy is it? I just spent a ton of time with DaVinci and having to constantly reboot. I then spent a ton of time with CapCut (which I really liked), but the project files are kept online and they are sneaky about how they try to get you to buy a subscription as there is basically NOTHING you can do with audio without the full software. It is a $90 tithe a year.
6) When, (not if), I'm trying to get this to work on my computer, how difficult is it going to be to figure out what is causing the problem? I have a TON of using software experience, but I do this stuff for fun and am not great at the hardware issues.

So does anyone know how to get these questions answered? Are we supposed to, as users, get all of our information from other users? I'm kind of on an island here as I don't know other people who do the kinds of things I do with computers... and I am frankly VERY tired of having to work so hard just to get software working rather than getting to work in the software.

Any suggestions?

@Reno

1) Yes

2) Likely, Yes

3) Meh!

4) Vegas Pro 23 is not mature at the moment. Some of us are waiting for a few bug fixes before upgrading from Vegas Pro 22. I also have 13 on my machine and refer to it often. I've run every version except 11 and 16. I bought, 11 but never got around to using it. I just willfully did not buy 16 and am not ashamed to admit it. I've considered being an "Angel Investor" by buying 23 and letting it simmer for a while. I also throw money at Shutter Encoder, Mediainfo and Wikipedia from time to time.

5)

6) You said: "I have a TON of using software experience". That helps. If you also use camera(s), that would help, too. This forum is a valuable resource if you do your homework and present relevant data when requested.

4. Vegaspro 23 performs (editing mainly 4k videos from DJI cameras) on my PC faster and without great issues as former Vegaspro versions ( I had all versions since version 5) my PC is in my signature. I wonder that you have issues with Davinci, Davinci Resolve 20 (free version) performs excellent on my PC.

5 You can always try VP23 (30 days) before you buy/upgrade and find out yourself if VP23 fits your needs.

Thanks John and 3point. Yeah... I taught software at a university. Used videos for online teaching starting 2001... Lots of years ago... Pretty good at still photography - not a great videographer. In a different life I'd probably flown drones rather than hot air balloons and paragliders. :) The travel vids are just for fun. My desktop is older and my laptop is what it is. I'm not a gamer and bought both before AI was available at it's present capacity. Anyway, I did try davinci ... Didn't do great on my lappy. Vegas 13 did everything I needed as I know it well, but now it won't take the newer codecs I want to use...I think, 3Point, I will try 23 out for a few days, and John, I will likely take the $99 Vegas 23 deal for back pocket anyway so that I can use it when the bugs are fixed. Maybe I can use 23 to slap a bunch of vids together for conversion to a codec vegas 13 can use.

I'll pay it forward and help others here where I can.

Much appreciated.

@Reno I use(d) Vegaspro at my former job as AV technician, for editing interviews, addresses etc. At home just for editing my travel videos. No need for AI features (which perform quite slow in Vegas on my system).

There are just minor bugs in VP23 that will not make VP23 unuseable at the moment.

At the moment I spend a lot of time, when not on travel, to get experience in using DR. It's always useful to have more than one tool in your toolbox and that you know how and when to use it.

13Year_User wrote on 11/18/2025, 12:24 AM

@Reno you can try vegas pro 23 because exist a many bugs and if this bugs affect your job can be problematic. In mi case i use a los transitions and effect and in vegas 23 exist a famouse bugs when the transition tab not update until you click in the transition name. In all older version was automatcly so if you need use effects or transitions i recommend wait fot the next patch. (Aparently before christmass will apppear a new patch where i hope fix the transition tab bugs) if you not need effects or transitions work very smooth

Looking through this thread it is not clear to me exactly what media will be used and this is extreamly important as many, many, users issues can be related to this. Having min spec hardware is likely to mean a frustrating time with Vegas. The best advice is to test out V23 via the trial and see what issues you get. V23 is an ongoing project right now. I use the Vegas friendly Sony XAVCS 4K media and this works well and V23 does use my GPU albeit slower than V22. V23 did initially crash a few times but this has not happened for some time. I do not use most of the in-depth features as I make family video.

(Intel 3rd gen i5@4.1GHz, 32GB RAM, SSD, 1080Ti GPU, Windows 10) Not now used with Vegas.

Unless you don't mind waiting several weeks for official support response then it's best to assume to get help here.

Always have the best hardware that u can get/afford.

You can always convert most video files using ffmpeg or ffmpeg based utils, external to VP, to what will work if not working in latest VP.

With the trial, you might not have enough time to see what an update might bring. There is a substantial slice of users that have seen substantial performance degradation in 23 over 22. One particular failure is pan/crop on both stills and videos. So one thing to do is wait for an update and then start a trial.

In capcut pc some times i get 2 big updates in the same day... I hope magix contract more developers or something. For now i continue waiting for buy vegas 23...

I can say with certainty that two updates a day would get very tedious when I’m trying to get something done.

@13Year_User Sorry, 2 big updates in a single day in that manner is not something good in a professional environment.

Yes exactly, i dont say this is the only way to follow, but in my case like a youtuber creator i preffer have optionals updates every days than nothing in many months. I like more vegas because is more fast than other software but i hope if some times can i get updates for fix the bugs or more near feed back for magix team. Anyway i know that all user use vegas for different use like professional content, youtube, tiktok and others

So I'm seeing that the things I use the most - transitions, pan, crop, etc. are problematic. Ya know, I just use this stuff for fun and it's so frustrating that every editing program I have tried is buggy. It ticks me off that I cannot get Vegas 18 or 19 as it seems it is pretty stable. I'm really tired of being a beta tester and AI trainer for other companies - they should be paying me to do that not the other way around. So I guess it is bye to Vegas because they have me between a rock and a hard place with Vegas - I have a choice between a stable program (Vegas 13) that is a total pain because I have to convert video, or a buggy beta version. I'll take neither and keep trying to find a different editing program.

I appreciate the comments.

@Reno What are your personal experiences with the trial of Vegaspro23 sofar?

Reyfox wrote on 11/20/2025, 3:14 PM

@Reno no matter what software you will use, there will be bugs. Nothing is bug free. A trip to any user forum what you will read is people with issues.

You have to download the trial program for yourself and see if it fits your needs and work well on your computer.

I don't think that @Reno is reporting from personal experience but just echoing some issues he heard about...

RogerS wrote on 11/20/2025, 3:57 PM

Reno very explicitly asked for others opinions about the software. Based on the feedback given he/she doesn't event want to try it. Fair enough. we each make our own choices about how we spend our time.

I started with VEGAS Pro 12 and while stable it's completely obsolete for what I do. 21.208 and 23.302 are the builds I have installed here and feel comfortable working with.

@Reno I had 13, loved it for years, but I then had the same issue as you, so had to upgrade to 19. My overall experience was crashing. I jumped at 20 hoping it would be more stable, it wasn’t. Then I seized on a cheap deal for 22 hoping that would be better, but no. Just came back from a trip, started loading the timeline, and crash, and by the third it was the straw that broke the camels back. I’ve just finished the project in DR Studio 20 without a single crash, and it made my PC feel powerful again, editing my GH6 10 bit 4:2:2 files smoothly. Thanks so much for those that have helped me with advice in the past, especially @RogerS and @Reyfox , I’ve really appreciated it, but for me, it’s time to say good bye.

@Vincent-Brice I must admit that DR 20 (so not the Studio version, but the free version) which I also have installed on my PC together with VP23, works amazingly smoother and faster than VP23. But I must also admit that I don't have crashes and issues with VP23 (and also VP23 renders faster than VP22, which is also still present on my PC). The jump from Vegas to Davinci is not easy, because both workflows differ completely (but there 're tons of tutorial videos on YT which help(ed me)).

Since @Reno also has issues with DR on his PC, it isn't easy to give a good advice. I can only advice him to use the 30 day trial version of VP23 to find out himself if VP23 could be a good substitute for his VP13.

Using DaVinci Resolve 20 Studio today just to stabilise GoPro 5.7K video for use in Vegas Pro, DR froze twice requiring End Task in the Task Manager to exit. Also, that same original GoPro 5.7K video plays back much better/smoother in Vegas Pro than in DR (no proxies either way).
