Concerned about buying Vegas 23

I'm a patient person. I love the way I can edit in Vegas. Everything right in front of me. I also have Resolve Studio w/Speed Editor that was gifted to me by my wife a few years ago. I was caught up in the hype. So who would not want to have Resolve? But then I actually started to use it and missed the simplicity of using Vegas to do the same thing. Then I ran into nodes. My brain just can't handle it yet.

Each release of a new version of Vegas was problematic for me with various "pull my hair out" issues. But eventually, my issues were solved and I found Vegas rock stable for me to edit for hours without issues.

I do have VP23, but for me, it isn't ready. Crashing when I click the Render button unless I go for a walk around the block and let VP23 finish doing what it has to. Maybe it is the new UI for the Render templates. I do the same thing in VP22, and it just works, and faster. Again, I love the way I can edit in Vegas, and want it to succeed.

@Vincent-Brice thanks for your kind words. We are all in the same "boat". We all should work together to achieve what we desire in editing, helping each other. You have to use what works for you. Happy editing!

@3POINT There is a sample in this thread:

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/gopro-hero-5-black-video-probem--149801/?page=2#ca943138

Thanks @john_dennis but the sample in that thread is just a Gopro 2.7k clip. @Dexcon has an issue with a Gopro 5.3k clip, that's a huge difference: 2.7k = 2704x1520 and 5.3k= 5312x2988.

I prefer to get a sample from @Dexcon.

Noted.

You're a lucky one, I never get such useful presents from my wife...

About nodes, at first sight it looks very complicated, but playing around with them it is just another way to make complicated compositions in one timeline event instead of using multiple tracks as in Vegas, which can also look very complicated.

Yes, my wife knows I spend a lot of time in front of the computer editing. She heard me talking about how BMD was offering the Speed Editor with Resolve Studio for the cost of Studio alone.

I was excited to get it but honestly, while it does work, I find for me, editing in Vegas much easier. If there was layer based compositing, I might use it more. The same with grading, back to the nodes for something I just don't feel I need. I can easily follow layers. Timeline editing is for me, easier and faster. It is a matter of personal preferences. I am not saying which editor is best, but which one I prefer to edit with.

@Dexcon Thanks for the sample. I put it on a DR20 5312x2988p25 Timeline and it plays butter smooth even with applied stabilization (DR needed about 5 sec to stabilize the clip). Also applying a cut/crossfade and a color correction didn't hamper the preview. So unfortunately, I couldn't confirm your findings. Strange because we both use almost identical hardware.

In VP23 it also plays smooth (only for applying stabilization, Vegas stabilization needed 75 sec) Applying a cut/crossfade and a color correction hampers extremely the preview but only at the crossfade.

Ofcourse tested both without proxies.

@3POINT  ... Thanks so much for checking. After putting on my Sherlock Holmes deerstalker hat, I think I've discovered the problem. I'm not sure how it happened but in DR's Project Settings the timeline resolution was set to 8K. On changing that setting to 4K UHD, playback performance is excellent (constant 25 fps) - even with the Timeline Playback Resolution set to Full.

@Dexcon glad I could put you in the right direction. I also just discovered that, because I have only the free version of DR, the max project/timeline resolution is limited to 4k. I manually set it to 5k to test your file, but it was reset to 4k. (which is more than sufficient for my purpose). So to make a real comparison I should set VP23 also to 4k.
