"If BluRay is already in the lead, it seems to me that if they just add a couple of entry-level players priced at $199 or less, they'll nip HDDVD in the bud."

The sounds of desperation.

The fact is that Sony has some big problems with dropping prices. They drop too far and they start hurting their partners (pioneer, samsung... etc). If that happens... the partners will more than likely hit the highway. Toshiba doesn't have this problem.

John, although it's not scientific, the fact is that product naming is critical to success. That's why I've sold millions of my videos, eg the copywriting (I run copywritinguniversity.com and sellinguniversity.com) and other online success, because I know what sells.

And in my humble opinion, your average customer won't like the name/brand of "blue ray", it sounds like some science fiction gadget from star trek, not a video format.

As in...
"Captain, watch out - it's the new Romulan "Blue Ray" of Death approaching fast at warp 9!". Dammit Jim I'm a doctor not a Blue Ray of Death healer! "Men, men, don't worry, that "Blue Ray" can't get past our shields. Quick, Spock... activate the new HD-DVD shield generator". Aye but Capn I can't hold 'er together anymore.. etc..

HD-DVD is perfectly named, it says high def dvd ... so that naming convention alone makes a difference. Much like the titles for books, or movies... the naming is critical to success. "blue ray" is a dumb name for media, in my professional opinion. But then heck what do I know, I've only sold a few million personally, maybe I'm wrong... (?). sounds like it belongs in the obscurity bargain bin along with "laser disc" and other losing formats...

And remember, the technical merits are often meaningless, eg Beta was a much better format than VHS, higher-res, instant on (I had a toshiba v5310T betamax, loved it).. but vhs won (if rumors are correct?) because the adult industry went with it. and for the extra hour... but beta was better technically than vhs...

KC is pretty much on the money. Remember this: "Marketing beats engineering every time." Why? Because marketing focuses on what people will buy rather than what can be done.

Here's another one: "Any technological feature for which the customer is unwilling to pay, ceases to become a competitive advantage."

But also remember, sale price is not solely determined from "cost" but rather customer's willingness to pay. If Joe BlueCollar is willing to fork over $29.99 for The Three Hundred, I would be surprised if WalMart will gives him much of a break to buy it on HD-DVD rather than BD.
