Incredibely slow rendering on VP20 compared to VP15 (Radeon 6900XT)

Hello!

Last night I upgraded from VP15 to VP20. First thing I noticed was much much MUCH smoother project timeline and playback. Hoping to see some rendering improvements I started rendering my next video, but then I noticed someting odd. VP20 renders about 4-6 times slower than VP15 I was using before while using the same rendering settings (AMD VCE h264 or h265). Other than that it renders videos by 5 frames intervals. If I choose less performance intensive render like 1080p it just decreases the time between the intervals, but why does it even do that?

Like I said I was using VP15 for the last 3 years and even though it run slower while editing - rendering times were 4-6 times shorter.

I'm using Ryzen 5700x and Radeon 6900XT. Ofc GPU is selected in the preferences and I'm on the latest drivers. Reinstalling VP20 did nothing. VP 15 still works fine. What can I do with this? Did I just burn 80€ for an upgrade, or is this a bug that can be fixed. Here are the links in which you can see the abyssmaly slow rendering times with this weird 5 frames interval rendering.

Which rendertemplate (customized?) did you use in both?

I was using exactly the same ones in VP15. h264 settings are more or less the same.

Try a standard benchmark project in 20 and see how it compares to similar hardware. In general render times have improved.

The GPU may be waiting on the CPU to give it frames. What's the media specifically?

Benchmark is among the top results so performing as expected there.

The media decoders have been a work in progress since 15. I can't recall when AMD decoding was added- it might have been with 16. If you wanted to see if it makes a difference check enable legacy AVC in preferences/ file io and see if that helps with this media. That should bring it back to VP 15 or earlier performance and perhaps that will be reflected in render times.
(In general you'd want to keep legacy unchecked to make the most of your hardware)

Other ideas- if you're not on the latest AMD Pro driver or 22.5.1 switch to those.
You could turn off the preview window during render if there are resource conflicts (probably won't help).
You could render through Voukoder which can be faster.

I've found something. My editor uses an older VP version (VP13 or VP15) for her projects. If I load them into VP20 they render incredibely slowly, but in VP15 they render fine. Only thing she does is cut the videos in some moments, no special effects or anything other is added. Maybe that's the problem? We both work on the same source file. When I make a new project in VP20 the video renders incredibely fast. I get around 115fps.

Weird! One idea then is to open both programs. Cut and paste the old timeline into a new one and see if it helps.

Also make sure the editor has quantize to frames turned on and is snapping to frame boundaries. (just a guess)

Make sure that resampling mode in VP20 is not set to "optical flow" ( a new feature) which could dramatically slow down rendering speed when project framerate differs from media framerate when resampling mode is active.

I think if you check both of the legacy boxes on the io tab, vp20 will use the same algorithms for decoding as were used in vp15. Unchecking them and using amd decoding would probably give you better results for more standard frame-rates and intra footage, as found in the benchmark. But you're footage is a non-standard double frame-rate (60.000 fps vrs 59.94) with long gop (N=120 vrs 1) which Vegas and gpu hardware isn't very good with. Manually setting the render template to 60.000 fps, as you've done, should help avoid resampling as long as you do the same in your project settings. While you're at it make sure vp20 project settings are set to 8-bit legacy/video range and, as suggested above, change optical flow to disable resampling.
