Any reason to finish this one functional project before making a change like that?

No problem with saved projects in former build of the same program

@Gator The fact that your VMS14 opens and then has problems with media makes me wonder if it's a Windows Permissions problem? Have their been any major changes to your pc lately?

Gator wrote on 1/30/2023, 10:20 PM

@EricLNZ There have certainly been windows/Microsoft updates here and there over the last year/4 months...I still have 1 project running well, all the others I have checked seem to have the same issue of failing to load then crashing. The only "new" thing I've done regarding editing is incorporate some 4k video from my new (Dec 2021) smartphone whereas prior I only used Olympus and gopro media. I only use this laptop for editing, storing/organizing media files, and some minor web browsing.

EricLNZ wrote on 1/31/2023, 2:24 AM

@Gator VMS14 is a few years old now and I wonder if it cannot handle media from a newer phone. Let's have a look at what's in your camera video file. Post the info from MediaInfo, instructions in this post https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-to-post-mediainfo-and-vegas-pro-file-properties--104561/

Gator wrote on 1/31/2023, 6:53 AM

@EricLNZ I agree. I recall there being glitches in the preview when I first added the 4k media. Of note, I only have 1 project with 4k media and that is the project that continues to function. All others have older gopro and Olympus camera media. I'll check those instructions once I get to a desk. Thank you!

@EricLNZ I also just remembered (and can't believe I forgot!) that I recently completed a VMS project in which I used cell phone footage from about 20 different people. Unsure if there is any significance here but thought I should mention it!

Gator wrote on 2/1/2023, 10:11 PM

If I saved the .vf file and moved all the media to a different hard drive and then re-linked it, do you think that could work? I'm not afraid to put some time into this. At this point re-linking 100-200 files seems trivial. But I'm not sure that would even work. Thoughts? (as I back up everything to SSD to prepare for some major system revisions....)

EricLNZ wrote on 2/4/2023, 6:09 PM

@Gator Apologies for the delay in getting back to this.

Did you try moving the vf file and media to a different drive. Re-linking should be easy assuming the vf file tries to open. VMS will give you the option to browse to the first file it finds missing. If the other files are in the same folder or relative folder position as previously VMS will then find them and tell you, asking if you want to use them. So you shouldn't need to re-link each one.

The MediaInfo on your problem mp4 looks to me normal except the extra audio "Other #1" and "Other #2". #1 mentions Quicktime. I don't know the significance of this as its above my knowledge area.

Gator wrote on 2/7/2023, 3:32 PM

@EricLNZ Hi Eric and thank you again for your reply.  I tried this and was able to get the vf file to open AND not crash.  It still will not load the media however.  It will play, but the preview window remains black, no audio (they are not muted).  I also tried relinking the files but as has been my experience it does not work as you described.  I have to do each one manually.  Also, I found it curious that as I am specifying the replacement files from the source folder, it list the file type as “QuickTime” (they are MP4s) and also says under the “Video” section, “stream attributes could not be determined”.  I have checked that the MovieStudio program is still working, the source media seems fine and plays normally, the computer hardware meets requirements.  Could the problem have something to do with the drivers or plug ins or stupid QuickTime?  I am going to uninstall QuickTime next. I feel so close.  Thank you so so much for helping me.  I haven’t been able to find anyone else and I’ve spent so much time these past few weeks trying to fix this. Thank you!

EricLNZ wrote on 2/7/2023, 4:16 PM

@Gator Upload a short problem mp4 file to Google Drive so we can download and play with it.

Unfortunately I cannot recall what the GPU options were in VMS14 preferences. The problem may lie there.

Gator wrote on 2/7/2023, 8:02 PM

@EricLNZ here is the link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-2pA5pP--TNWj8dfwp03rravynAzZ1dD/view?usp=share_link

Of note, the 2 files that I DID try linking before I gave up had mp4.sfk files created pretty immediately. Also, after the initial move to my external SSD the .vf file would open and was stable, allowing me to play the (blank) timeline as well as make and save edits. After a few hours and one restart it now freezes and crashes like all the other attempts.

EricLNZ wrote on 2/7/2023, 10:12 PM

@Gator Your GOPR8726.MP4 plays okay in my VMS16 Platinum. Right clicking on the clip either on timeline or in Project Media window and selecting Properties shows in the General tab that the Plug-In used is "compoundplug.dll". As far as I know this is the plug-in used for AVC video for many versions back of VMS.

With VMS17 Platinum it also opens with the same plug-in.

  1. Check that you have  C:\Program Files\VEGAS\Movie Studio Platinum 14.0\FileIO Plug-Ins\compoundplug. In that folder should be compoundplug.dll and other files.
  2. Go to Options/Preferences and untick everything in all windows that relates to using GPU, so you are just using CPU for decoding and processing. This will help check whether it's a GPU problem. We don't have any details of your system. What GPU do you have?
  3. Long shot but have you recently downloaded any codec packs such as K-Lite? They have been known to interfere with VMS's internal codecs.
Gator wrote on 2/8/2023, 4:22 PM

@EricLNZ

1) There are 8 items in the compoundplug folder, including compoundplug.dll.  They all say last modified in 2017.

2) Laptop has integrated Intel HD Graphics 620.

I could only find 2 references to GPU in the preferences.  These were in a similar .vf file that was also saved to my desktop.  One was Video: GPU acceleration of video processing: (off) and the other was Preview Device: Optimize GPU Display Performance (I just unchecked this).

3) I do not know what a codec IS so I doubt I have recently downloaded any.

There are a few things which I find curious:

I have certainly considered that this might be a system issue, however I recently completed hours of work on my lone 4K project and rendered several versions of it with no significant performance issues.  (CPU range 20-40%), however when I try to open my problem file, the CPU spikes to 99%.

I found another project on my desktop that is solely GoPro MP4 media and that is still functioning normally.  All this leads me to believe the program is still functioning.  And as you’ve confirmed, the media is working.  And editing the 4K video unremarkably makes me think my system, albeit older, is also adequate.

When I initially moved the vf file and it’s media to my external hard drive, it initially opened and did not crash (despite media being offline).  I was even able to “play” the preview, and even saw a brief flash of red in the preview window!  A mere few hours and one restart later, all the issues (offline media, failing to load, freezing) are back.  I kept the laptop offline throughout this, so no updates were made.

When I first uncovered this issue it would load the project to “13% 55 of 55” and then freeze.  Now it loads to “0% 55 of 55” (perhaps this is because ALL file paths have been disrupted now?).  Each time it suggests linking an offline media file it starts with a different file.  And in the project media window (upper left) it initially (when files were in original location) did show a random amount of the files still “online” despite them not ever playing in the preview window.

Prior to the issue onset, I never saw .sfk files.  Now they are everywhere.  The files I try to relink immediately have the .sfk files.  Is this not odd?

Lastly, the load often gets stuck “loading peaks” for the mp3 song that I use.

I don’t know if any of this holds any significance so please forgive my over sharing of moot details should they be irrelevant.

EricLNZ wrote on 2/8/2023, 4:47 PM

The ".sfk" files are the small files created to show the waveforms on the timeline. "loading peaks" is the opening of these files, or if they don't exist their creation. They can be deleted but they will then get recreated by VMS when a project is opened. They reside in the same folder as the source file they relate to.

Maybe there is a connection here with your problem?

Gator wrote on 2/8/2023, 9:32 PM

@EricLNZ

Perhaps. Although I am increasingly suspicious that it has something to do with quicktime. or a plug in? I did not perform the quicktime uninstall after all..should I?

When the program freezes I see my CPU struggling as attached

EricLNZ wrote on 2/9/2023, 2:21 AM

@Gator You've nothing to lose by uninstalling QT. You can always install it again.

Gator wrote on 2/9/2023, 9:27 AM

Uninstalling Quicktime did not resolve the issue. I got an error message in MS asking me to reinstall quicktime. Not sure why it says my files are "QuickTime files".

EricLNZ wrote on 2/9/2023, 6:51 PM

@Gator MS is possibly saying your mp4 files are QT files because that's what Windows is telling it.

Go into Windows Settings / Apps & Features / Default Apps and select on right "Choose default apps by file type". Scroll down to mp4 and what does it say? If it says QT Player click on it and change to another player such as VLC or Films & TV.

That could also be the reason MS is asking you to reinstall QT.

Out of curiosity I tried opening your GOPR8726.MP4 file with QT Version 7.7.9. It opened but played terribly jerkily. Unwatchable. With MPC-HC, VLC and Films & TV (windows default player) it played perfectly.

Gator wrote on 2/9/2023, 10:47 PM

@EricLNZ mp4 is movies and TV.

A few others such as mpeg video/audio stream files and .dif DVD movie files are listed as QuickTime.

Thoughts?

Fwiw, I have also cleared my cache.

EricLNZ wrote on 2/10/2023, 2:44 AM

A few others such as mpeg video/audio stream files and .dif DVD movie files are listed as QuickTime.

Same here so so that isn't the problem.

Let's clarify - If you open a new empty VMS project and try to add GOPR8726.MP4 to the timeline what happens? And if you get an error message what is it?

Gator wrote on 2/10/2023, 2:47 PM

I added one clip to a new project and it appears to work. I will continue to test to see as I add more clips, maybe mp3s, etc.

I have 1 project left working. 4 older projects not working. These four are saved in different locations. I couldn't explain the difference between the working one and the other 4. The working one is much simpler and had minimal edits made to it.

I have been saving all my error messages. I will list the first here and can add the others if you'd like.
