MPG Clips will only import video and not audio

John-Phillips wrote on 11/3/2020, 7:46 AM

Hello. I have just updated Vegas Pro 18 and I find that some mpg clips are no longer being imported with audio - only the video component is there. The same clips worked fine before the update. In fact, I have had to restore my pc to the original Vegas Pro 18 settings as I need this facility. I won't agree to "update" again until I know a fix. Please help!

I have the same problem. I edited projects with VP18 build 334 having .mpg files in them no problems. In build 373, dropping the same clips on the timeline only create a video track, no audio. Here is a sample mediainfo. BTW, the .mpg file was created with VP18 build 334 DVD camcorder import tool (available in the deprecated features). The file plays correctly with audio in VLC. The AC-3 decoder seems to be gone from build 373.

I extracted only the audio from the .mpg file using ffmpeg to a .ac3 file. VP18 373 will not even allow me to drop that to the timeline.

I am able to drop a .mts file that contains 5.1 AC-3 no problems, audio track is there. So I converted my .mpg to a .mts container using ffmpeg and now VP18 373 is able to see the audio! Here is my command line if you want:

ffmpeg -i "d:\5\VTS_01_1 (01).mpg" -vcodec copy -acodec copy d:\5\output.mts

Thanks for all your comments! I would rather not have to do that extra step of converting mpg to mts so I'm inclined not to update Vegas 18 Pro unless a fix is found. Any advice from the Vegas team?

VEGASDerek wrote on 11/4/2020, 7:13 AM

It is our advice to transcode this media so the audio does not us AC-3.

I know - it has been great for me up to now. That's so frustrating that it now requires an extra step. I will not upgrade Vegas 18 Pro then unless you can suggest something else I can do so that all mpg files will work. I have quite a lot of them!

EricLNZ wrote on 11/4/2020, 10:03 PM

It's the same with the latest VMS17 update.

Mpg and VOB files with AC3 audio now don't import the audio stream!!!

Yet 1080 mts and m2ts files with AC3 audio do import the audio stream.

@VEGASDerek Whats the difference with AC3 in mpg compared to mts, other than different plug-ins are used to decode?

VEGASDerek wrote on 11/5/2020, 8:11 AM

Mpeg files, which is a less frequently used older format, use a main concept decoder which requires a different audio decoder to handle its AC3 audio than mts and m2ts media. We are no longer able to use that decoder. We are looking at routing this through a new demuxer so the audio would be available again, but for now we are recommending transcoding files of this type.

wwaag wrote on 11/5/2020, 10:49 AM

You can easily do this using the ImportAssist tool in HappyOtterScripts https://tools4vegas.com/ Here's a demo.

In the demo the MPG file is "rewrapped" into an MP4 container. The video stream is simply copied so there is no loss of quality. Only the audio stream is re-rendered from AC3 to pcm.

I am having the same issue with an edit I had in progress using build 334 where the audio import worked fine. Now I have made the mistake of upgrading and now many of my clips have no audio. Are you saying you are not able to use the decoders because you can't get the licence or they just won't work with the latest coding. Either way having to go back and recode all my old MPEG 2/VOB files really isn't on - I have a ton of them!

Please fix this and soon. - or do you have a way of opening an edit in ProV17 so I can at least finish the edit without having to start over.

@david-fairweather It may be possible to load up vp18 project and do a complete select all, then copy and paste to an empty vp17.

I'm wondering if there has been any update on fixing this problem as I am still having to click on "do not update" every time I start Vegas. I only have Vegas 18 so I cannot do what is suggested above.

JN- wrote on 11/18/2020, 9:17 AM

@John-Phillips Maybe bite the bullet as VEGASDerek has suggested and convert the audio.

The following (dropbox download link here) will copy the video and convert the audio to aac at 128, 192, 256 or 320 KB, you can change the audio data rate to your liking. Use Mediainfo to see what the source files data rate is if you wish to match it.

Ugh, you mean I just paid megatubs to "upgrade" from Vegas 12 only to have them take away the ability to import the VOB files I authored with Vegas years ago? Thanks for providing a temporary workaround, and shame on Magix.

I felt the same. Worst, I came from Vegas 14 and I tested the trial of Vegas 18 before buying. The feature was still in Vegas 18 on the first build and update 1. It got removed in update 2. A shame yes.

I'm really unhappy with Vegas now and will not recommend it to anyone. I don't feel that I should have to faff around with code to restore something that used to work. I'm looking for a simple editing package that produces high quality results like Vegas used to.
