Radeon vs Geforce

Oh, on the subject of switches for GPU, there's also that swicth in VP13 under Preview Device: "Optimize (sic) GPU display performance".

I would like someone from MAGIX to tell us exactly what that does. All we get in the help file is this:

"Select the Optimize GPU display performance check box for most situations. You can clear the check box if you experience system, external monitor, or video preview performance problems."

OK, bags of room in the case. A 2Gb MSI R7 370 is tempting me with timely delivery and price. Do I really need the extra 2Gb on a 4Gb model, I wonder?

I can see Nick perfectly explained my GTX580 recomendation down to the last comma.

2GB vs 4GB, I wold say the 2GB is sufficient for your current HD work depending how big the price difference is.

Since I want to learn more of Resolve, I choose 4GB, at least I have more GPU RAM.

As monitored by GPU-Z, I see current use is around 1.7GB in Resolve (HD work)

OK, so my 69th birthday arrived as did my new 2Gb MSI R7 370 AMD card along with a brand spanking new 27" Philips monitor which I awarded myself as an early Christmas present.

Installation went OK and the card worked at first attempt. Which is more than can be said for VP13. It would not load again after I tweaked its settings to take account of the new card. I loaded it by using CTL SHIFT Click which meant I lost all my defaults settings (fine tuned over the years). Can I get these back, by the way? I looked for .ini files etc to no avail.

But that's not my main problem at the moment. Without having risked trying a GPU-enabled render, Vegas is now loading OK. I do not know how I fixed it but I did download new drivers, or got windows to and unistalled all the MSI and AMD stuff I found lying around.

At first I thought I would use my new 27" monitor as video preview screen and my existing 21" for editing. I now think the extra space would enable easier editing, using the 21" as monitor. (I wonder what you guys would do? Larger screen for preview or editing?)

When that 21" monitor is plugged into the onboard Intel video graphics port, WIndows 10 (64bit) identifies it correctly and allows me to use it at its native resolution of 1920x1080. But, of course, I want to use it with my new GPU card. But when I plug it into that via MSI-VGA adapter (same as for the Intel port), WIndows no longer recognises it and loads it as Generic monitor with max resolution of 1600x900 or something daft. So to get correct aspect, I have to drop that down to 1280x720 which is not good. I tried a little bit of software to force windows to accept the higher res but that just made things unstable.

Any ideas, please as to how I can force WIndows 10 to recognise my second monitor? It recognises the new 27" one via the HDMI port on the GPU card but not the 21" (also a Philips) via the MSI port. Thanks. (This has been driving me to distraction and I'm beginning to wish I'd stuck with my old card and setup except, of course, I love the 27" monitor!)

Download the latest driver for your device from MSI's website (or maybe AMD's website if the MSI one doesn't work). Don't just accept what Windows installs for it.

Note this thread, in case you run into that issue, and the fix if it happens to you (installing .NET 4.6.2).

You can't get your settings back after a CTRL SHIFT restart unless you have backups of your C: drive with them in.

I would probably edit on the 27" monitor and monitor on the 21" monitor.

VGA connection is not a good idea - as it was very limited, so far I know - better use DVI connector if it is available...

disable onboard intel graphics and use gpu card only. i have had various attempts at trying to set up systems using both intel onboard and discrete gpu - both nvidia and amd. i wanted this so i could use intel's quick sync, etc., but have found with both gigabyte and asus mb's that trying to use both can work but certainy isn't reliable.

Thanks guys. The monitor I propose using for monitoring (21) only has VGA I'm afraid. I have checked Framework and repaired it and all is OK and up to date. All drivers are up to date.

I have now tried going back to where I was with the 21" monitor plugged into the Intel video output and now VP is crashing very time I press the Video output on external screen button. Grrrrrr. Why do these things happend. I updated all drivers (Intel and monitor). Tried it with GPU of and on (in Monitor and render settings) and tried unchecking all other settings in video preview and still it crashes. I just want to get on with some editing. In case it helps, here is the error report. For this purpose, VP should not be using the GPU card but the onboard Intel graphics. I do appreciate all the help given on this forum!

Thanks. How do I disable this? Will Windows not find it when it reboots?

JohnAsh wrote on 10/22/2016, 7:33 AM

OK. I think I solved this myself, even though Windows refuses to change from an Non-PnP Generic monitor. I eventually found a setting to change to force the resolution higher (all be it at only 30Hz refresh rate). I'll have to write this quickly else I'll forget where the setting was and will never be able to find it again!

I right clicked desktop, dsiplay settings, selected the monitor, Advanced dusplay settings, Display adapter properties, Adapter, List All Modes and there I was able to select 1920x1080... 30Hz (Interlaced). With my monitor plugged back into the AMD card, Vegas now seems happy and I think I am too. Thanks again. But I don't think this is the ideal solution, is it?!

"it's really important to understand this: Vegas Pro has Timeline GPU acceleration, FX GPU acceleration, and Rendering GPU acceleration for very specific codecs. Timeline acceleration uses OpenCL so the most recent graphics cards are supported"

I bought a 750Ti only for better timeline performance, but the result is :(

http://kepfeltoltes.hu/161026/vee_www.kepfeltoltes.hu_.jpg

Why i cannot see 50fps fluid motion at good(half) setting with a so powerful opencl card, i7 cpu, ssd and 16GB ram? GPU Load is between 1 and 10%. What kind of help is that?.. Ok, i know i should buy an AMD card, but then i lost 3d vision and Cuda supported programs :(

I thinked opencl will help in a such easy timeline (few simple fx).

Compute load normally does not show up too much in GPU usage. If you want really to know if GPU is accelerating your project, just turn GPU off at Preview and run CPU only and see if FPS stay same. If performance of timeline drop then your GPU was accelerating it.

Other than that NVIDIA does nice Compute performance in some other OpenCL benchmarks/applications but it dont work as fast as AMD in Vegas OpenCL.

For Vegas the best option is AMD GPU. Yet GTX750 TI has low compute power, around 1.4Tflops.

Take a look how 750ti performed against r7 260 in compute benchmarks and Vegas:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/7764/the-nvidia-geforce-gtx-750-ti-and-gtx-750-review-maxwell/21

There is only suspicious if NVIDIA propositaly dont improve OpenCL driver or if their cards really has some problem with OpenCL, but since GTX560 not work properly with Vegas compositing it make me think it's a lack of optimization instead of hardware problem.

In newer generations apparently Kepler and after NVIDIA optimized better their OpenCL for video editing at least, Maxwell and Pascal improved a lot against Maxwell and Fermi.

GTX970 is 3.5Tflops against 780 3.9Tflops and yet GTX970 do better performance at OpenCL. There is a lot of inconsistency in NVIDIA Opencl video performance: http://images.anandtech.com/graphs/graph8568/67919.png

For Vegas users the way to go is AMD OpenCL while for Adobe its NVIDIA CUDA.

My Movie Studio 13 Preview test performance with 3 cards + iGPU in 4 projects:

GTX560 is faster than iGPU but apparently the lack of optimization make it broken for video compositing and even slower than iGPU for video FX acceleration. This test dont show much because there is no Maxwell or Pascal to see if it improved over older cards for Vegas.
