On Screen Text size for this program

eugey wrote on 5/26/2023, 11:51 PM

I am running 2 x 43 inch 4K monitors and have just cancelled my Adobe Premiere Pro subscription in favour of purchaseng this version of Vegas Pro 20.0 only to hit a problem. With these 4K monitors the menus and text/instructions etc in this program are too small to see properly. I have researched Dr Google and so far have not found any answer as to how this might be done. Can you assist please.

Try 'Override DPI' setting in the 'Properties> Compatibility' of the VP <.exe> file or shortcut to it.
Otherwise you can change the PC's DPI settings for the timeline monitor, but this is usually global for everything on that monitor. Some versions of VP have an 'experimental' high DPI setting in "Options> Preferences> Display", but I could not see any change on my Win 10 laptop w/ VP-16 which has a 4k monitor. I ended up changing the PCs display DPI so my old less-than-perfect eyes can see the text and pin-head size toolbar icons.

Thank you. Makes me a little mad ..because - as you say- everything else gets amplified as well. It does not give me confidence in the program much...might finish up back with Premiere...wil have to see how it goes

@eugey
May I ask why you didn't try Vegas Pro with the free trial before you bought it?

@eugey

I'm over 25 years old now and I just went through a similar situation with new monitor selection.

I was using a 24" 1920x1200 display which, by definition, has pixel pitch of 0.2692 mm.

Reference: Pixel Pitch Calculator Link

I was not unhappy with the text size at 100% scaling in Windows Display Settings, but I wanted a monitor with more screen real estate for more timeline and larger preview on Vegas Pro main screen.

At first, I selected a 27" monitor with the understanding that the text would be smaller than I was accustomed to at the native resolution of the monitor and default Windows and Vegas Pro settings. This is purely a function of the Dot Pitch mechanics of the monitor. I figured I'd give 125% font scaling in Windows Display Settings a try. I was unhappy with the results, not just because of Vegas Pro, but because I share this monitor with another system.

Study this graphic:

Ultimately, I returned the 27" monitor and bought a 31.5" monitor which has a similar Dot Pitch to my original 24" display.

With all that said, I'd start with changing Windows Display Settings to Scale at 125%.

You also have the option of setting a custom scaling factor in Windows.

If you are "a senior citizen - near 80 y.o." a little larger equivalent Dot Pitch might come in handy. Let's us know about your experiences.

PS

I obviously have not cracked the code on Use High DPI scaling (where available) as I can see no meaningful difference for the default settings that I use.

High DPI scaling On

High DPI scaling Off

Even though Vegas Pro 20-403 sees a difference if you put two screenshots back on the timeline on two stacked tracks and set the Composite Mode to Difference.

@eugey Hi, I've a Dell SE3223Q 31.5 Inch 4K UHD (3840x2160) monitor, the lettering/text is a good size for me but it is about as small as i can deal with, luckily my eyesight is still pretty good ,

Here's mine, I believe @john_dennis is the same size as mine 🤭

I've a 43" tv over the other side of the room so i can imagine the size but it's a tv, I'm not going to try plug my PC into it but out of curiousity would you share a full screen capture of Vegas on a 43" monitor? pls.
