No Option to Put Timeline Display at Top in Vegas 23

DANIEL-LICHT wrote on 9/9/2025, 11:26 AM

Been using Vegas for about 20 years. Started with the timeline at the top so been doing that ever since. In every new version of Vegas I could go to Options > Preferences > Display and configure to have the timeline at the top. Now in Vegas 23 that option is no longer available (at least I can't find it) forcing me to have the timeline at the bottom. I know, not a big deal, but how can I get the timeline at the top in V23? (Might stick with V22 just because of that but V23 is definitely faster.)

That option was removed because you can now dock any window below the timeline. New docking areas are available below, to the left and to the right of the timeline. Currently we do not have a layout which has all the default windows at the bottom, but you can manually move all the windows and then save that layout.

Thanks. Not as simple as the old method but after a few minutes I got it looking the way I wanted. Cheers.

OK, it was driving me crazy and I can't figure out how to move the other windows such as below the timeline. The preferences aren't that clear to do that for me. I tried the control key and such but can't move the other windows. Nothing that I figure out anyway.

Well, can't make the layout work to be useable like previous versions. HORRIBLE decision.

@GaryAshorn i tried to make you a little tutorial. i hope this helps! The undocking process is identical to previous versions, the only real change is that you can dock them where ever you want now! Good luck!

@GaryAshorn In addition to what chell has indicated, to undock a window you have to click the title bar and drag it up or down, its does not work correctly if you move it to the sides. Here's another video from the default layout to one with the timeline up and the other windows down:

We will look into creating a new pre-installed layout that has the timeline on top and the default docked windows in the bottom docking area. This will make life a little easier for those who previously used that timeline location preference.

Never tried Tracks On Top before but had no problem in vp23 just grabbing each of the tabs and dragging them to the bottom until all that was left over were the tracks on top. This is my usual layout, up side down:

I appreciate the small videos you made and making it work. I played more last night.... well...A LOT. finally figured out FIRST I have to click and move each individual tab by clicking ON THE TAB. I started moving them to the bottom but got late and had issue getting them ALL to the bottom. I will play more this week. The one video showed how I have run VEGAS since VERSION 2.... YES, switched back in the late 90s from the FAST VM/DPR video editing system to VEGAS 2 and have upgraded to every version since. I am not new to this, old and stubborn true. I miss frame accurate editing on the fly with my old FAST system. New digital systems are not as fast as frame accurate editing on somethings. Punch a 2 frame file into the tape system on the fly and never miss a beat or have to RE-RENDER. Done in 10 seconds, but today that ain't the way, I get it. I will work on my layout and maybe, just maybe as noted above, we may get a set timeline on top display. Thank to everyone.

For what it's worth, I dont use the docking feature at all. I use custom window layouts which are all undocked floating windows, selected on function keys. So I'm really pleased to see the new floating window for colour grading, thanks for that. eg. my colour grading has a largish monitor, scopes, grading of course and no audio mixing whereas Audio Mixing has no scopes, a small monitor and a large space given to the mixer. I know Vegas is supposed to 'modeless' but I find this is much easier than using tabs.
Isn't it great that all these option are available!

@paul-marshall Well said! 👍

I'm happy with the flexibility in this new version.
My second screen remains only for judging color details other than the small preview window.
Too much elements in a UI call chaos of management.
