Fine machine, maybe power supply a bit more horsepower (future graphics cards)!

That is a nice setup. I also agree with increasing the Power Supply a bit. Even though AMD has made strides with the "Zen 2" processors, as of which you have picked, they still tend to "suck down" the power, just like their Intel desktop counterparts. If you can find say a Corsair or EVGA 750 Watt, it will do you better in the long run.

You don't have any CPU cooling listed. I know the 3900X is supposed to have the Wraith Spire or something, but since you are using this baby beasty for video editing, we all know what Heat does to our poor machines! Just do a little research on the after-market coolers, whether you prefer Air or Water (All-in-One) is your choice. If you like Air, check the beQuiet or Noctua (they even have the new Chromax one that is black and not that nasty brown!). For AIO, I have not used one for a few years now, though the newer Corsair Hydro, NZXT Kraken, etc. seem to be competitive. For those, definitely do some research on the mounting, as well as some YouTube videos.

Based on your PCI-e NVME drive selection, both are fine, and I assume (yeah, I shouldn't do that!) you are using the 500GB for the OS/Applications, then I would suggest putting that drive on the second M-2 slot, which according to the manual is the one with the Heat Sink over the slot on the lower part of the board. That one is accessing the lanes via the Chipset. The one directly above the First PCI-e slot, where the video card is, is the one that has the lanes directly to the CPU, where I would think your Media drive would be.

Just a question on video card selection. Why the RTX 2060 Super, and not the slightly newer 5700/5700XT? More your thoughts on that as to why, and not wanting to start any Fan Boy Flaming Session! Cost, Performance, Plain Preference, Reliability, etc.? I have one machine with an RTX 2070 Founder's Edition (non super), and the other two computers using Radeon VII. All three platforms are X399: 2950X, 2920X, 1950X (has the 2070). Running either Vegas Pro or Vegas Movie Studio Platinum (version 17 for both), with the 1950X relegated to Movie Studio Platinum 16.

But, can't wait to see how it turns out and give us some performance scoop! Who knows, maybe you and Grazie (with his new little beasty machine) can get together and "Drag Race" each other!

All good points Chief24 .. I'm just starting out .. I'd want a cooler of some type and large PS for sure. My current build stays really cool (using liquid Corsair H100i .. This would be my first AMD build ever! ... No doubt the hardest choice is graphic cards .. hopefully something that works best with Vegas ... looking for a build video on YouTube to follow .. it's been 7 years since my last build ... a bit rusty ..

That is a great cooler for sure. Have used that particular one in the past. Even though it uses Two (2) x 120MM fans, it is quite capable, even for that processor you plan to use.

And you are right. May need to view some YouTube videos on building a computer, and even the old ones are still very relevant. Just stay away from the ones that are like 20 Minutes or less - they do WAY TOO MUCH Timelapsing! Heck, if you go to the "Tutorials" above, even Derek Moran (MovieStudioZen - a.k.a. Dr. Zen), has an old build video from his Intel i7-3770K (think that is the one, or possibly even the Sandy Bridge i7-2600K!). That build video is still relevant today, as far as parts and pieces going together, and he even does a follow-up on Windows installation (believe it was Windows 7, but I think he also has an update for that as well, though it may only be written). There really isn't much difference on building an Intel or AMD Mainstream computer these days. Only when you get to the High End Desktops (HEDT) like X299 (Intel) or X399 (AMD).

A couple more quick tips though. You can go to the Asus website, go to the support section for the board you want, and go to the page for Memory QVL. Take your time searching through that PDF, and get Memory listed on that QVL - it will save you a lot of HeadAches!!!!!

Also, if you do plan to use another AIO like your Corsair H100i, really pay attention to build videos that use that case you have listed. Especially with the newer Intel and AMD motherboards, the Heat Sinks for the power delivery system are much larger, and there is "limited room" up top for the AIO. Especially if you have slightly large hands/fingers. I have two Fractal Define R6 cases, and even with using Air coolers in them, "maneuverability" to insert the power or case/cpu fans was not quite as easy as imagined.

Agree with @Chief24 on the gpu, particularly if you want to keep power draw and price down. For power I use evga 850's in all my builds. Though I might bump up to 1,000 next time to have an option for an rtx3090. I love FractalDesign cases because they're configurable without a hacksaw. Though my preference is the Define R6 USB-C... it's got a swinging door on the front that exposes a drive bay and a ton of acoustic damping on the door and side panels. Did a facebook photo spread on my last build which used an Asus/Intel motherboard, but the considerations for your config would be similar.

Howard-Vigorita wrote on 10/4/2020, 1:51 PM

@xberk Just did a quick check of the Asus Memory QVL for 3d Gen Ryzen CPUs ... I think that's the right list. I don't see the memory you have in mind listed there. Plenty of choices for 4*16 (fastest being 3200) but none for 2*32. If your heart is set on 3600 ram, consider a 32mg system using 4*8. In any case, I think you're better off spreading your memory across more sockets anyway. Better cooling, timing, and lower price. Keep in mind that if you want to bump up to 128gb later, a matched set would be recommended so you'd want to replace it all anyway.

I can see this is going to take some research to get it right .. and maybe some comprise on my part. Budget is $3000 ..

@adis-a3097 .. I'm not likely to be an early adopter for Ryzen 5000 ..

@Howard-Vigorita .. Fractal design cases look good as I want to use about 5 or 6 old HDD (mostly WD 7200rpm) inside along with at least one, possibly two drive caddies and one optical drive ... so how do I get 9 sata ports out of a motherboard that only has 6 ??

I found this build list in a review of a Fractal case:

@xberk the build you list with Fractal is close to what I have. But I am using a Phanteks P400 RGB (i'd go for the Elite for more "space") because of it's excellent air flow. One of the best. And yes, I am using the stock cooler with the 3900X. I have a couple of AIO's sitting on the side for this build, but for the last 11 months, I've had no need to put one in. The stock cooler running stock CPU settings for what "I" do is ok. Maybe one day, I'll install the AIO....

@Reyfox .. Thanks. Stock cooler likely will be good enough for what I do. But it seems so easy to install the Fractal Liquid Cooler in a Fractal case that I am tempted just to do it if I get the Fractal case .. problem there is the I'd like to install a Optical drive (DVD) and at least a drive caddy. I have lots of stuff archived on 3.5" drives. Currently looking at what's out there for USB docking stations to work around the lack of 5.25" bays in cases these days.

For "me", air flow in the case was important. Especially since the GPU I have heats up the case along with the CPU stock cooler. That was the reason for going with the P400 RGB. Now, I would go for the P500 RGB. Gamers Nexus youtube channel gives the "whys" for airflow and compares cases.

And yes, 5.25" bays are like hen's teeth and optical drive bays. So I got a USB 3.0 docking station too.

@xberk

I'm using the Fractal R6 USB-C, like you have listed, in two builds. There is only "One" 5.25" bay, same with the newer R7. But, the newer XL version of the R7, does have two, and supposedly, a "crap-load" of 3.5" trays! If you stick with the R6/R7, you could always just buy an external CD/DVD/Blu-Ray burner, via USB 3.0, and use the case drive bay for your caddy.

Note also, that if you have one or two SSD's, there are two slots on the back of the Motherboard tray, where you can install them, instead of using up the precious 3.5" trays. That is what I am using for one of the builds, with two SSD's (typical 2.5" guys of SATA III variety - not PCI-e).

If you need additional SATA ports, you can always check NewEgg/Amazon for an PCI Add-on card, Here is an example page from NewEgg. Make sure you read the manual so you plug the card into a slot that will not "De-Activate" different components. This is one of the compromises with the Intel/AMD mainstream boards compared to their "Big Brother" HEDT counter-parts.

As far as cooling for the case, the R6 came with Two Front 140MM fans, and one Rear, and your chosen motherboard of choice should be able to handle the Control for them, though the case also has a Fan Control Hub (I prefer to have the motherboard do the job - so I re-routed the cables accordingly.) If you do choose to use the motherboard fan connections, check the PDF for the motherboard, and you can "Guess-ti-mate" if you will need an extension for the fan power cable.

And yes, I do like my R6 cases. Have used the previous R4 and R5 versions as well. They are meant for a workstation environment...plus, don't have as much of the RGB craze with them! The XL versions of the cases just provide some extra "Head Room" for working and I believe an extra External Bays and internal Drive Storage.

Oh, and yes this is a bit of a process to undergo. But you are doing the Important part now, the planning phase. Not to say the building is a "Piece of Cake", but the more you can pre-plan for the components and know what you want to do overall, it will help TREMENDOUSLY in the long run! Just take your time when you start building, and expect to have the "unexpected" pop-up. Mr. Murphy has shown himself in all of my builds!

@Chief24 .. Good advice .. I like the idea of an up-to-date case like the Fractal Define 7 .. it looks like a build would be Sooooo easy with all that room.... it has the advantage too of a very easy install for the Liquid cooler (which is likely overkill for the 3900x but not if I get the 3950x, which interests me at this point) So the only drawback is the lack of 5.25" bays .. can I work around this? Yes .. I'd use the one 5.25" bay for my optical drive (DVD) and, to start, I'd use my Fideco 2 port USB 3.0 docking station .. if needed, I can add a second docking station .. I probably will add a PCIe sata port card too for extra SATA ports. .. taking my time as advised ..

so @Reyfox .. which 3.0 USB docking station are you using? Happy with it?

I’m using an AMD Ryzen 9 3950x as a placeholder until October 8. I plan to build in Q1, 2021.

Howard-Vigorita@ ..

I found this memory Howard .. it seems to be on the List from Asus for the ROG CROSSHAIR VIII SERIES MEMORY QVL .. Isn't this 3600? This gets so confusing as I've seen others, beside you, saying this Asus board will not do 3600 for Ram.

It's highest compatible ram speed is 3200, but motherboards also list official overclocked compatible memory speeds, your board lists speeds up to 4000, and lists 3600. I havent' read into this overclocked stuff, but the AMD X570 standard may list 3200 as highest compatible, but manufacturers improve or at least test their boards to make certain they're capable of the higher speeds.

That being said, you should take note of what people are saying in forums etc, just make sure it's current info and not wildly out of date, as their would have been numerous bios updates

More for "FYI" than anything: DDR4 OFFICIAL Top Speed is 2666 MHz (or MT/s), slightly up from the original of 2133. So, any speed, by any Manufacturer, above either, is according to JEDEC - Overclocked (that due to the particular motherboard/chipset and its release date).

To make matters even more "Interesting", take the AMD/Intel Mainstream boards that have Four (4) DIMM slots. Basically they are "Dual-Channel", with One DIMM (DRAM Module) per Channel, allowing for a Second DIMM to be added for the "Dual-Channel". All the boards would support this, even if they only have Two total DIMM slots, like the smaller ITX form factor boards, or some Micro ATX boards. Most of the Mid to High End boards have a total of Four DIMM slots, but is still only "Dual-Channel", and allows for two more DIMMs' to be added to increase Memory Capacity. Problem is, since both Intel and AMD have the Memory Controller as part of the actual CPU Die, this now "slows down" the effective Speed for a "Full" complement of RAM.

Basically, the CPU will throttle, or just not even allow the system to Boot, if the Controller cannot handle the memory installed. So, you really have to be careful when choosing your memory, especially when wanting to "Populate" all the slots for that capacity, and desired speed. Oh, and those running the HEDT platforms have the same problem. I would not be surprised that some of the issues we see in the Forum about "Crashes", "Won't Start", "Blue/Black Screens", etc., are because the User's have "Exceeded" what the CPU Memory Controller can handle.

This is not native to Intel, or AMD, but both companies. From all the research and viewing of testing I have seen, the Ryzen platform runs perfectly fine with Memory at a 2933 speed, with four DIMM slots populated, in pretty much any capacity. If you win the "Silicon Lottery" as they say, you may be able to push it to 3200/3400 or further, but that is rare. And for Video/Audio Editors, stability is much more appreciated, and getting that "Master-Piece" out the door!
