Graphics card suggestion?

Dave-B wrote on 9/16/2022, 2:52 PM

At some point in the near future I plan to get a dedicated graphics card for (hopefully) faster rendering. I like to use the Voukoder encoder, but the Intel QSV option is not available. Even with the Magix AVC/AAC MP4 format I don't see much of a speed improvement when encoding with the QSV option. I was hoping someone could recommend an affordable (under $200-ish) graphics card that meets the requirements listed here. I've been looking around, but there are soooooo many potential choices. Using Vegas Pro 18 on Windows 11.

Thanks!
Dave

That Intel QSV is part of an Intel processor and the recommended ones are working only good when the latest drivers for them are installed.
What is your processor?

My processor is Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8700 CPU @ 3.20GHz on an HP Pavillion. Intel UHD 630 display adapter. I have the latest drivers from HP. I found a slightly newer one from Intel but it won't install. It said something to the effect that the driver is locked to the vendor. So unless HP offers a new driver I'm out of luck.

At Vegas Pro 18 it is possible to check and download the needed drivers in the menu Help/ Check for Driver Updates. Sadly since ayear this option works not anymore for Intel drivers because of changes on the Intell websites.
I have also that Intel 630 and the latest and best driverversion is gfx_win_101.3222_101.2111. At Windows it is called version nr 31.0.101.2111

I've found the Intel Arc a380 is the best so far for qsv. Btw, if you install Voukoder v11.1, whether you have an Arc or not, you'll get qvs options in Voukoder if you select Vegas to use Intel (power saving). On the laptop I just installed, it looks like this in Win11 Settings under System/Display/Graphics:

Setting is in the same place in Win10 21h2 also.

UPDATE: Voukoder 12 beta4 works the same way.

UPDATE2: Voukoder 12beta6 fixes the need to point Vegas or Resolve Studio to Intel in System/Display/Graphics to get qsv render options for hevc and avc in the Voukoder plugin. Still no qsv_vp9 even though it's in all the ffmpeg daily and release 5.12 versions. Or qsv_av1 which is in the daily ffmpeg versions.

Thanks Howard, but that didn't work. Oh well. Also, after doing some research, it appears my computer only has a 180 watt power supply which is insufficient for some of the better graphics cards. For now my video stuff is for personal use, but I could potentially be making some sort of income from it eventually. I guess I'll wait until then to upgrade everything.

I've tried them both and have tested them on multiple machines with win10 and win11 but ... try this version of 11.1 that he's got on github:

https://github.com/Vouk/voukoder/releases/download/11.1-IntelARC/voukoder-11.1-IntelARC.msi

I just installed it to a new laptop, and it looks like this:

If you have an Intel igpu and don't see any qsv, your Windows Settings for your version of Vegas are not in place. If you have multiple versions like vp18 and vp19, you have to do an entry for each one that runs with the Voukoder plugin. I didn't have to reboot after making the Windows entries, but you might want to try that too. Also, you do need to explicitly uninstall Voukoder before you can install an older version.

Brain fart. I was looking in the wrong place. I see it now.

Btw, before anyone runs out to buy a $140 arc card for an older mb, ads say it requires bios support for Resizable BAR. Not sure that's true for a 2nd gpu simply decoding and encoding but I'll be testing that when I get some more. Will report on how that goes in my older systems. {ps: I got 3 of them by using the backorder button}

ps: in stock again at the moment

pps: worked fine but got no performance improvement in an older system with a 980x cpu and a Vega64 gpu.
