New system i9-11900 with RTX 3080 all is well.

xberk wrote on 9/26/2021, 12:12 PM

I'm not running any official speed tests yet .. but WOW .. my new 11900 system is running Vegas 19 with ease. Smooth .. full frame rates .. I'm over the moon! The first thing I tried was Boris Primatte Studio Chroma Key .. no sweat .. full frame rate. This was with the video tab set to UHD Graphics 750 !!! .. Then I added Vegas Denoise .. frame rate slipped to about half ... I switched to the RTX 3080 graphics (Nvidia) and I'm back to full frame rate.

So far so good.

@Photo_G .. Ideal build? .. Maybe for about a month or two .. But it's always that way it seems .. So far I'm very pleased and glad I did it now. I still wish I could have built my own .. This was really the only way for me to get the RTX 3080 .. And that's the center of discussion for Vegas .. Is that RTX 3080 worth it? I'm only vaguely familiar with the RED CAR test thing ?? Is that what I'd want for testing?

@Grazie .. Thanks .. I updated my signature and YES this is FUN .. I love how smooth and quick things are .. but the best is how I can apply FX without having playback stutter .. I've been working with Chroma Key using Primatte Studio and this new machine handles it easily .. full frame rate playback .. love it .. I have just begun!

@Grazie . I have a ton of old Super 8 transfers that I scanned on my RetroScan machine. I used Neat Video on that but it was so slowwwww I didn't get very far with that project ... I may want to try that when I get the time ... I think I need to upgrade the NV to 5.0 version, right? I assume you got the latest NV to work with VP19 ?

Nice. Integrators do seem to be the only affordable sources of 3080's stateside... but you seem to have specified and gotten the parts you wanted. Suggest you bench with both Sample Project and Red Car which focus on different gpu and Vegas media capabilities.

@xberk I have used a Retroscan with my 11700K & the 11700K runs the (single-core) proprietary software better than my 9900K, likely because the 11xxx series has more Instructions Per Cycle (IPC)... However, if I have a lot of film to transfer, I move the source files across my 10G network so my 9900K can process them while I keep using the 11700K for the next group of reels...

When film projects require grain reduction, I do not use the Retroscan grain reduction.... Rather, I use NEAT 4.8.7 which is optimized for my AMD VEGA GPUs, but not the latest Nvidia 3xxx & AMD 6xxx GPUs... I just let it run a batch of files on a 2nd system so it does not get in the way of my other work... I have not upgraded to NEAT 5 but may if I get a enough work and/or upgrade to a newer GPU... I actually use Mercalli stand-alone more than NEAT if I get some jumpy films...

I have considered getting a Nvidia 3080 or AMD 6900XT for other Apps, but they do not make as much difference in Vegas as they do in other Apps...

@TheRhino - Sounds like you’ve got it figured out. Your setup is very businesslike indeed. OTOH, I was fortunate to have had that insurance cover that meant that my Rig collapse just as the RTX3080s were coming to major builders, this and the other upgrades I got at the same time made me prime candidate to having a single Box to everything. @xberk is going to and IS getting some awesome processing numbers along with sustained Framerates.

@xberk - Now investigate Wayne’s Happy Otter Scripts. I use the Take Render function all the time. I’ve got it bound to MagixYUV so the render times are ber-listering 😀!

I'm glad that you finally got the computer build and are enjoying it. And as others have pointed out, the only way to get a good GPU is by using reliable system integrators. I've been building PC's since the early '90's, and really don't need a new one yet. So I am waiting to see what Adler Lake brings to the table with it's iGPU.

Enjoy and happy editing!

@Reyfox .. The buzz on the Adler Lake is that it is faster than AMD 5950 .. who knows .. the iGPU (UHD 750) on my 11900 runs Vegas 19 with Primatte Studio Chroma key at full frame rate -- Off course, I get full frame rate when using Primatte when GPU is OFF too. But if I add Vegas Denoise FX on top of the Primatte Chroma Key, then the UHD 750 runs it at about 6 or 7 frames, but the RX 3080 runs it full frame rate ... Not exactly a bench test, but in the real world that was what I was looking for out of the RTX 3080.

@xberk the buzz for Alder is for single thread and it will cost you over $200 more to get it over the 5950X. But we will see. Here in Poland, anything with an integrated graphics is way overpriced too. I guess I will be waiting longer to upgrade anything.

Thanks for the updates on the computer. Glad to hear you are happy and it's performing!

The buzz on the Adler Lake is that it is faster than AMD 5950...

Yes & Windows 11 has a redesigned thread scheduler to maximize Alder Lake's architecture so hopefully demanding Apps, like NLEs, will get the resources they need to perform better on multi-core CPUs... I got my 11700K for $350 & motherboard with built-in TB3 & 10G networking for $200 knowing that I might upgrade to Alder Lake if it's worthwhile... If I find the components I want, it only takes me a few hours to upgrade because all of my storage is on hardware PCIe cards so I'm back to editing as soon as I reinstall Windows & Vegas...

That said, I got my 9900K combo in early 2019 just before the expected launch of the 5950X because I had a ton of 4K editing deadlines to meet... Then the 5950X launch was delayed, then there was a shortage, and then for an $800 CPU it didn't really run Vegas any better than my overclocked $500 9900K running on a $200 motherboard... In the end my 9900K was one of the best CPUs for Vegas until the release of the 11xxx series, which is only slightly better...

I guess we'll know soon.... Techgage is usually a good place to look for Vegas benchmarks on new hardware...

While I'm not stoked about Alder Lake, the architectural changes are fascinating for a system that will be used four to five years into the future. DDR5, PCIe 4, and the aforementioned scheduler and on and on. Never think I'm naive enough to think that the first release of DDR5 will exploit all the capabilities of the architecture or that PCIe 4 will solve any current problem that I have, but when I built my last system, it had USB-C ports. At the time I had no USB-C devices. Now, I do.

Q1 of 2022 may be a good time for me to build a new primary workstation which was due in January of 2021 so Alder Lake should be a known quantity by then. Lately, I've been thinking it might be a good idea to replace this twelve year old Q9450 system that I'm using to type this. Maybe a good 11700K would be a good move in that it would give me a place to fall back to.

I considered updating my i7-3770k system, but, it's doing an admirable job as a media server. IIABDFI

Besides, I have two more boxes of negatives to scan so my time is committed for the rest of the year.

Howard-Vigorita wrote on 9/28/2021, 8:12 PM

I think most of the Alder Lake talk flows from the leak posted into the Puget Systems database of their benchmark run on a beta Z690 mobo with 64 gb of ddr5/4800 and a 3090 gpu under Win10. Edged out 11900k in most categories (except the igpu) though not by as much as expected with limited turbo boost across all cores. Expected to do much better with Win11's new thread scheduler but that probably applies to all high core-count cpus like those from amd. Tom's Hardware covered it pretty well here. And here's another one they did that I think is more interesting (and confusing) on the Z690 chipset.

Reyfox wrote on 9/29/2021, 9:05 AM

I'm personally not in a rush to build, but consider something with an iGPU this time. But prices for those CPU's are a little on the "insane" side here in Europe. AMD's are out of stock and the Intel's are way overpriced.

When Adler Lake arrives, I'll wait for the reviews and see what motherboards are out there, along seeing how much DDR5 is going to cost. This won't be an inexpensive build for sure.
