@iEmby These render with an alpha channel, (there might be others) I know nothing of the Quicktime 7 & MagicYUV is paid for but I just use the native ProRes.

---

Yep big files, MagicYUV creates an AVI that is just as big as ProRes if not bigger (I'll test that again), with Voukoder I had problems with it rendering with an alpha but that was prob user error & that was a long time ago, I gave up on that & just stuck with ProRes.

@iEmby A simple trial, no effects or animation. MagicYUV was lightning fast compared to the others but you can see the size of the file.

All load into Vegas no prob, Quicktime & Voukoder needed the alpha changing in Properties once dragged into Vegas but that was again prob user render error.

Voukoder https://www.voukoder.org/forum/thread/783-downloads-instructions/

MagicYUV https://www.magicyuv.com/

ProRes should be in your list & I don't know about Quicktime, I have Quicktime installed on my PC but whether its a native Vegas option or because I have Quicktime installed I don't know.

There's an option in Preferences

john_dennis wrote on 5/1/2024, 11:23 AM

You can use uncompressed AVI with alpha channel in any version of Vegas. You can minimize the file size if the animation doesn't traverse the whole screen by rendering to a pixel dimension that just covers the animation.

paul-marshall wrote on 5/1/2024, 11:50 AM

Apple ProRes seems to be the only workable option, apart from QuickTime which has been deprecated for some time. Could it be that files are large because transparency is not possible in an efficient high compression codec.

I find it odd that we are so dependent on Apple. I asked MS Copilot "Why are there no windows video encoding format which supports an alpha channel?"

Part of it's reply: " The absence of native Windows video encoding formats that directly support an alpha channel (transparency) is indeed a limitation. However, there are some workarounds and alternative approaches:

Existing Formats with Alpha Channels:

While Windows does not have a built-in format specifically designed for alpha channels, you can use existing formats that support transparency. For example:

  • Apple ProRes 4444: Although primarily associated with Apple platforms, it can be used on Windows as well. It supports 16-bit alpha channels.
  • AV1: AV1 is an open-source video codec that has the potential to support alpha channels, but its current status is marked as “unknown” regarding alpha support.
  • HEVC (H.265): While not explicitly designed for alpha channels, you can preserve alpha by adjusting settings during encoding.
  • FFV1 (FFmpeg video codec): A lossless codec that supports RGB and variants with alpha channels.

Its diappointing that AV1 doesnt (yet?) support alpha channel and I see no way to use H.265 or FFV1 in Vegas so thank you Apple!

When you created the logo animation entirely in Vegas, instead of rendering to a huge video format with alpha channel for using the animation in another Vegas project, just NEST that logo animation VEG into another Vegas project. Saves the money to buy a new HD.

When you have to send the logo animation, to be used in another NLE, than probably a zipped file with the png image sequence is the easiest solution. Otherwise you have to install Quicktime to get a video sequence with alpha channel at normal/usable size.

If you don't want to load Quicktime in Vegas Pro, you could:

  1. render locally to an uncompressed Video for Windows with alpha
  2. convert the Video for Windows with alpha file to Quicktime Animation in Shutter Encoder
  3. transmit your Quicktime Animation file to your colleague
  4. let her convert to whatever file type she wants to use on her system

@iEmby I can't open your 2 files in Vegas either. I get the black circle with a line through it.

I can into MS2024 tho, is he meant to be walking slowly?

I don't have the Pro version, but this is what I used for the test I posted earlier.

these files it give as output which i cant import.
one of them file was showing .mp4 while rendering but after that it was avi. and i dont know avi in not importing in my vegas... guide me pls.

Downloaded and MediaInfo-checked, Video AVC - Audio PCM.

Usually when video stream is AVC h.264 stream, that is also followed with Audio stream AAC compressed as well. Audio PCM is WAV uncompressed equal (so far I know), so probably why these didn't read well by VP21.

Also, usually the container for this AVC is MP4 besides of AVI.

OT: Resolve can't read the media as well.

Just tried the Boy Walk avi and it would not load in vp21 b208 or 300. MediaInfo says it's 4:2:0, not any kind of 4:4:4. Repackaged into a mov and Vegas recognizes it with it's pcm audio stream. But aspect ratio is all messed up in b300 unless I manually change it from square to 1.7778 in project properties. Looks fine in vp21 b208 but gives an edit-ability warning... inspection of the gop histogram indicates a single gop for the entire clip.
