Easier way to Chroma Key a Green screen?

SnarfConsortium wrote on 10/27/2024, 7:32 AM

I just upgraded from VP21 to VP22 and have been slowly moving projects over as my machine seems to render and have better performance overall with the newer version.

One project that I have requires A LOT of green screen removal (around 140 shots as a rough estimate). In VP21 I was able to just load the media in question into Vegas Effects, drop their 2D preset for green screen over the clip, and that would do an absolutely fantastic job with my fairly uneven green screen.

With VP22, using the Chroma Keyer effect, I can get most of the green screen removed, but end up with really strange fringing and a slight green glow on my subject.

Using the BCC Chroma Key effect, I get a worse fringe around the subject but now it's red instead of green.

With the BCC Chroma Key Studio, I still can't get rid of the red fringing around the subject.

Does anyone have suggestions for tools that work with VP22? Is there any chance of turning on a Legacy Support feature to still be able to utilize the one stop shop of Vegas Effects for my chroma-key needs?

You could try NewBlue's Chroma Key plugin.

Also, VEGAS Effects will still work - just not as a plugin in VEGAS Pro 22. You could load them in the standalone version, process them, and then render them out to files that you use in 22. Or you could do all of this in VEGAS Pro 21 and render out files to use in 22.

Given the red X in BCC, it seems that you might have the trial version. No problem, but try the additional key/blend functions in BCC's Key and Blend Unit such as the highlighted plugins in:

And also try BCC Primatte Studio instead of BCC Chroma Key Studio to see if you get better results there.

@SnarfConsortium I find that Vegas Color Corrector (Secondary) with alpha@0 works rather well when the knock-out color is uneven, as most green-screens will be unless the lighting is perfect. It allows dragging the dropper across the desired knock-out area to get a range of color, saturation, and/or brightness to eliminate. As with Chroma Keyer, make sure your project and preview are set to best.
