💡(Feature Request) Vertical Layout

m3lquixd wrote on 12/18/2022, 9:08 AM

Man, it's really frustrating to see that even filmora has the vertical layout option and vegas doesn't... filmora being considered an amateur software... guys even has an adjustment layereeeeesss!! any editing software, even a mobile app, has this... please vegas dev team let's focus on really important features, it's internet age!
ps. vegas adjustment layer doesn't count. we need an "adjustment event"

I'm not talking about rendering, this can be customized the way the user wants for years. I'm talking about the layout of the windows.
You can put the preview next to the timeline to have a better use of the screen, which can have a better workflow!

vertical layout

Something like this? :

all major software provides this. premiere, hitfilm, even filmora which is an inferior program... because companies know that vertical videos are on the rise

Can't say I am seeing the problem with VP19. I just undocked the Video Preview, set everything up for Vertical, saved it as a Window Layout, exited the project.

Restarted VP19, and everything was right where I left it.

It looks like he undocked the preview window, and shrunk VEGAS so it no longer filled the right portion of the screen, then he dragged the preview window over to that empty space on the right... so the window isn't "docked" into the UI, but it does work the same.

but it is exactly as I showed in the video above, please guys watch the video .... I undocked the preview, put it on the side of the vegas, but when I change the layout and come back it does not continue the way it should

Please, I ask that before answering, watch the video I sent. watching the video you will understand what I'm talking about.
But anyway that doesn't change the fact that vegas doesn't have a fully modular interface, making it possible to fit the preview to the side of the screen.

The timeline itself is the online non-modular element of the UI, and I agree it too should be able to be docked anywhere. I know the team is focusing on updating the performance and stability right now, but they also are making really good progress with new features in updates. We'll make sure they are aware of the need, though there's no telling how long the fix will take to implement, test, etc.

@m3lquixd, I'm sorry, but I really don't see the problem. I did this:

  1. Resize the VEGAS window so that there is rooom on the right side of my screen for the Video Preview window the size I want it to be
  2. Undock the Video Preview window
  3. Move the Video Preview window into the space I made to the right of my main window
  4. you can decide whether to move the Trimmer window over into a floating dock with the Video Prview window (like I did in my screen shot) or just close it if you never use it
  5. Choose View | Window Layouts | Save Layout As and give it a name

Once I did that, I can switch back and forth between my new layout and the default all day long with no problem.

For the record, VEGAS has been able to do this for over 25 years--long before Filmora or any other competitor—consumer or pro—even thought it was something important to do. So, yes, it is possible. Could we make it easier? Yes, and that's a good idea and noted. Thanks for bringing it up. Could we make the timeline act like a dockable, sizable window? In theory, yes, but that's a very complex thing to do and certainly it's arguable whether that's the best use of the team's time. Very little else could get done while that effort was underway.

Adjustment layers is another complex problem due to the internal compositing model that VEGAS uses. It's been long discussed and we are considering options. Rest assured that it's not because we don't want to do it that we haven't.

I would like to be able to actually fit the video preview to the side, it's more practical. even to be able to move the vegas window at once, not having to move the timeline and then the preview.
Even in Vegas Effects we can do that. and it is a Vegas family software. (I know it's made by a third party, but for those who don't know, they believe it's made by the same company, and should follow standards)

about the "adjustment event" I know it would be a lot of work, because I would have to change many of the logics that vegas works with. however it would be very useful, it would open up a range of possibilities for us editors.

Thank you for responding and considering the suggestions. but what saddens me is being able to see these features in other software, and not having them in my software that I've been using for over 10 years.

@m3lquixd I don't understand what the problem is. I was able to set Vegas Pro 19 for vertical preview, save it as a Window Layout, and could exit the software, restart it and it would be there. In addition, when working with 16:9 video, I can go back and forth between 9:16 and 16:9 without issue.

Yes, it takes a little more time and adjustment, but once done, at least on my computer, that's it.

I also think - if an activity is frequently recurring and needed by really many users, then it really makes sense to invest a lot of developer work to simplify it.
But if it's maybe once a month or even less, then it's not worth all the artificial fuss (see post #1).

But even what I create videos or photos on the smartphone, I prefer to do wide format and only in exceptional cases - when the image detail requires it - portrait format.

Since I watch my movies on the TV and not on the smartphone ...

We'll know that 9:16 is the 'real thing' when movies like Avatar 2 are released in 9:16 rather than 2.39:1 (theatrical) and 1.85:1 (3D + IMAX).

But 9:16 is fine for those only catering for those with phones who are unable to twist their phones 90 degrees - or are creating advertisements for 9:16 displays in shopping malls and the like.

What those doing domestic 9:16 framing may not realise is that using a phone camera in 9:16 with the aim of showing it on a 16:9 TV is that the phone's vertical resolution of 3840 pixels (with 4K selected) is that the 3840 rez image is squishoed to 2160 pixels on a 4K TV this being the vertical resolution of a 4K TV. That's a big loss of resolution - and with big black bars L/R of the 9:16 image. Of course, zooming in on the 9:16 image to reduce the size of the L/R black bars further reduces the vertical rez. This can be seen regularly on TV news programs with phone footage filmed in 9:16 mode that has to be 'processed' by the TV station. With phone camera users, I'm not sure if its laziness or ignorance that is the cause - probably the latter.
