New Poll-----Who Actually Bought the Upgrade

"p.s. I find the "Stack Traxx" at digital juice 100000% better than cinescore sounds, so I'm sticking w/DJ for all my audio backgrounds. They truly rock."

The one thing about Digital Juice is that they do everything first class. IMO, If Sony wants to be in the content business they should adopt the same philosophy. That silly vision series doesn't hole a candle to the Digital Juice jump backs. Most of the vision series makes me think it was done in something like Ulead Cool 3D rather than a more advanced program like Maya, Lightwave, 3D Studio Max, Cinema 4D, Softimage XSI, etc. Either that or they were only give a couple days to build each clip.

On the other hand the ACID library is pretty decent stuff. Mostly.

I always upgrade but have not decided on Cinescore so I am waiting a few days to decide. I have several Stack Traxx and the DJ Sound fx.

Update: I just bought V7 and Cinescore. 9/24/06 full package to be delivered. Too good of a deal.

I'm about to get V7+DVDA4 as soon as I can decide whether to get Cinescore also.

I found a PC here that will play all the samples on the Cinescore page her, but didn't hear anything suitable for my needs.

The other two themes that are bundled may be more in line with what I need, but for some obscure, inane reason, they don't seem to have any samples from these, or even any information at all beyond the names of the two themes as I recall.

What do you buyers think?
zcus wrote on 9/16/2006, 8:04 PM
No Way!!!

I'd buy DVDA if I could but Vegas 7? Nothing there? Why is everybody raving about snapping??? This just pisses me off - It's the first thing that is put into a video application - but the vegas programmers are getting to "it's about the way we do it" and not looking at the most common sence video editor tasks. Snapping and decent titling should have been introduced in version 2 at the latest 3!

PLEASE GIVE US A TEXT EDITOR!!!!!!!!! Listen to your consumers.

What do you mean? All the themes are represented by samples for your review. Do you mean the two other theme packs? Anyway there all there:

But, maybe I just don't understand your statement.

Well it seems through very good pricing (throwing the Cinescore package in) about 70% who have answered this poll upgraded. I get the sense that it isn't Vegas 7 that is so attractive but it is the pricing and the throw in of Cinescore and the two free themes. By the way, I posted this over in the Cinescore forum but didn't get a meaningful answer. If Cinescore doesn't sell well, will that affect the frequency of issuing new themes. I don't really like what I have heard so far and really do need orchestral and classical music for my work. Any idea?
Coursedesign wrote on 9/16/2006, 8:50 PM
David,

I meant "Theme Packs."

I went to the last link you gave, which is the main page for Cinescore. This let me find the audio samples for all included themes.

Perhaps I'm too underslept, but I could not find any way to get to the other two Cinescore pages (spid=409 and 410) without copying the URLs from your post.

Is there an obvious link somewhere to the additional Theme Pack pages? I couldn't find it on the main Cinescore page where it would have been a natural.

Did everybody else find this link easily, or is the sales prevention department now celebrating their sales prevention quota met for this week?

(I could get the Theme Packs into my shopping cart, but without any audio samples or even a description of them I did what most prospective customers do in this situation: Abandon cart! Abandon cart!)

Just to clarify, you do realize that Vegas already had snapping, right?

Under the Sony logo at the top of this page is a menu. Go to Content and choose Cinescore Theme Packs.

The new snapping to events on other tracks is very nice, but its true that many editors have had this for a while - I remember it in Premiere getting on for 10 years ago.

I upgraded the day of the release :)

The updates were well worth it to me.

I also upgraded the Sony+DVD package *and* Cinescore, even though I already have two copies. (Now three). I wanted the new themepacks and the upgrade was cheaper than the two themepacks at B&H.

My motivation was the new features in DVDA, and that I just bought a Z1 to replace my PD-150, so the HDV editing in V7 is a plus.

It's going to be sad to not use Scenalyzer any longer. It's been a rock-solid, underpriced program that just always worked.

Steve

PS - Anyone heard from JohnMeyer lately?

Aaah!

...or should I say Aaaarrrggghh!?

How very incredibly stupid of me as a new prospective customer, not familiar with the completely new Cinescore product, to think that the additional Theme Packs available would be if not linked from the software product page, at least mentioned that they were listed under the Content tab, off off and away from the Cinescore page. DOH!

Is there an address where I can send an engraved award to be handed over to Sony Madison's FY 2006 #1 Sales Prevention Contributor at their next Sales Kickoff meeting?

I'd suggest that it go with a special commendation for the combination of well hidden extra revenueTheme Packs, a barebones product description, lack of at least a few short video gallery examples using Cinescore, and the final kicker: an excellent launch promotion that is a total secret to anybody who didn't attend IBC or visit this forum or hear it from a friend.

Sony Madison will always be small if they don't learn how to make a big impression. Advertising agencies are useless for this, because nearly always they write copy to get awards for themselves, not to sell product.

It takes a good independent copywriter with real talent to do it right. With those words (and sometimes pictures to go with them), it is possible to get phenomenal results from a very small advertising budget.

Most companies use traditional advertising agencies to write ads, so they all look the same.

With a fresh approach to copywriting, Sony Madison's ads could really stand out from this generic magazine page Muzak.

The new ads should quickly explain the difference - why Vegas is better than the rest - in relatively few words, in a credible way.

Not a bullet list of features, not a list of benefits.

I believe that a combination of "product essence described" and "story telling" could double sales every year for many years to come.

This is an approach I have used many times before, to boost excellent but unknown products.

After first trying with America's most famous ad agencies, I threw them out and wrote new ones that were flamed by the decorated agency hotshots as being "wrooong."

These ads sold tens of millions of dollars of product; in one case we went from zero to #1 worldwide in 4 years per IDC, and it was all one creative ad concept that made it possible. In another case we took the leadership in only 2 years in a slightly more narrow software niche.)

Vegas has many strengths, as we all know here, but very few outsiders know what those strengths are.

The current generation of Vegas ads look quite nice and they are much better than in the past, but they don't convey the full power and the "God-this-is-nice-to-work-with" feeling of Vegas by a long shot.

great points, Coursedesign... you're right on the money with your ad/copy tips.. (I run copywritinguniversity.com too btw, big fan of direct-response copy vs madison avenue bs)... right re bullet points and "reasons why" copy are needed to pitch the upgrade...

and re sounds.. really all I've needed, with the exception of maybe 6 loops I've bought from other vendors, are found in digital juice's StackTraxx products... they're world class, like all of DJ's stuff... and they are "hyper-responsive" to customer needs... heck even their CEO is in their support forums daily to answer questions... Wows me.

I hope Sony gets a clue and learns how to "wow" their customers by overdelivering. Sony, go study DJ carefully.

Here's the forum link, where they're constantly asking customers for their input and responding within weeks, with new products:

http://www.digitaljuice.com/community_forums/

They get a "world class A+++" rating for how to do business. All of us, Sony included, would do well to study how they run their business. Just don't buy them out Sony, I like DJ the way they are.

Back to Sony... hmm I don't like just grumbling, without providing feedback and solutions... whining doesn't help matters. But I am really at a loss as to how to "get Sony to listen up and take action", as we've been asking for solutions for years on this forum, most of which are largely ignored by the dev team. Thoughts?

This poll isn't complete unless we have information about how the contributer uses Vegas. For instance, I am an animator working on a HD feature film for theatrical release. What some call cosmetic improvements here amount to important, thus quite worth the money improvements for me, such as the new docking system and the choice of having the clip play on both screens simultaneously.

It makes a huge difference to me that I can keep my timeline at the bottom of my screens and the image windo at the top and YAY!, smaller. I spend around 12-16 hours a day infont of my computer and such choices show as the degree of physical stress I may feel or avoid feeling at the end of the day.

I am thrilled with the way I can toggle between my Graphics application (Mirage from Bauhaus) and Vegas seemlessly. The file management is intuitively organized for large projects. A small but important feature to me is the "Dim Output Button" since I often work in the wee hours of the night. And the improved playback of HD clips is all I needed to dish out $150 -- the price of one night at the movies and a dinner for two. My enthusiasm might also be explained by my switching to Vegas just recently from DPS Velocity...

Wedding videographers must have a different line of expectations and demands than a TV spot maker would, or a general editing house services provider, a church events recorder etc. Only from an animator's (2D) point of view I can report that I am thrilled!

???

Why did I as a prospective customer have to get lucky in getting your help on this forum to find the link that ***SONY*** should have put on the Cinescore page?

Shouldn't a Cinescore product page mention somewhere that there are more Theme Packs available for it in a different location generically named "Content".

I don't think that is obvious in any way whatsoever, and I am totally baffled why you felt insulted, if that is indeed what happened?

Well, now I'm official. Upgraded to Vegas+DVD + Cinescore.

Tulip. I'm just wondering, at what resolution you are editing that feature film?

Jayster wrote on 9/17/2006, 11:10 AM
I installed the trial and intend to buy the upgrade soon. But I have only dabbled with it because I've read so much about problems with the way Vegas 7 uses Cineform DI's. I work primarily with these CFDI's and don't want to deal with crashes (which apparently are now resolved) and slower playback (which is not solved yet). I am hoping it'll all be resolved soon, but won't start any major projects with Vegas 7 until that happens.

Unless I can start a project with .m2ts and than later do a simple "replace media" with CFDIs, well if I can't do that then the V7 trial will be a playback toy for .m2t's and not much more...

Coursedesign,

Perhaps the TWO Cinescore theme packs were so well hidden at Sonymedia's website so as to preclude any possible confusion when reviewing Safe Harbor's listing for FOUR Sony theme packs including "Kinetic Tracks" & " Ideal Vacation"
