Hauling in a DaVinci Resolve (lite) project into Vegas Pro?

eyekaider wrote on 5/31/2020, 3:18 AM

I have a massive project, now several hours long, that needs to be whittled down to under an hour or less. I was editing this project for a while and wish to continue this in Vegas Pro now that I use it, if possible. It is just in edit phase, no grading or anything like that was done. What is the best practice to bring a Resolve (lite) project into Vegas?

In Resolve: File > Export AAF, XML... > FCP 7 XML V5 Files (*.xml)

In VEGAS, File > Import > Final Cut Pro 7 / DaVinci Resolve (*.xml)...

If it doesn't work, you might need to remove all instances of "file://localhost/" from the xml file using a text editor. See this post. Please let us know what works.

If you wanted to bring across clips with grading or other FX then you'd need to render intermediates such as Grass Valley HQX.

@NickHope Thanks, I got 'Format element doesn't have a "fieldOrder" attribute'. Looks like I will need to fire up a text editor and see what's what. It'll be great to use an NLE on this project without limits. : - )

I just tried it here again with a simple UHD progressive project and a simple interlaced HDV project. In both cases I still need to remove all instances of "file://localhost/" from the xml file. But I don't see that "fieldOrder attribute" error. Is some of your footage interlaced?

@NickHope I am now in the process of restoring the project in VP, because it is so massive, it is taking a while...but looks good so far. However, I have these errors, https://pastebin.com/uMc7W1q7 should I be worried?

Wait, I exported the final cut pro/resolve file onto my desktop and now it is cluttered with hundreds of VP files, .veg...hundreds and hundreds and it is not stopping. What do I do? Can I cut and move these files or should I delete and rebuild in another folder?

That looks OK. MediaInfo is detecting it as variable frame rate, but it probably isn't. It's probably constant frame rate. MediaInfo tends to do that sometimes.

I don't really know. If the events look OK in VEGAS then you can probably ignore the audio errors. It looks like you have some cropping that you would need to re-do in VEGAS.

I don't know why those would be there. If you've already got a .veg VEGAS Pro project then maybe you can delete them. Or they might be nested projects that are nested in your master project? I'm not greatly experienced with this; I only transferred a few simple timelines.

eyekaider wrote on 6/1/2020, 2:57 AM

@NickHope I deleted them and cancelled the restore. Then I made another folder elsewhere so my desktop is not cluttered. The extensions are .veg, .sfap0, and are several gigs. Perhaps about 20 gigs of files. Am not sure what they are there for. As long as I can restore and continue the project, it's okay. Since this is big and important to me, I don't want the project compromised or corrupted down the road.

NickHope wrote on 6/1/2020, 3:16 AM

.veg are project files, whether the master project or nested projects. .sfap0 files are audio proxy files (see here) created when projects are nested.

What's the structure of your Resolve project? If it consists of multiple timelines, maybe they've come into VEGAS as nested projects. That would actually be nice, if it works properly.

eyekaider wrote on 6/1/2020, 3:57 AM

@NickHope During restore VP hung, so I killed it and when I restarted, it resumed restoration. Pretty good! There are about 80 gigs of VP files now in that folder on my OS drive. The project is on two SSD drives and have only the interview and lecture portions (6 hours in total) on the timeline which I am whittling down. Then there will be b-roll, audio field recordings, photos, diagrams and ideally more. If those are proxy files, then I can probably delete them. Am not sure what 'nested files are though...? (Thanks for the links by the way, that Vegasaur might help clean up that large folder.) So the project is restored and some interview audio is not synced. I have lav-to-camer audio and another mic and I sync them in Resolve and it looks like I may need to resync some of them in VP. Also, for audio two, VP put each on a new track, so there are a couple hundred audio tracks.

There are plenty of resource and tutorials online that explain nested timelines, as well as the manual. Nested projects have been around for a while, then in VP17 they were integrated a little bit more and named "nested timelines", but the underlying tech is still the same. They're still separate child projects embedded in the parent project.

Your project sounds ambitious and complex. To get that to convert over at all successfully is quite a feat. Good luck cleaning it up.

Why did you switch from Resolve?

eyekaider wrote on 6/1/2020, 4:36 AM

@NickHope Is there a way to tell VP to work off the original files or do you think I should let it do its thing? Resolve was working off my original files so am not sure why VP generated and deployed proxies.

I was using Resolve (lite) for years but was/am struggling with completing projects because of barriers.I also tried (paid) Lightworks and struggled with the interface, among other issues. It is very good, but tough to get used to. I was trained in Adobe CC, but find them too expensive.

I got fed up when I worked one client job and Resolve (lite) either played back the footage too fast or slow (which is the art gallery one you helped me with). The technicians on the BlackMagic forums said if I paid for Studio, the footage would play back normal speed. There were work-arounds, but they took too long to find, like an Easter egg hunt each time. Also, there are issues with Resolve when it comes to saving some projects that make me very nervous.

I have a lot of large, unfinished projects and need to go with something reliable to bring each of them home to delivery. VP listened when I asked for Colorgrade and it looks like V-Post has some useful tools that I can use. I am taking a risk and seeing if I can finish these big (and small) projects in Vegas Pro/Post without hassle. I read so much about how reliable and powerful VP is. If I can get work done and not get nervous/frustrated/waste time, then I made the right choice. We will see, this is a calculated risk. There is a learning curve, but am happily adapting. So far I like Vegas.

The sfap0 files are just AUDIO proxies that are normal and expected when doing nesting in Vegas.

But 80 gigs does sound like video proxies may be getting generated too. That might be to do with the transfer from Resolve, or if some of your media is >4k resolution there's a preference to automatically create proxies (Options > Preferences > Video > Automatically....). I always have that preference unchecked.

You didn't say anything about the structure of your project in Resolve. Does it include multiple timelines? If so, would you be wanting them to come into Vegas as nested timelines? Or would you prefer just a single timeline with every event (VEGAS-speak for "clip") relating to a single media file?

Switching source media for an event is done one at a time in the Project Media window by right clicking an item and choosing "Replace...".

If you now have a Vegas timeline with events on it, right click some of them and choose "Select in Project Media list". If they are .veg files then they are nested projects/timelines. If they are media files such as .mp4 or .mov then they are not, and you can replace the media items as described above.

If they are nested projects then select one on the timeline and choose the "Open nested timeline" button at the right end of the row of icons below the timeline. Then you'll go into the nested child project and you can replace media items there in the same way I described.

In this 80 gigs, what are the larger files named? What file extension?

Dexcon wrote on 6/1/2020, 5:59 AM

... every event (VEGAS-speak for "clip")

Just a bit of trivia. In the the first (I think it was) Vegas Pro Webinar in April this year, Gary said that the full name is 'clip event' but is shortened to 'event'. I thought at the time that this could mean that using the term 'clip' isn't strictly a mis-name.

eyekaider wrote on 6/1/2020, 11:03 AM

@NickHope Right now it is (supposed to be) just one massive timeline with all the interview footage, not multiple timelines. I am not 'pro' enough to do anything more sophisticated at this time. Though it does seem like a good idea to examine for future projects. The file sizes range from kb to megabytes, some about a gig. Extensions are sfap0, .veg, or .MOV4.veg or .wav1.veg.sfp0

Now that my audio is spread across some 200 tracks, how do I get them onto one for easier ediiting? It should be one track with lav-to-camera and another with other mic's.

NickHope wrote on 6/1/2020, 1:35 PM

To get all the audio on one track, make sure snapping is on (the red magnet icon below the timeline) then select all the events on one track with a marquee using the Selection Edit Tool (also in that row of icons below the timeline) and then drag them up onto the track you want them on and drop. Unfortunately you'll have to do that 200 times but it shouldn't take long. Then delete the tracks when they're empty.

That's a bit of a weird collection of file extensions. It sounds like everything on your timeline might have become nested during the transfer from Resolve. If that's the case and you don't want them nested, you might have to drill down into each nested project, copy the media from the timelines and paste it into a new project in a 2nd instance of VEGAS.

Maybe someone else who has done Resolve > Vegas conversions can chip in if they know what might have happened.

eyekaider wrote on 6/1/2020, 1:55 PM

@NickHope All footage is HD, so I unchecked the generate proxies option. Maybe I should rebuild the project again. Right now the timeline is mixed with source and proxy footage. So, for example, I get audio source one, two, and a proxy file thrown in--so three audio sources. I suspect BlackMagic, among other companies, do this on purpose to discourage round-tripping and keep users locked in. Add to that, VP is now crashing because of this project. Though the recovery is better than most NLE's. Though I am not sure about manually rebuilding this project in a seperate VP session.

I see what it is doing, it has replaced all my working files with proxies. Is there a way to turn proxies off? Replace will not work because in the media section, the source is there with about two kinds of proxies with it. I want it to use original files and leave proxies out.
