Nikon N-Raw format

Angelo-Angeralides wrote on 1/1/2024, 7:45 AM

Hi all,

I just bought the Nikon Z8 and I'm using Vegas Pro Post 365 and was shocked that it could not accept N-Raw files.

I tried Davinci and premier pro demos and they both accept it. Though I have been using Vegas for more than 12 year I could not just change to something else right now.

Does anyone using N-Raw have a solution to be able to make a work around to edit N-raw on Vegas?

Thanks in advance!

  1. I'm sure support will come in an update. N-Raw is a relatively new format.
  2. Put the words [Feature Request] in the title of your thread, so it will attract the right attention.
  3. If I understand correctly, N-Raw is 8k 60p. How would you plan to deliver such a format?

Thanks for the advice.

N-Raw can be used in different resolution, down to 4K 25p in the setting menu on Nikon Z8.

My plan is to shoot in 4K 50 and 100fps and render the final project in either 4K 25p or 1080p 25p.

I could have used Pro-Res but Nikon Z8 does not support 4K 100fps on that format except with N-Raw.

The files are so big with Pro-res and N-raw so I might stick to H.265 10bit for now. The only downside with 4K 10bit H.265 is that my computer is lagging as soon as I use color grading and put some effects.

ProRes is probably your best bet if you can beef up your media storage capacity. I use a cf/m.2 sata-ssd adapter with one of my cameras... should get about an hour per tb with prores hq.

Yes I need a bigger CF express card too, maybe I'll go with 1TB. I just hope that Pro-res HQ is worth it in quality color grading vs H.265 10bit. Pro Res Raw still won't work on Vegas.

I would not expect a fast support for N-raw, since we still have not a great workflow for BRAW up to now. Sorry to say so, but that is what I observe in the last two years.

I agree that ProRes would be a good choice for Vegas. HEVC 10bit could be a good choice, if you have a modern i-GPU for the decoding in your processor. Without i-GPU H.264 would be the better choice for Vegas in most systems, compared with HEVC.
