Crash during editing

Alonzorion wrote on 12/29/2018, 11:43 PM

Encountering an issue on Vegas 15.0 (Build 416) which results in random crashes during editing, unfortunately I don't get any form of report as Vegas itself freezes and I'm forced to crash it through windows. To describe what occurs... the video preview will freeze and the audio from the project will continue to play and then if I attempt to stop it, pause it, whatever, it will automatically crash.

I found a solution to this is to disable GPU acceleration though this is not ideal fix since it means I have to watch back the project preview in a very low quality to maintain a consistent frame rate!

Thanks for any help.

@Alonzorion - Very frustrating indeed. Are you running the latest Build?

OK, there will be a solution. Why? Because others, including myself, are or have been running VP15 successfully. What I strongly suggest is to plough through Nick’s solutions at the top of this Forum. All of us have added our “solution” experiences to the threads there.

Keep us informed. There will be solutions.

Alonzorion wrote on 12/30/2018, 12:05 AM

Is Build 416 the latest? I'm not entirely sure how to check! Once I get time I'll begin working my way through the solutions, at the moment I'm working under pressure and these crashes are driving me crazy hahah, thank you Grazie!

Look in the news section of this forum, they sticky the latest build releases there. Also make sure your GPU drivers are currnet, or if they were just updated, that the update didn't cause the issue (sometimes GPU driver updates throw a wrench in Vegas' spokes). I can only imagine how annoying it has to be for the magix team to get everything working right only to have Nvidia screw it up a week later with a driver update, but I've seen it happen many times.

What GPU are you using?

NickHope wrote on 12/30/2018, 1:52 AM

Here's a checklist of info to provide up front that will help others to help you troubleshoot the issue: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/important-information-required-to-help-you--110457/

Alonzorion wrote on 12/30/2018, 1:55 AM

Build 416 does indeed seem to be the latest! As for my GPU, 980Ti! For Nvidia Drivers, I do have the latest indeed! I try to refrain from updating them too frequently, only doing so if I have a problem and... well I did recently have another problem? which I updated it for. https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-pro-15-not-utilising-cpu-or-gpu-too-well-during-render--114187/ Perhaps this is related? Probably not though, regardless, the issue with slow rendering isn't a MAJOR PROBLEMS (if one at all?) just a minor inconvenience.

Thank you very much fr0sty and I really appreciate the work Magix do. Vegas has really picked up since acquisition.

EDIT: Thanks Nick, I'll fill out these details ASAP and in any future help topics.

To add additional information I missed which are perhaps relevant:

Windows Edition & Version: Windows 10 Home 1803
Footage created by: OBS (Logitech HD Webcam), Audacity (Blue Yeti Microphone), and Mirrilis Action! (game and audio) (All latest versions) though I'm also experiencing this problem with every other form of capture I use, those being from Elgato capture card, other types of OBS, and another program a friend sends me footage from which I can't recall the name of.

Good news is it still seems to be rendering without freezing! Though I did have another project freeze during render in a similar manner, also remedied by disabling GPU acceleration.

If you need any other information, please let me know!

EDIT: Added Project Properties, picture didn't upload originally, I would appreciate some feedback on these as I'm unfamiliar with ACES. Crashes are getting even more frequent and ontop of that I seem to be having some audio to visual desync as frames drop.

EDIT 2: Found that decreasing Dynamic RAM Preview from 200 to 0 helps with the desync, tried a few solutions, nothing worked sadly.

Alonzorion wrote on 12/31/2018, 5:39 AM

The crashes are getting terribly frequent unfortunately and I've had to postpone my work until this is fixed.

j-v wrote on 12/31/2018, 6:03 AM

There is no need to use the project settings you use and those are very much changed from the default ones.
Try these settings for your kind of sourcefiles.

Could you explain why I should reduce the pixel format to 8-bit and change the deinterlacing to blend? It resulted in things looking undesirably washed out due to the change in gamma levels amidst other things. It also didn't fix the problem unfortunately as it crashed immediately, the performance seems no different what so ever?

j-v wrote on 12/31/2018, 7:03 AM

Because you try to make a video I think, or do you make only image sequences.
The video's you use as source have all 8 pixel format and the stills do have more but once in your other video that does not matter

Deïnterlacing settings don,t matter because you only use progressive video and not interlaced.

But probably you are seeing and judging that otherwise, so struggle on, I was only trying to help you. 🙃

The "Before" image is the same colour and gamma level as my source files whereas the "After" is far different, I could show you if you like! Though you are right, they are 8-bit videos so I'm not entirely sure why this happens, I've always selected the 32-Bit Full for that reason, especially since it seems to lock the ability to change the other settings if you don't.

You're right about the deinterlacing settings not mattering for this project, I normally edit videos which are in 60i so that's why I asked, thank you.

NickHope wrote on 12/31/2018, 8:38 AM

What looks "washed out" in your video preview window will probably look correct when the final result is viewed outside of Vegas. And what looks correct in your video preview window will probably have its shadows and highlights clipped when the final result is viewed outside of Vegas. See this: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-why-does-my-video-have-more-contrast-than-the-vegas-preview--104567/

Alonzorion wrote on 12/31/2018, 8:53 AM

Okay, thanks Nick! Though I could use with having it correct in the preview regardless since being able to see the correct lighting and colour would be important... since it didn't actually fix the crashing issue nor the desync, it's not too important regardless!

EDIT: I see in the link you provided you also displayed how to correct the gamma levels inside 8-bit, sorry I missed that.

Good news is I managed to drastically cut down the number of crashes and completely get rid of the desync by changing my Dynamic RAM to "0" and changing Thumbnails to show in events to "None", unfortunately the crashes are still present but this is progress I suppose. Any other suggestions related to these things which might aid in making things more stable?

Split Screen View also may have helped however I can't edit with it on because it removes my chroma keying, amidst other things I need during editing!

Alonzorion wrote on 12/31/2018, 9:22 AM

I have a feeling I've done everything on the general stability sadly, as for the further help, I'll work through that! Hopefully I'll bump into a possible solution.

Alonzorion wrote on 1/1/2019, 10:04 AM

Unfortunately nothing seems to have fixed it, however on closer analysis I have noticed something which seems relevant to the crashing: the longer the project stays open the lower the amount of frames the preview is able to display (regardless of quality) until eventually it becomes so low, it crashes it seems. In about 10 minutes it'll go from outputting a perfect 30 frames to 10.

Alonzorion wrote on 1/1/2019, 4:56 PM

I've also discovered a simple way to make the crash occur just by simply muting and unmuting a track, the preview freezes, then as soon as I hit play, Vegas will crash.

EDIT: Seems to be just because of the offline media, as once removed, this no longer happened, but this does demonstrate what will happen.

Alonzorion wrote on 1/3/2019, 7:55 PM

I'm absolutely baffled, nothing seems to be working, to show how bad it's got Vegas is eating all my i7-6700 CPU for a 1 frame per second preview in Draft Quarter.

@Alonzorion Awfully frustrating.......Can we start over? Can you get some standard type of Video? Something from an actual camera 🎥? Or even 📸 ? Let’s get you up and running or at least determine VP is working with the most plainest vanilla type of Material. Can you do that?

NickHope wrote on 1/4/2019, 1:22 AM

+1 Grazie. Some OBS footage with these well-proven settings would be one option.

I have followed your instructions and the problem seems to be that the more I edit, and the longer Vegas stays open, the lower the number of frames the preview can output until eventually it will just crash due to outputting so few. What could possibly cause this?

Possibly:

1. Bugged memory-management by Vegas. Unlikely or we would have heard more about it, and I myself am using VP15 build 416 all day long without these problems.

2. Some other process on your PC gradually using up RAM.

Autoruns is great for disabling processes that run at Windows startup.

Alonzorion wrote on 1/9/2019, 11:11 AM

I disabled everything I physically could and it seemed to make no difference.

I took this screencap after 30 minutes of editing (usually before a crash occurs and when I'm getting a very low frame rate output via the preview) and then another on a fresh boot, I noticed the CPU/GPU/Memory usage is almost entirely different on both.

Put in a support request if you haven't already. If you've tried everything in those troubleshooting posts that I linked to then the conclusion might be to reinstall Windows. But Support might have something else to suggest first, or some tests for you to run.

Be sure to link to this thread in your support request.
