My "mojo" is under siege.

@john_dennis dang!! That's disappointing, and infuriating! It's like Vegas is trying to get you to use something else. While I always have "something else" to use, I prefer editing in Vegas. But if it doesn't want to cooperate...

I haven't edited with Win10 in a long time. I've moved to Win11 Pro. Mind you, I have subzero love for Win11, but since I was installing a fresh OS on a new NVME drive, I figured why not? I still have my Win10 Pro drive in the computer and can always default to that one if I have issues. But so far, no need.... yet....

Oh, and I remember that song from back in the day. I was in college then... love the lip sync! But it looks like a monkey is stopping the show sadly.

@Reyfox I watched a VegasPro documentary yesterday, they showed a google Trends graph plotting it's rise and fall, I have made something similar

The documentary blames not reliability but lack of features which allowed Premiere/FInalCut/Resolve to take it's users. Don't think it's that simple. It doesn't explain how FIlmora is still strong and apparently growing surpassing Vegas Pro users, and doesn't explain the consumer level editor Capcut's explosive rise.

If Magix had fixed all Vegas's problem in VP15 via new render engine instead of the low quality GPU decoder/encoder plugins, then I think Vegas's graph line could have stabilized or even risen. Just needed to not crash all the time.

RogerS wrote on 7/18/2023, 10:01 PM

The Google Trends is more interesting broken down by region as the world is very much not flat when it comes to searches/interest in it.

VEGAS definitely fell behind on feature addition and development in the last days of Sony as well as marketing. It coasted by on loyalty for a while but users began to leave. Would be interesting to plot Sony's own effort "Catalyst" and see how that went.

I did see others come to a similar conclusion that VP 13-15 was the time the program needed to invest in a new, modern video engine (and maybe interface to go along with it so the program didn't feel outdated). Magix just didn't seem to invest in development and squandered years.
Never used Capcut but Filmora has its limits and I can imagine users there eventually migrating to more capable software if VEGAS has both the features they want, isn't too obtuse to learn, and is reliable.

An announcement should be coming soon that will make a lot of people in this thread very happy.

@Former user I find that advertising of any type is important. Being in the "face" of everyone helps to drive sales. And then, what are the Youtube influencers raving about this week. That too moves traffic. People are always looking for the next "new" exciting thing, even if what they already have is functional. We see this in everything, consumerism. I've gotten off that treadmill a long time ago.

The video editing market is flooded with editing software at all different levels of editing. A lot of it is free, and are "one click" wonders that require your finger and a mouse click to create something. I'm not really interested in that myself. I personally like using Vegas, even though I have 6 other editors on my computer. The one I open first is always Vegas.

Yesterday, I removed Windows Update KB5028937 because it came in since I restored my last image backup.

Today, I was able to rework six Vegas Pro projects and render the output without fault or hang. Looking at the Reliability History, after the fact, I see seven Vegas Pro events that I was completely unaware of.

All were BEX64

On the Windows Update KB5028937, correlation doesn't prove causation.

Just when I thought I could get a couple hours in without someone reminding me that I'm running hardware/firmware/drivers/applications, Photoshop posted this for the first time in the twenty plus years that I've run the program:

Techno-philosophical question of the day.

Since I have thirty-two CPU cores and sixty-four GB of memory, do you suppose Photoshop could squeeze out a red-eye reduction without forcing me to update my video driver for a device that I'm not using for anything except driving a monitor?

I seem to remember Elements 7 being able to get it done.

Even on a good day, I'm getting waaaaaay more help to do my job than I desire.

mark-y wrote on 7/19/2023, 11:44 AM

My July updates came and went, but KB5028937 was not among them.

By far, the biggest problem updates occur when I'm in the middle of a $3000 project with a deadline. I use Aeomi for my bimonthly drive images and nightly file backups.

I have a really simple system for file backups -- if it's on my desktop overnight, it gets backed up.

john_dennis wrote on 7/19/2023, 12:22 PM

@mark-y

I used Aomei Backupper until I worked on a laptop for my son that had Intel Optane memory. I couldn't get the Aomei standalone boot disk to see the Optane drive. I found that Macrium Reflect could get it done, so I switched. I suspect I could still back up all of my systems with Aomei.

"... if it's on my desktop overnight, it gets backed up."

I use system image restores to get rid of stuff that's sitting on my desktop.

@Reyfox I think that's most likely very true with the Davinci Resolve uptick in the last few years, it coincides perfectly with what looks like stealth marketing from BM via influencers. It could be that which google trends is picking up on, and the uptick doesn't actually represent that level of new users, but rather multiple larger YouTubers make a video called 'Why i'm moving to Davinci Resolve' giving millions of impressions

Reyfox wrote on 7/21/2023, 1:40 PM

@Former user Vegas doesn't get the "air play" that Resolve has. All those "I switched..." videos get tons of views, and when they mention that there is a free version, who can't resist "free"? But then, when they install it, it's a different story.

I don't see any videos like that for Media Composer users....
