Exported project archive. Media imports but timeline events blank.

DietMike wrote on 3/9/2022, 5:23 PM

I exported a vegas project archive. Uploaded that folder to dropbox. Then I downloaded that folder onto my laptop. When I opened the project it asked for the missing files and I select them. But despite this, the timeline is left with a bunch of blank events. No thumbnails on the videos, no waves on the audio. There's no problem with pngs or mp3s on the timeline but my mp4s that I recorded myself using OBS are blank. Whatever I do (saving a new veg, downloading the files again etc) I can't make them sync with the events or whatever is supposed to happen. When I right click on the media and Select Timeline Events nothing happens. Any help would be appreciated.

Vegas Pro 15, windows 10 btw.

This is what the project looks like.

@DietMike Hi, try renaming the missing files before selecting them, Vegas creates temp files & might be ref to the orig blank ones, renaming will start that process afresh, 🙃🤷‍♂️

Alright I'll try that and see how it goes

That didn't work. It even builds them but still nothing.

DietMike wrote on 3/9/2022, 6:15 PM

It only happens with my OBS mp4 files. The png and mp3s I got off the internet work fine. Even one of my mov files works as intended.

Former user wrote on 3/9/2022, 6:25 PM

@DietMike hmm, you say you uploaded them to dropbox to transfer, maybe that's altered them, did you put them in a zipped folder to load into dropbox, can you transfer them some other way?

I don't use dropbox, i use Google rive & put things in zipped folders,

Former user wrote on 3/9/2022, 6:28 PM

@DietMike just thought, i don't know anything about OBS files, do you have whatever created them on both PC's ? maybe it's a missing codec thing, but i'd have thought you'd get a warning,

You might have to convert them, this Handbrake gets recommended a lot https://handbrake.fr/

DietMike wrote on 3/9/2022, 6:37 PM

I've converted them in handbrake but never tried those. I'll try them now. Also they appear fine in the media bin, but they just don't seem to fill the events on the timeline.

Former user wrote on 3/9/2022, 6:46 PM

@DietMike I don't know, If they worked on your other PC but don't now on tis one,

the only way i know of cleaning the Vegas temp files is going to C:\Users\your name\AppData\Local\VEGAS Pro\19.0, delete everything in that folder, Vegas will take a bit of time to load next time but all those files wil be rebuilt & hopefully clear out any temp/BAK files that are holding the import back,

It's got to be either the files were altered when transferring in Dropbox, or there's something different about your PC's or Vegas set-ups.

Tried that just now. Didn't work. I can't even find anything remotely like this on any old threads.

@DietMike I just had a look, i searched OBS but without having that i can't try it,

Have you tried transferring one of the OBS files in a different way just so you know they do work on your Vegas laptop ? maybe with a memory stick or in a zipped folder like i mentioned?

@DietMike  ... Given that the chief suspect would have to be the media, it would be helpful if you could post a detailed MediaInfo report of one of the media events that is problematic. MediaInfo is a free app available from https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo

Unfortunately I'm not at home right now so I can't do that. I can only interact with the ones in my dropbox. Best I can do is record something else with OBS on my laptop.

Former user wrote on 3/9/2022, 7:18 PM

@DietMike understood 👍 would you share the link for one of those files on here, so others can try it, ?

Use the MediaInfo tool Dexcon mentioned, it's free, after download right click on one of the files, open MediaInfo, choose Text from the View tab, select all - cop n paste on here.

This is what MediaInfo says about one of the files. I actually don't think it's a problem with the files because they play fine in VLC but I also don't know a lot about this stuff so maybe.

Also none of the blank events have active take names. These blank events would be made up of my mp4 files.

Is your cloud drive large enough and your Internet connection fast enough to have actually transferred the media files?

I believe so. They play fine.

Thank you for posting the MediaInfo.

The Codec ID of your media is "isom", perhaps a container that Vegas Pro does not recognise - it's certainly not listed as a supported format in https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/us/specifications/#productMenu (the supported formats are listed below the specs).

Also, the mp4 format noted in the isom listing is mp41 which according to a Wikipedia article about MP4 is a short-lived format in 2001 that was replaced in 2003 by MP42: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG-4_Part_14 . In a MediaInfo report on one of my XAVC files, the Codec ID is given as "XAVC (XAVC/mp42/iso2). Whether or not mp41 and mp42 are interchangeable is a question I haven't been able to ascertain.

Doing an internet search re isom, not very much comes up except for a few questions on different forums years ago mainly relating to people being unable to play video, audio or both of isom media on their media players. The main recommendation, when there was one, was to transcode/remux to another format.

There are members of this forum who are way cleverer than I at interpreting codec data so hopefully one or more of those experts will be able to chip in here.

BTW, the MI report shows that the image size is 3840 wide but only 1080 high - so the width is 4k width but the height is HD height. That's an aspect ratio of 3.56:1.
